Hmm. Very interesting. I really hope this doesn't mean that they rushed things.
We'll need Matt and Jake to confirm this.
Oh, and I chuckled at the first sentence.

maybe they already did though. #27, shotgun, cornbread, eh hee, and ioy are all pretty solid and there isn't a whole lot to do to them besides finalize them. thats like 40% of the album right there if they use them all. if dave wrote 27+ songs like he supposedly did, then they could have already done a lot of work on them. they might not need to focus on writing 100% new stuff in the studio. they could be going in there with songs 1/3 done and just need polishing.
nobody knows for sure whats been going on in the studio except the boys and cavallo. so saying that they are just starting to work on it could be as wrong as saying its almost done. its just seems like its too late to announce something like an album thats coming out in 2 months and that it SHOULD be after the tour before we hear anything about it.

Hmm. I don't anyone should see this as encouraging or discouraging (if it were true. I believe Jake personally).
I'm just totally confident that they aren't "rushing" anything. If the product is good then there's no reason to re-take and re-hash. In reality this album has been in the works since 2006, possibly since 2003 because Stand Up seemed to be a deviation from where the band was heading with new material. So they haven't rushed anything. Dave's been writing, the band's been writing and they've been working on this stuff for a while. Granted there's probably new songs that are getting work but they were probably ideas before they went to the studio.
So I see no reason to read into this (if it is indeed true).

lol true but i dont think they've pushed this hard to make a good recording in years. they've gotten a well known rock/pop producer and brought tim back. they have songs from 07 and 06 to work around along with a couple others (SUAD, Loving Wings). then theres the new stuff which dave has 30+ songs worth. they could record this in just a 2 weeks

They have the material but IMO, to make use of the potential that this album has from what we're hearing, the band should work on the material for at least a month, with breaks. I feel that if they record for a few days, take some time off, let the ideas stew for awhile, and revisit the music it can only help. I want this record to be good, but I also want to hear it relatively soon.

i'm trying to remember back to the days of UTTAD, Crash, and BTCS. does anyone know off hand how long the band was in the studio to record each of these albums. i can't recall it being that long. UTTAD and Crash I believe were very quick records, while BTCS was a little longer, maybe 2-3 months. can anyone pull this? jake, matt?
maybe the length of other studio sessions will calm everyone's fears about the new album.

I've asked this in like 300 threads, so can please someone answer.....
The band has has some recording sessions every once in a while, the band has "finished pre-production", the band has started recording in Seattle....
Enters the news of Rob Cavallo....has he helped the band in the writing process at all? Or is this CD something like, the band has come up with a list of songs they want on the CD, and they want a producer to help them put a solid cd together?
So basically, is Rob working on songs the band has finished, or was he around to help and guide them in a writing process?

They should definitely take their time. I hope this album comes out as rich and complex as BTCS, and that takes a lot of time with the amount of overdubs. A DMB-album recorded in a week means Everyday or Busted Stuff. BS means like almost no overdubs... Itīs dull. So plain. Honestly, Lilywhite Sessions had more overdubs, layers and complexity, and it wasnīt even finished... No i say the boys should take their time and get as much as possible out of each song without growing bored with the process. Taking breaks is a healthy strategy when youīre working on something big. If you stay on the same track for too long, your senses will go "blind", you will get bored and frustrated, no longer being able to tell crap from art.

I'm tired of people putting down Everyday. It's not the same great music as the Lillywhite Sessions, but it's still a pretty solid album.
UTTAD took about a month. Everything was already written, so all they did was record the songs - live style.
Crash took considerably longer, a few months, Sept-early Nov 1995.
BTCS was two sessions - one at the Plant in Sacramento in Nov 97 (where Rapunzel was basically laid out, and a few other songs were structured), and then it took about 3 months to finish.
Lillywhite sessions were a total of 5 months before they were scrapped.
ED was really a week, but they took 3 weeks to record the album.
Busted Stuff was a bit over a month - again everything was pretty much set.
Stand Up was about 3-4 months.
And this one, technically, had 2 months of sessions last year before it was scrapped. And in 2004 they recorded off and on for 3-4 months before they scrapped that stuff.
So, in general, a 3-4 month time-frame is a safe bet, with most people thinking it'll be a lot longer.

I don't think I could do that though, especially with the shows that I', attending. Luckily for me, Camden is the second stop on the tour, so I probably won't even visit Ants during the first stop.
This would eliminate any temptation of downloading the songs beforehand, and more importantly, eliminate any opinions of the songs from the millions of threads that are sure to show up after the first night of the tour.

Over 3 years puts it after May 10. And if it were going to be released any time in May I'd have to expect we would have a release date already.
I mean here's to "a tour to promote their new album" to mean "a tour to promote their recently released album", but lets be serious, we're not getting an album until after the tour wraps up.

I doubt Eh Hee since Dave already released it. That'd be a waste.
I don't understand why people think that Eh Hee has no chance because Dave "released" it already.
Dave's version of the song has everything the full band version does, and the band played it on a nightly basis last year. If the band wasn't supposed to play on it, why would Dave have made it with an entire band's worth of sound?

This article basically says (confirms) the same:

Hopefully, "pre-production" means the songs are finished and they just need to get the recording down the way they like. :thumbsup

i wouldnt call it rushing. dave started recording some tracks back in 06 while in pittsburgh with the band.
That was actually a Dave solo recording session to get "The Fly" tracked. Dave had been putting it off for a long time. Finally he had to get it done in the middle of the Summer Tour of '06 in order to make it ready for the release of Joshua.

I also just finished up a week with my family at Beaver Creek. Tomorrow I drive to Denver , then fly to C'ville in VA to do a little preproduction before heading out to Seattle to start our recording of our next record. So the times are good, and I hope yours are as well.

When we can expect the new album is not easy to say, but I just wish that they will take their time finishing it up - Depending on how finished the material is, when hitting the studio, two things can happen: If the material needs polishing, then it CAN take long, but if they’re pretty done in writing and arranging, then it can go pretty fast... Time will show ;-)

I think some of you are reading entirely too much into this.
I concur. All that seems to have happened here is a press agent for some wire services read the same blurb on the band's page as the rest of us and re-worded it for his or her piece. I highly doubt they got any kind of a scoop from anyone regarding where the project is in development and that the term "last stages of its completion" is pretty vague, on purpose.

even if the band finishes songs by the end of this month...i believe the main question should be if anyone here knows how long it takes to mass produce a music album on the same level as SU?
i'm guessing Jake would know this?

The only reason I am hoping for a release before or at the beginning of the tour is the same reason (i'm not sure who said it) as someone on the most recent Ants Podcast... He said he was afraid of them overplaying the new tracks that we would be bored with them before the album even comes out. I love when new DMB albums come out and just starting from track 1 and listening the whole way through and being surprised by the new songs!

I love watching setlists and seeing new song #3 and aticipating getting a recording of it...
It was much better than getting stand up and listening to it then seeing the shows.

I would pop 2 or 3 songs during the tour, but leave a handfull of surprises for the album release.

well then you're in luck. i'm calling Tuesday, August 5, 2008 as the day we get LP7.
the album comes out that day, TR3 opens that night, creating a sort of "album release" show, alpine gets a couple huge shows that weekend, then robert earl keen opens a few weeks later so barnes can guest on all his album tracks.

I'm guessing they'll spend most or March in the studio. Then take a break, during which Dave & Tim will do some shows. Maybe we'll hear a new song or two then. They'll probably head back into the studio one more time pre-tour.
I'm pretty sure they'll road test a lot of the new songs, and I don't view it as a bad thing. Then after the tour, go back and finish the record. But who cares if we hear the songs early or not? I don't care if it's new, I just care if it's good.
Hearing Shotgun on the album will be a lot better then say the first time I heard Sleep to Dream Her. So I'm sorry if them developing songs on the roads ruins the album for some people. But it's the way it needs to be done. I just need Shotgun and A Dream So Real to make the album.

I don't see that being true at all. No way they can get it ready by then.
They recorded Busted Stuff in January of 02. It was released the middle of that summer (July). They're just now starting to record. No way it will be ready by June.

Yeah June is way too early. I don't care if IOY, Loving Wings, Cornbread, 27, ADSR and SUAD were already recorded. I'm thinking more like Oct/Nov.

Someone on here mentioned the process from recording to mixing to marketing to graphic design to pressing.. and it seems like it typically takes 6 months at a minimum from the completion of recording to get through all the post production and becoming available.
