I have been playing guitar for about 6 months now. I was told to go with thinner strings at first so right now i have 11's on my guitar. I was wondering if the thicker strings have a better sound, or should i just stick with the 11's?

The thickness of a string does not effect the quality of the sound, but rather the pitch.
Think of it this way, the thicker (more massive) the string, the lower the fundamental frequency of the vibration and all its overtones. Thus, a lower frequency vibration emits a lower-pitch tone.
In other words, the thinner the string, the higher the pitch. The quality of the sound has to do with the quality of the string. Try a set of elixirs or D'Addarios.

You should change them every 6 months at least. If you play very often, then I suggest changing them more frequently, maybe every 3-4 months.
