Just saw this on the warehouse site...watch and discuss!
Check out the first 2008 glimpse of Dave Matthews Band inside the studio! Dave Matthews Band is currently working in the studio with producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Alanis Morissette). Guitarist and longtime friend Tim Reynolds has joined the band in the studio for the first time since 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets. The video, featuring a message from Dave, is being featured exclusively on iLike. To watch the video, iLike may be accessed in three ways: through Facebook, through iLike, and through the iTunes iLike sidebar

GOOD GOD...the bit of opening music was pure orgasmic ape-shit Roi. I think I just shat myself. Does certainly have a Sugar Will ring to it...
I could be gravely mistaken, but the song after the short intro that's running in the background.... sounds like it could easily bust into the epic SBC soundcheck chorus

The only difference between the regular one and the Warehouse one is Cavallo's head has been photoshopped out, in favor of an over sized Lillywhite one.

Do you really believe that Dave's picks for SU would be substantially better than what we got on the album? I doubt it.... and it didn't stop him from praising and getting excited about the rest of it.
Again, I've got a lot of hope for this album... a lot. But I'm still holding out on praising the band until I hear something definitive.... not just tiny little clips that don't amount to a song yet.

I can't get over how cool it sounds. It's my favorite DMB song :)
I just rewatched the Stand Up videos. I really think Batson just did not fit the band and all, and I can't really fault him for how he worked but when Dave says they haven't worked hard on the songs, they are just pumping them out, I think it was just a style they tried and it just didn't fit them. I'm sure they look back know and see how it could have been different but I wouldn't say they lost themselves on Stand Up, I just think Batson was wrong.
I think we hit the jackpot now.

Not to overdo it on the BTCS/current session comparisons, but the energy evident in this new video is very much akin to the energy you see in this BTCS promo, although perhaps much more loose and in a much earlier stage:

if they could now only just treat stand up like they did Everyday this past tour, that'd be fantastic... ya know, Bayou or YMDT spread out sparatically and not every night and THAT's IT like with Everyday being kinda spread with hardly anything else... that's if the new album lives to what we're hyping it up to be already, which I think is VERY POSSIBLE.

I don't know. I'm just not sold on the fact that it's not 100% Shotgun yet. Yes, the clip does sound different from what we know as Shotgun, but after listening to it several times and listening to Shotgun a few times, the music in the clip feels like it's in the same breath as Shotgun. The way Roi refers to the song saying "it needs a pace, but I like it, I like that better than the way we've been practicing/playing it" dave talking about the different sections, stefan speaking about what he's playing as an intro leading into something built around chords, but starting out with a lot a space to build up with. This is all just speculation though. I think it could possibly be another song completely. I would be disappointed if it were. I think the band does need to re-work Shotgun. I love the song, it's good music, but I never felt like it was complete or set in stone. I just hope that if they are talking about a song needing more sections, comparing it to two step...God I hope they are talking about Shotgun! Again, not bashing the song at all...just hoping the band feels it needs a little more tweaking too.
kingchrisII
03-29-2008, 09:48 AM
im starting to think this is all shotgun now too. the beginning 6 seconds sounds like a jam that could be used perfectly with shotgun, the following beats sounds like an intro, followed by a between verse, all topped up with the beat we know from shotgun.... maybe its not all shotgun but everything played sounds like it could fit together, whether or not it does, we will see. (if it is, shotgun soudns way better than it ever has)

It finally hit me what the song sounds like: Minarets & While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Now, I'm obviously not comparing it to either (I'm not that hyperbole-prone), but the vocal arrangement just makes me think of WMGJW.

I strongly doubt the music in the video is a reworking of shotgun... just my opinion though. If they are indeed putting that much work into a song that has already evolved for 2 summers, then hell yes, we're in for a classic album I think. With that being said, I think Shotgun assumed a more or less polished form in 07. I doubt we see much change.

I think this is all good ideas. If you listen...this is all in the same key. And I also get a stone vibe from this...very hyped from this short but sweet little clip.

Heres another observation about the Sugar Will "ish" Shotty jam at the beginning.
Look back to the Shoreline Amphitheatre show in 07. Dave did a "Sugar Will tease" before A Dream So Real. The key of the Sugar tease IS indeed the same key as this little jam we here in the new clip, though it is also the same key as A Dream So Real (maybe to help Dave sing in the right key because he has to sing early in the song)
Maybe Dave was just teasing Sugar Will in a higher key to stun fans and to help him start the song.
Maybe he was teasing this "new Shotgun jam" ?
or Maybe he was just teasing this new unheard jam.
Of course, the tease sounded like Sugar. But it does sound like the short audio clip in the video.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
This new album will be interested. I'm excited

That jam in the very beginning sounds like the end of Sugar Will for sure.
The song there working on sonds unbelievably awesome, and The lyrics sound like the warehouse intro from Piedmont. Listen: You can hear "I am the several times and I made out the word "ground" Maybe I'm looking to far into it but give it a listen several times. All of the music in that video that is not Shotgun at the end is the same song, I'm nearly positive. It does fit together. Meaning, I'd venture to say there's no Sugar Will in there. There's a good chance that rhythm was cannibalized from Sugar Will.
Just my guess.

I just made this post on TDC, and I don't feel like rewriting it for this board, so I'm just going to copy it. But take it in that context.
I'm just kind of thinking out loud here, but...
That riff at the beginning of the video that Dave plays does somewhat resemble Sugar Will, though the rest of the band isn't playing Sugar Will. And Dave did tease that riff at the end of the tour. Which makes me wonder: was that a Sugar Will tease in California? Or was it a tease of this new song, that cannibalized Sugar Will's riff? I mean, they started writing right off of the tour, or so it seems. So having ideas of new songs at the last venue of a tour isn't ridiculous, and if this song was already in the planning stages, maybe Dave strummed this song's riff (Sugar Will's old riff) during a moment between songs.
I know they aren't exactly the same, but just something I was thinking of earlier.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but...
"Though it ain't
Poison
Sugar will
Kill you
Too much of a good thing
Maybe not so sweet."
Those aren't the best he's ever written, but, if he cringes at those, how on God's green Earth did he not cringe at:
"I would dig a hole all the way to China
Unless of course I was there
Then I'd dig my way home."
I hope he cringes at some lyrics (Sugar Will's or any song's) during these sessions so we don't get another verse like that.

Did anyone catch that when there all taking right before Dave says something about it being like Two Step he hums or sings out loud the notes in the very first intro piece to the video. It is clearly the same song. So there are two pieces, Shotgun, and the song they play 5 seconds off and talk about for the rest of the video.

I'm listening to shotgun right now (6/10/06) and they could definitely use incorporate a minor section, like what they were riffing on in the clip. And as a side-note, I do see what the hype is all about with the 6/10 version. Haven't listened to it in a while, and am definitely in love w/it.

no, but the way they are talking about it (layers, intros), makes it basically impossible that it is, since IOY has no depth. Also, if you listened to the rearranged audio clip, you can hear that all the parts of that video are apart of 1 song.

Yes. Absolutely. Dave brought in Trey for Sugar Will, Dave wanted Joyride, Dave wanted a lot of things that didn't happen. But he backed off because they majority of the band didn't want them.
What did you expect him to say? "Well, we didn't make this thing the way I wanted and I hate it. But here it is."
Yeah, but Trey being a guest doesn't mean the song would have turned out well. Batson still produced it... just see Hello Again on that album .... its a fing travesty how it waqs produced given how great that song was live.

Have been watching and rewatching this clip for a few days now. To me, it feels, looks and sounds like exactly what we have all been clammering for. Almost too perfect. This clip shows us what we want to see. Dave's comparison feels cut and pasted from what we've been asking for. It all felt a little bit staged to me.
What that means, I don't know. Maybe they are making an album by our numbers, which believe it or not wouldn't be such a healthy thing. To do something well, they need to be inspired by the notion of it rather than the crowd. Having said that, what we've heard does seem to sound very cool, and even if only one song on the album sounds like that, that's still potentially one hell of a good song. I get the feeling that what we're going to hear will be pretty eclectic, being the product of more years and with more different musical ideas behind it than any other DMB album thus far. This won't be a direct thematic sequel to "Before These Crowded Streets" like everyone says they want, because there are going to be bits of Every Day and Busted Stuff and Stand Up in it too. Add to that the amount of people involved in this, Butch, Rashawn, Tim, Rob, probably Mark Batson somewhere down the line and you have what would seem to be a melting pot of different ideas. Most DMB albums have a blanket sound to them that you can define fairly easily. I expect this one to be all over the shop. It's going to be interesting.

I don't.... Joyride is now an official b-side so its likely done and probably won't be reconsidered on this or any future album. Hello Again was the only song they seemed to feel was good enough to really keep, and it was a pale imitation of its live version. This talk of Sugar Will being considered is a total guess. I think its more likely to be majorly reworked as opposed to resurrected.

Agreed. Cavallo's crudentials put him along the same lines as Lillywhite. This could work...this could work.
BTW, my bet is that the opening jam is Sugar Will. Same key, same guitar riff, and Roi is playing on an alto sax, which he seldom plays. In addition, I've heard Roi play that same fall down the scale lick in a version of Sugar Will back in 04. Keep in mind that none of this is conclusive, and the band may have reworked the song. This is just my best possible guess given the 3 seconds of the song that I've heard.

He was not listed as a co-writer on Shotgun on the 2007 Tour Sampler Disk. Thought that was interesting. I'm pretty sure it emerged from the sessions he was in on, but it must have evolved enough that they dropped him from the credit of it.

after watching it many times I've come to these conclusions:
1) the opening clip = too inconclusive for me to guess what song, although I don't hear Sugar Will in there.
2) I think the part where Roi is talking about it being faster, he is talking about Shotgun. It sounds like it's playing in the background at that point, and that would make sense.
3) ummm...FUCKING SWEET to see the whole band (seemingly) involved in the writing process and Cavallo doing what a producer is supposed to do.
4) I'm damn excited for this album, and seeing as how I just got my Alpine tix confirmations, I'm doing pretty good right about now Re: the DMB-universe.

I didn't think so either, but when I listened to the version from teh Stand Up bonus disc, if you listen to dave's guitar right before the big Leroi jam, it sounds very similar, as do the drums.

3) ummm...FUCKING SWEET to see the whole band (seemingly) involved in the writing process and Cavallo doing what a producer is supposed to do.
Wasn't that the problem with Stand Up, though? Too many people involved in the writing process as opposed to Dave hammering out tunes and the band playing them?

I think it's pretty hard to glean too much insight into the creative proccess of the band from a twenty second clip of Roi offering an opinion and Fonz and Dave working on some chords.
I mean yeah it's something, but it's a bit silly to take it as indicative of the ENTIRE studio process.

the song in the beginning is not sugar will. the guitar part sounds a little like it if it were sped up but the vocals and violin don't fit that well. the middle section is an intro to idea of you and the end is live shotgun

Exactly, that simply means it could possibly be reworked, no one said anything about it having to stay the same song.

The problem was Dave apparently tried to write lyrics in a group setting, on the fly--which never really works. Writing of any kind is an intensely personal process of laying one's thoughts down into words. I can hardly compose an email if someone's looking over my shoulder let alone write poetry.
I've always liked R.E.M.'s approach. They have a very definite system where they'd come up with the musical parts, and then Stipe would go off and return with lyrics. Or, Stipe would have some lyrics he'd come up with, which he'd then try to fit with the music. Granted this isn't a perfect analogy--Dave is a guitarist. But still.
The issue, I suspect, with Stand Up was that Dave was literally sitting at the mic trying to pull lyrics out of the air... and while he surely has a gift for improv on stage, it wasn't working in that studio.
I think, however, that Cavallo is not going to settle for limp lyrics. He's now got too much of a reputation to uphold, so this album has to be stellar, quality work. I don't think he'll be as tight-fisted as Lillywhite, but I suspect he'll be fairly demanding of our boys' talents. He knows they are world-class musicians. And hopefully, he's going to make them prove that again.
Which I think we can all agree is a good thing.

I completely agree with you on that, DMB needs to have a redemption album this time around and Cavallo is no push over like Baston was. Cavallo is somewhat of a big hitter in the producing industry and he has to uphold a reputation too.

Though, I'd love to know how this whole process works. Did the band meet Cavallo in the studio with a set down list of songs to work? Did Cavallo ask to hear everything they'd done since the last album? Does Cavallo actually get on Dave for crap lyrics and tell him he needs to lay something better down? How many different ways do they play the same song until they hit a version they like and really start to work it out?

Exactly. I've been wondering that myself--who approached who?
As to the person calling Batson a pushover... I don't think it was that. The band was trying a new angle--recording spontaneously, at a relaxed pace, not pressuring themselves, and they hired Batson to let them do exactly that. However, that approach doesn't work so well for DMB; their signature is the really complex stuff, and the musical virtuosity of each of the players playing at their peak level. On stage, there's the roar of the crowd to command the performance. In the studio, that requires a general to marshall the troops, so-to-speak.
But that's not Batson's fault. He ran the sessions the way the band wanted to. (Yeah, okay, that's speculation... but from the videos and finished product, this is the conclusion I come to).

I don't blame Batson for the subpar album.... but he didn't just come in and push record. He helped them write, and brought a sampling and hip hop mentality to the record. They wanted him to guide them and put his stamp on their music. It just wasn't a good fit. The production on the album is rich.. lots of texture and layering. Just listen to Stand Up (for it). There's a lot going on and it's pretty cool when you listen.
It's just that the production was wrong for DMB, and the band did make that choice. I was more frustrated when they said they were going back in the studio with him shortly after the Stand Up summer tour. I'm glad it didn't work out, but certainly I wish Batson well.

This is a perfect way of putting it. Like either Matt or Jake, don't remember who, said in one of the podcasts, he helped them make the record that they wanted. I think too many people here want to put the blame on somebody.

It's not blame and I'm sure he did his job. The problem is that the aesthetic he brought to the table just didn't work. And who didn't it work for? Us (not me I love Stand Up) but maybe it worked for the band. It was different. No blame. Just different angles contributing to the overall

They wouldn't go in with absolutely nothing. They have all of their road-tested songs.
But I agree, they aren't the type of band to get things in done in a short period of time. They need long periods of time to get anything good out of it.
