of course, just like its ok to plug a mic into an electric amp. it just sounds terrible.
my suggestion, if you play only accoustic get a decent acoustic amp or a PA system for it. if you play both, if you have the money do the right thing and buy a cab of speakers and get seperate heads for each.
of course, you can probably find a decent electric amp that plays acoustics well enough. but you will have to look, i know i dont own one.

Didn't Dave used to plug the Chet into a Fender Hot Rod? That is an electric amp. Though the Chet is truly an electric guitar, it has acoustic qualities when amplified.
I do agree that you may suffer some tone loss by plugging an acoustic/electric into an electric amp, but it will work. But acoustic amps are designed specifically for acoustic instruments. That being said, my Les Paul sounded awesome through my old Crate acoustic amp.

It won't damage anything. The problem you'd have plugging in an acoustic into an electric amp is feedback. if you must then start with the volume and gain at 0 and slooowly work your way up. it will still most likely sound like ass.
If I were you I'd save up for an acoustic amp like a SWR california or strawberry blonde. or even a PA.
The Chet isn't really an acoustic guitar as much as it is an electric. It was created so that players could play acoustic LOUD and manipulate the signal with effects and such without having to worry about feedback.
good luck man!

i'm not playing some place large, and my fender hot rod is a pretty nice amp. i'll probably just plug it into that. i just wanted to make sure i wasn't going to damage anything.

I have a non electric acoustic. Is the best way to amplify it through a regular microphone?

depends on how much you want to spend. A vocal mic would work fine. They do sell pickups for non electric acoustics as well. They also sell mics made for micing acoustics, you could also use a condensor mic as well.

Just plug direct into the PA.
I got myself one of those Fishman Acoustic Imaging Blender pedals that Tim Reynolds used on the Radio City record. My acoustic tone live has just been unbelievable ever since. That thing will crush any amp that you use to colour your tone.

Gonna guess those are rather expensive, do you have a link or something?

Yeah, they're about 400 bucks for the unit, and then it's like 250 or something for the smaller versions of the pedals.

if you're not gonna be moving around alot just buy a shure sm57 and a mic stand. the microphone is about $100 (you can get one cheaper used) and is incredible. It picks up whatever you point it at, and doesnt pick up much outside noise if any.
there are also mic systems that attach to the guitar.

Yeah, I know! When I was watching Radio City I kept trying to peek inside the soundhole of Tim's guitar to try and find a mic, but then he did that trick to knock and distort the piezo in Betrayal, and I figured something else was up.

my martin sounds great, but it gets just like that D35 when you plug it in.
