If they general feeling around the band is that they really want to get it right this time, I'm guessing we'll get a title that comes from a lyric in a song. Just my guess though.

Well I appreciate how 'cool' patterns on the wall sounds, but I actually have found someone shot before and seen those 'patterns', so I don't know if I would have the stomach for the album if that were the name, no matter how good it is.
I think it will either be a song lyric or #27 like Jules mentioned.

I voted song title because it seemed logical.
Then I read the posts and they seemed logical as well.
Patterns On the Wall or Self-titled seem to be the best picks. I agree with one of the posters that some of these titles are terribly idiotic (kinda like the 'Let's Unnessecarily Rename #27' thread; let's rename Two Step 'Flesh and Blood'... let's not).

I think its coolness outweighs its grossness, although I've never experienced suicide first hand (one word? hyphenated?).
I think it'd be better than a self-titled album because I associate self-titled albums with first and last.

Sure, if you don't know what it's referring to. When you know what it's talking about it paints a much more morbid picture (which, for some reason I haven't yet figured out, translates into cool; but if a close friend or relative of yours killed themselves and it brings back bad memmories, then I can see how it probably wouldn't be your favorite album title).
I can see where you're coming from, though.
Edit: ^Well actually I can't see as how (as how... is that even an expression?! I typed it, so it must have come from somewhere) you didn't elaborate, but I can think of reasons that someone might think the title sounds retarded.

Well fortunately I don't know anyone who's killed themselves either, but if it had that title no matter what the album cover looked like, every time I'd think of that cd I'd think of blood and gore splattered all over the place, whereas if I think of another album such as UTTAD, I see that nice picture of the swing ride during a sunset. I dunno, It's just really unappealing to me. After all, it's DMB, not death metal or emo.

I am so glad I am not the only person who sees the distastefulness in naming this album after soul shattering imagery. I HAVE been there and I can't imagine a group like DMB that lifts so many would want to name an album after the self-murder mess that's left behind.
Once you clean your daddy's head off the wall, you view what is 'cool' a little differently.

I apologize for creeping you out...I'm actually a sweet old lady, lol. But I have dealt with the suicides of four (yep, four) people in my family and I guess that's why I'm so vocal on this topic when usually I just fade into the black, but it creeps ME out when so many people think it's such a great album title.
ANYWAY, this isn't about me, it's about album titles. Sorry for the detour, back on track!
Here's to a GREAT album!!

PS - this isn't the creepiest thing on the boards. Men talking about Hannah Montana and girls of her age being 'fair game' because 'there's grass on the field' is by FAR the creepiest thing on these boards.

I like this one. Patterns on the wall just sounds corny to me, and the deeper meaning behind it is just a little too much. I like UTTAD and BTCS are almost poetic. They just need to take an overlooked lyric from one of the songs and be that. No song titles, no self titled(too lazy, sort of liek the dave matthews band, lol).....just a good quality lyric and ill be a happy camper.

I agree with you though I did not mean to reference the BTCS album as a whole. There is something about "Beneath the Midday Sun" that has that same beautiful poetic ring to it as "Before These Crowded Streets" or even "Under the Table and Dreaming". At least it does to me.
I mean when you hear an album title like those above (as opposed to simply naming it after a track) it makes you curious as to what the lyrical and musical content is of the entire album. I'd be hoping that the entire album is just as unique, creative and inspiring as the title. Which they can still do with this new album without imitating their past work.
I'm just referring to this in the "judging a book by its cover" context. A catchy title will make an individual more curious about what's inside, where a simple, no-thought title may make someone not even want to pick it up. I love the therapeutic qualities of music and lyrics. I also love how it allows the listener to think, dream, analyze and compare it with their life so they can determine how it's significant to them and their personal experiences. I think every little detail about music allows us to do this and a deep, inspiring and thought-provoking title only adds to the art that music is.

As for the statement I bolded in your quote above, I'm on the fence. I really believe the casual shopper don't give a rat's ass about an album title. If they hear a song they like, they might go buy the album... nowadays they're likely to just download the song they like and leave it at that... but that's a whole different discussion!

Meh, it's haze of confusion and that doesn't have a good ring.
NEW THEORY:
Everyday, Stand Up, Busted Stuff: All named directly from song titles
Crash (Crash Into Me is the official title), Before these Crowded Streets, Under the Table and Dreaming, Remember Two Things: All named for ideas/lyrics
So the lesson is: Do not name the album after a direct song title and win ants' hearts.
Come on, it's a clear formula.;)

Also maybe you could notice that you could call Before these Crowded Streets, Dave Matthews Magical Music Adventure and it wouldn't change the content of the album.
The album is gonna be what it's gonna be.

i actually read somewhere - don't remember where - that Stefan said "Remember Two Things" was a reference to a book/books that were called Everything You Know is Wrong, & You Are Being Lied To, and that THOSE are the two things to remember. I could be wrong though, or mis-remembering that, but I'm pretty sure.

Its hard to say without a list of tracks. The title should be somewhat reflective of the album's content. I really like "Beneath the Midday Sun", but with songs like Shotgun, SUAD, and hopefully Sugar Will it doesn't make much sense. "Patterns on the Wall" fits better with those songs. "Sweet Up and Down" could work too. However, its probable that it will be a line that we haven't heard yet... something from Shotgun or Sugar Will... or, dare I say, Machead! (SBC SOUNDCHECK PLEASE!)

Not to sound too rude, but "Patterns on the Wall" is terrible. Who wants to give imagery of blood splattered on a wall in the title of their album? Do people here understand the phrase when it's used in Shotgun, or do people just have zero marketing skills?

While the title minus the meaning sounds sweet, yeah, I agree with you. It's pretty morbid. I want a reflective yet idealistic title, something very much like "UTTAD"

If he didn't want to give the imagery...he wouldn't have put it in the song. How is it a bad marketing skill? It's a lot catchier than "Shotgun" or "Idea of You" - if you want to talk about controversial topics and whether or not they were bad marketing ideas
Nas - "N*gger"
Beatles - "Revolver"
Fuck look at the Stones, "Let It Bleed", "Goats Head Soup", "Sucking In The Seventies"
Are you saying that it has to be a responsible and polished album title for it to be succesfull? When your a band like the Dave Matthews Band that has an already established fan base that WILL go out and buy the CD (95% of them) regardless of what the album title is - there really is no other marketing plan other than what sounds good.

Like I said before - I am sorry to those that have had to encounter it, really - but being morbid and out there shouldn't take away from the line and how it would fit the song and also a good title for a darker album. People have a hard time realizing that death is just as much a part of life as living is - so it's just as easy to place a darker more morbid sounding lyric on a possible darker album than it is "Playing Under The Table and Dreaming".

^I'll admit I think the lyric is chilling and beautiful (in a morbid way) and it's definitely one of my favorite lines Dave's come up with in a long while. Obviously death is a part of life --- i agree with you. I'm not trying to ignore death or anything. But for the sake of sensitivity, I don't think the title of the album should reflect such a dark and grotesque concept, even if most mainstream listeners probably wouldn't even catch the meaning. Plus, suicide isn't exactly a "natural" death. It's tragic and traumatic.
I like the title and it has a fantastic ring to it, but I'd prefer something more lighthearted yet contemplative

I agree with the sensitivity factor, but if the album has the darker tone to it (as rumoured) it should have a line that portrays a darker image to it. But, that's why I dont get paid to make album titles - I just sit like a dork and write about it.

Yeah, I agree Patterns on the Wall is a great line in the song, but I feel like it isn't an appropriate album title. I don't agree with previous comparisons to Let it Bleed, Revolver and the Nas record.

Truth (taken as morbidity by most of the populace) is why I feel so drawn to DMB. Because the lyrics are about the real things that happen in life (and before and after life), and yes, some of those things are considered very morbid -but those are the things that have taught me the most in life and made me the person I am today. I am just opposed to using that lyric as an album title, that's all. Come on, we're talking about the girl that said she cleaned Dad's brains off the wall (actually, my aunt did most of it thank god) so I am a person who appreciates the bare honest truth of life. :cool
I must also say, I was talking to a friend of mine about this thread and she reminded me that 'patterns on the wall' would be comforting when put in the context of someone truly evil taking their own life.
So I guess it's a matter of perspective, as in most things.
Other than that, bring on the darkness, that don't scare me none ;) I just don't like it as the title of a complete work.

^ i've suggested that before, but with #40 teases throughout the entire album.
I like that idea too. Incubus split a song on their new album which I thought was weird at first, but it worked out pretty well. The first part is on the middle of the album and it has kind of a cheerful vibe to it... the last song on the album is kind of a saddened reprise of the same song. Its pretty cool.
I definitely like "Tables Turned Again" or just "Tables Turned".

with the designs coming out for the tour and the album page, with the paint splatters and what not...it's very shotgun inspired. so i think a line from shotgun is likely to be the title if not SHOTGUN itself. pretty patterns on the wall is a great one, but it could be any other great line in the song :thumbsup

I think the safest bets are Shotgun and/or the Idea Of You.
the word Shotgun just sticks out and has from the begining and certainly doesn't sound like something the Dave Matthews Band would title their album. Now the IOY is a play of words that can mean many things, kinda a question to the public suggesting their idea of the band isn't set in stone.

The more I see the artwork they've been pushing recently, the more I'm thinking "Patterns on the Wall"

The artwork we have been seeing definately suggests the song Shotgun, some of it even has bullet holes in it.

I remember in 05 when we all speculated on album titles. We get all these posts with these over-thought titles dripping with a forced sense of profundity.
Then the official announcement is....."Stand Up".....LOL.

I think they should go with a self-titled album, but if not, I would like to see a song lyric that is not "Patterns on the Wall" or any variation of that line.
