View Full Version : The case for Blue Water

There is no doubt that this new album is viewed by many, including the band members themselves, as a chance to reawaken the ideas and fomulas that have yielded the band's best work. This formula has been a wide range of elements such as personnel (Tim Reynolds) and diverse song selection - mixing some old, with some newer road tested material, with some brand new fresh studio-born tracks.
So here it is, Blue Water Baboon Farm, in all its faded glory - reawakened in the hearts and minds of the band by this very community. Stefan, still to this day, understands the power of the song via his blogs and myspace. So much so that in the walls of that old, defunct building near "the center of the universe" - the song was given new life. So much so that Dave himself has traveled to employ the services of an old friend to keep the song true to its vintage form. Along with other dynamic tunes that will share album space with Blue Water, such as Loving Wings and Shotgun, a very vivid motif has been painted for us of what the new album will be like.

No way. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd love to see that beautiful title of "Blue Water" on the back of the new album, but I highly doubt this would ever happen.

Just curious, but whats makes you belive this? The rumour that Dave contacted and a fellow guitart playing friend to contribute to an old song?
It just seemed, from your op that you had additional "Seattle knowledge" on the subject. Or is this just a shot in the dark, hope on a whim guess?

its not a whim. i was simply trying to connect the dots with, what i think, is extensive evidence for this to become a reality.

Seems like a LOT of leaps of faith. That being said, we'd all of course be beyond thrilled if it were worked on during these sessions.

well, first thank you...and as far as my intend. i have a good friend on here and we talk for hours on end about dmb on the phone, email, etc. We got to discussing if Blue Water was realistic based on the position of the band, knowledge of the songwith the members, current wind direction...hahaha...
i've really come to think its not out of the question. Heathcliff? Thats out of the question. Blue Water? Well...
We know that this song is still on their minds, Fonz knows it. And i think the timing is right with the bands career to dive back into their past a bit. I think this album will be a mix of old, very old and new.
Other than that this thread was just to consider the possibility a bit more deeper than the yes/no/youre a shithead...no youre shithead stuff

Like the guy above, I completely agree with you making this thread.
But, is it your reasoning/opinion supporting this, or have you heard about it from someone who might have a connection to the studio album. I didn't know if "this guy that works for Cavallo gave me the feeling" was sarcastic ...I assumed it might have been, but am not sure.

I follow the logic of this. The fact that its on Fonzi's mind is the only true chance at all. BTW, I've been obsessed w/Heathcliff recently. I wake up every morning with it in my head. (Not that thats a bad thing).

The band has been known to go back and record old material way past when its been written (see Get In Line, recorded for Crash, BTCS, and the Lillywhite sessions i believe). Given the circumstances that it was #1 on Stefans poll and still not picked to be played and the fact that they seem to be reaching a bit back to try old stunes like Loving Wings in the studio, if there was an album BWBF was recorded for, this ones as close as its gonna get. Theres always the possibility that it could get recorded or toyed with in the studio only to never see the light of day too.
That being said, its a huge stretch... the only things we can cling to in hope are...
1. Stefans reaction to his poll results and interest in the song.
2. Daves teases and D&T performances of the song in the last 5 years
3. The bands past history of recording old songs for potential inclusion on forthcoming albums (Get In Line)

I adore BW, but let's wait until we know for CERTAIN that a) this band as a studio force is back and b) Cavallo is adequate to the task.

i think it's better left in the archives, i'm afraid of what they might do to it, that it wouldn't be as good as it was. and some things are better left in the past, even if they were great and beautiful. i would much rather see one or two of the '04 songs, or DIKG, than see a sub-par BW come out.

Break Free surrounded by those is the single dirty sex song, it kind of completes the sex, life , death, circle.

I agree, but it needs some serious work.
I hate the song as is, but I always thought it could be really good with some solid and varied lyrics and some additional mucial sections.

I can't agree with you more on this, Blue Water is a daily staple for me, usually the remastered off AM 5 Vol. 1, because of the way Boyd tears it up. I can't see this song translating as well on a studio album, especially since its been years since last played.

I disagree. I think anything's a possibility at this point. We don't know what the band's philosophy is going into this album. And it's not a song like HHW that Dave might not even remember playing, it's made an appearance in recent years. If they capture a really fantastic cut of it, they may stick it on as a bonus track or something. It's too cool of a song to never get the studio treatment.

What if BW got used for an intro to the cd, or even the first song and faded out after dave finishes the last lines. After the very last song we get a reprisal similar to how the Last Stop is done on BTCS. I think that would be a great way to incorporate this song (if it is used on this next cd).

If Blue Water was on it, Loving Wings to open the album. That way your opening the album with love. Then working the songs in an order all the way to Blue Water closing which acts in the same vein as Spoon did for BTCS, ending the album with the darker songs.

Blue Water would make an amazing album closer.
It's such a depressing song though... :(
I mean, it's beautiful, but it seems like it'd be so heavy and depressing that it would leave people (who aren't familiar with the song) completely confused and, to be frank, confused as hell at the end of the disc. BTCS ended with a few darker songs, but then the Last Stop Reprise ended the album with a glimpse of hope and soothing bliss

I think I have heard Blue Water a few times and I like it. I think it would be good on an album, but I don't think that it will be on the album, no real reason other than it has been a while. In a way I don't want to know if it will be on the album. I want the track list to be a surprise when I first listen to it. Although somehow I think that might be difficult.
