since i know have a well paying job i want a portable studio mainly to start recording not only for myself, but other people. as far as mics go i was looking into getting 1 instrument mic (i know of the shure, akg perception 200, and i've heard rumblings of the mxl pack on MF), 1 vocal mic (probably a shure), and a digital workstation. for that i was thinking of the yamaha AW1600 (http://yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D48575%252526CTID%25253D228500%25252 6ATRID%25253D20%252526DETYP%25253DATTRIBUTE,00.htm l)

anyone want to throw me some suggestions?

Really bad ass comfortable chairs and beer? Sorry, I know that's not what you're looking for. Haha...

I really do have to recommend the Shure mics. Personally, I am not to capable in the recording realm other than playing, but I have been at a few friends places who are real serious about and all I say is Shure mics. From experience using them, they tend to sound excellent, so that's my very un-educated opinion.

Couldn't you more easily get a band to come to you?

yes, and no, i move a lot (school, internships). plus i don't have much space nor do i have a desktop computer so anything rack based isn't really an option

they have portable racks.

it wouldnt be a bad idea to get one, i mean you can put your preamps and such on it. they also can come with a laptop top bit were you laptop goes. then you can put all your monitoring equiptment, amps and preamps under it plus get a draw for your mics.

all that stuff locks up and stays safe.

i dont have that kind of money right now though. im just looking for something entry level yet decent quality. if i turn this side project into a 2nd job, then we'll see

How much are looking to spend? You can't go wrong with the Korg D3200. I have it and it's awesome. 12 analogue tracks simultaneous recording and 32 tracks playback. It cost about £800 so I guess that'll be about $800 in the US.

when all is said and done i'd like to keep it under $2,000, 800 pounds is like 1400 US :lol fyi

honestly the best you can do is get a refurbished mac book pro, a shure sm57 and an apogee duet interface. Garageband (which comes with the mac) is pretty sweet to use and the apogee interface is the best on the market and will not get outdated.

The ease of use and variety of sounds you can achieve with this system is awesome. workstations are alright but mixing on them isn't too fun. computers make everything so much easier.

yeah i know, macs and garageband are garbage though. i can mix with with software i should have mentioned. i've used pro tools but currently use audition. that interface doesn't have nearly enough inputs for me either

No, $900 http://www.creativetools.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=563

It's awesome too in that you can mix with faders instead of clicking all the channels separately on a computer.

1st it comes to how much you wanna spend and how much you can spend.
im basiclly doing the same thing, but do to money i m getting it piece by piece
this what i have at the moment
cakewalk sonar 7 producers edtion on home pc
8 track digital recorder
8 channel mixer
1 condenser mic
1 dynamic mic
1 instrument mic
with all chords, stands, etc that is needed
all i really need now is another condenser mic
also though, down the road i plan on getting more/better mics
maybe upgrade to a better portable digital recorder, and getting
a laptop set up to record music

what i currently have though does just fine and will be better with a 2nd condenser mic

I currently have the boss-br 900 only down side to it is it only records up to 2 tracks at once which is the main reason i have the behringer xenyx 1202 fx.
the 900 is easy to use and is awesome for the price. would rather have the 1600 but do to price i had to get the 900. would have gotten the 1200 but the only difference is it has an internal hard drive. to me it wasnt worth getting i felt since it still only records 2 tracks

the only limitation i have currently is if i had seperate rooms i couldnt record everyone at same time. can only record one person at a time or if i had seperate rooms can only do up to 2 at a time.
