View Full Version : Good Band Name
born 1991

Hey guys. I've been working with some friends on a band the past few months now. Although we're not a cover band, we're hoping to sound somewhat like DMB once we get started. We're gonna have a singer/acoustic guitar (me), drummer, bass, electric guitar, and possibly a saxiphonist or keyboardist. We can't come up with a name though. I thought the Babboon Farmers would be funny since only a few people would get it, but I'm not sure if I like it. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

can i make a comment without sounding like a douchebag?
i love the dmb as much as the next guy (probably more), but NEVER EVER EVER start out in a band "trying" to sound like somone else.
it just spells disaster - trust me.
why not think about what's important to you, and try to develop a style that reflects what you're trying to say?
maybe the name will come out of that. though you shouldn't talk to me about band names. my band got dubbed something by a promoter and we could never change it from "The Project"

Ive been in a few bands before, and, opposed to the earlier post ^, if this is your first band, I would recommend trying to follow in the path of another band. My first band was all into trying to make our 'own' music and be really creative or whatnot. But most likely, you aren't going to get really big or anything, and you might as well use other peoples work to help your creativity. Some of the best stuff that I wrote in my first band was in an attempt to emulate bands that I liked. Plus it takes a whole load off the creative process. Or go ahead and be a cover band for a while, until you all get comfortable with what you guys like to play.
As for a name, the best idea is just to get anything and stick with it. Any band that I have been in, I have waisted waaaayyy too much time with figuring out a name. Just pick something that you can all agree doesn't sound dumb. If you haven't already thought of a great name that has some sort of deep meaning to it, you probably never will.

yea that is probably true. But I think it is great enough that people are still trying to make music in general. But the point that I was trying to make here is when you first start out I think it's very important to create a love for playing by learning from others, and then improve upon that. Grow in your own creativity after you have learned how other people have done it.

Ok, big reply:
If you have a unique last name that always works....
That's a good idea but Desiderio is kinda weird and I'd feel a little too-self centered. Our drummer's last name is Mahoney, which is kinda cool imo. Who would be so conceited to name a band after themselves though, honestly...:lol

This is my first band, so I agree that coming up with our own genre right off the bat would be a little tough. Most of us aren't that experienced with our instruments too, but I'd say I'm fairly good at guitar, and can cover a few DMB songs, like Crash, Grey Street, Watchtower, Warehouse, Nancies, Big Eyed Fish, SU&D, Bartender, Cmas Song, YMDT, and Halloween. And DMB isn't the only band I think we should use as inspiration, even if they are the main one. It's really weird, but we were also thinking a little Chili Peppers, Dispatch, maybe White Stripes, and a hint of Counting Crows and Travelin Wilburys.
We haven't spent much time on name ideas, that's partly why I made this thread. I don't wanna be tryin to come up with a name 5 minutes before we go on stage. Two ideas we liked though were "Oodaman" which has to do with something I apparently kept saying at a party... Another was "Saganaga," which is the name of a lake I saw when I was canoing in the boundary lakes of Minnesota.
Different strokes...
Though I think your opinion is kind of what's wrong with the music industry today...
That's a really good point. If we could ever "invent" our own genre, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
You should call your band Dumela.

That'd be cool, but if we turned out to be ok, I'm sure we'd regret that in a few years.

Tin Can Mikes

Saganaga makes me think of a metal band for some reason
Oodaman doesn't make me think of anything
Baboon Farmers sounds good to me
Tin Can Mikes is alrightish
Machead sounds like a pretty good name
Lightning bugs sounds like a 7th grade girl pop band
Tasty and th Big Blond Monster sounds like the name of a childrens book
Perwinkle reminds me of Periwinkle, but either way sounds pretty sissy. You should go with desaturated colors or larva of the Caddisfly.. but that sounds gross.
Brandywine Bridge seems like a name for six pence non the ritcher song.
I think you should either go with baboon farmers, oodaman, machead or...
The Revalators (like JTR)
or something from the poem the jabberwocky like
the borogroves
the frumious bandersnatch

:thumbsup Thanks, that's some really good feedback. Sometimes you don't realize how horrible a name is until someone tells you (I kinda knew Perwinkle, Lightning Bugs, and Brandywine Bridge sucked, but I just wanted to make sure.) I like the Revelators a lot. I like the Jabberwocky ones too but I think they'd make better song names than band names. Maybe I should make this into another +/- game...

you might as well, it will give us musician discussion threaders a fun activity. but make it like 3 points each or something... A lot of those do sound like song names. I really like Beamish Boy. It just sounds so interesting in itself. Bandersnatch is a good one too bc it has band in it

Hey sorry I keep bumping up my old threads, but with Roi gone and all, I thought a band name that made a reference to him would be cool. Is that a good/bad idea? Of course if you guys have any more suggestions at all it'd be much appreciated. (And the new guitar I have is electric and can make anything from a Jack White grunge sound to a clean Dave sound (the one he uses for 41 sometimes) if that helps you with a name at all.)

You need to come up with your own unique sound. Never try to 'copy' or 'sound like' another band. When I first picked up a guitar at age 13, I wanted to be just like Dave, but when I started writing my own (acoustic) songs i realized that I too had my own unique sound, and I stuck with it. You can still be an acoustic jam band, but you have to find your own sound and style.

Wow I am honored for your first post to be in my thread. Welcome to Ants.:)
Looking back, I don't really want to sound like DMB (not closely at least). The only way I would want to be like them is with good lyrics and powerful vocals (I'm fortunate enough to have that really strong, versatile kind of voice). Otherwise, I'm just gonna wing it. I have a heavy blues kind of guitar style, and when mixed with all the various instruments we have, I have no clue what it's gonna sound like.
So here's an update on what players we have:
Electric guitar/vocals (me)
Drums
12 string guitar
Saxophone
Keyboard (probable)
Bass (still searching)

Where is your violin player?
Funny story about that. Violinists are pretty rare in the first place, but there was one who overheard me talking about my band and told me he'd join it. But I looked at it this way: he's not only a completely naive nerd (he's asked me what "hooking up" was), but he's a jerk. My hairs kind of long, but it's just a small fro, and he said to me the other night, "Frank, why isn't your hair cut yet? Mr. A. (the guy who's in charge of Student Council at my school) is gonna kick you off if you don't get it cut. I mean, it's none of my business, but it seems kind of dumb to leave it like that. You could at least comb it." It's just that kind of stuff constantly. So I'd rather be lacking in one instrument than have someone I don't like, strongly dislike for that matter, in my band. You can understand that, right?

A funny story I have is from when I was talking to my friend who's going to play the 12 string guitar. He wanted me to pick a cover for us to do, and I said Grey Street. He listens to hard rock pretty exclusively so was a little skeptical about us doing a DMB song. When I let him listen to it and gave him a tab, he said it'd be good, but he was afraid of it becoming repetitive. I said, "Of course not, it's Simple, Powerful, and Fun." Then it dawned on me that SPF might be a good name.
