View Full Version : Will You Listen To The New Road Tested Songs Before The Album Is Released?

My plan for this summer is to avoid listening to any new songs, and to wait until after my 2nd show to start checking the setlists - to enhance the element of surprise at my shows. I know other people really don't want to hear these new songs before the album, and I understand why. I just wanted to see how many plan on doing this.

My show is early on, so I wont listen to anything or check any setlists til after DTE.

Yeah, I can definitely handle avoiding setlists until DTE...it's just that I have that one month wait for Raleigh, and I don't know if I can do it. I won't listen to the new songs, but I'll look at setlists after Raleigh.

I'm going to try and not look at anything until after my shows.

I'll be checking out the set lists, just to see how many new songs they are playing, but Im not going to D/L and tapes to see. Even if I hear the same new song at both shows it won't be enough to spoil the CD when I get it.

^^ have you executed that before, and does it really make things better?

I really want this album to be a surprise to me. I want to buy it, go home, sit down with it, and listen to it without saying "oh, yeah, sounds like how it sounded this summer..."

You guys will be on the forum.

You will see, OMG DAVE PLAYED TEH BUSTED STUFF

And you will download it to see how it sounds in 2008.

You will see, "New Song 1 - Amazing"

And you will downliad it to see how it sounds.

I probably will, too.

RobRoy286
04-15-2008, 05:14 PM
^:lol You're probably right, but I'm going to try my hardest to resist the temptation.

I actually meant to choose the 3rd option. I'll listen to all, hopefully not new songs

I wont be able to stay away from setlists and tapes, its the fun part of there being a tour.

RobRoy286
04-15-2008, 05:16 PM
Yeah, I can't avoid Ants for a whole month. Sad? Yes. But hey, a fun part of the summer is the DMB tour.

I can make it the 10 days until DTE though.

This will be the first time I have been on this board, and really paid attention to set lists when a new album is coming out. Im gonna try really hard to keep the new CD as much of a suprise as possible, I don't see the joy of getting a brand new CD only to already know what is on it before I get it. With that said, I can avoid D/L'in anything, it will be hard to avoid threads on this site has information on the new songs. :D I will try to avoid temptation!

As cool as it would be to have that "release date" experience. In my eyes, DMB is a live band and that's what I care about. I'll be all ears this summer.

Whats DTE?

And with all the material they have from the past couple years even if they play it, doesnt mean its going to be on the album, we might only hear 1 or 2 more new songs this summer. We dont know that the ad wasnt referring to Cornbread, #27, Shotgun or any of the ones we have already heard.

hard to not listen if you go to shows. I'm not sure what I'll do. If I knew a release date and it was Oct. or something I might be able to hold off for the most part until then, outside of my show, but if its not out until early next year I can't wait that long.

RobRoy286

Whats DTE?Small little amphitheatre outside Detroit. I think it's the smallest venue they play at regularly (around 15,000), but I think Berkley has 9,000.

I'll be going to Camden, which is the second stop, and I will probably still check the setlists from the first two nights. A. I wanna see what Timmy's doing if he's even there, and B. if there are new songs, I'll probably download them and listen to them on the way to Camden. :lol

I'd like to say I won't look at the setlists or listen to new songs, but I'll more than likely get curious as hell and have to listen to everything. That's why my friends call me Whiskers.

I don't want the same thing that happened to me in '04 to happen this year. I missed out on enjoying some great songs because I didn't know what they were. I look back and wish I had known about the forums. I could have enjoyed and appreciated songs like crazy-easy, sugarwill, etc more.

I kind of get the whole brand new cd concept, but all of the big 4 had a lot of songs we'd heard in concert before their releases. I'll listen to the new songs because it didn't affect my enjoyment of their first albums!

Yes, I don't buy in to the whole having to be surprised to enjoy the show more.

I feel that if I knew the songs in advance, I would appreciate them more. It's hard to absorb the music on the spot when at the show than if you had heard them before and would be able to notice what's changed/is different.

If I knew the release date for the album, and it was soon, I wouldn't look at setlists or download tapes. But it seems like the album release is getting pushed back to early '09, so I will definitely be downloading and watching setlists. That way, at my shows, I can sing along, and know the song.
I seriously can't go the ENTIRE summer until Gorge not watching setlists or downloading tapes.
I don't think that's possible. ;)

I'll listen to them, but with the way things have gone, I don't think they will debut much if anything. I think we'll get a whole bunch of road testing of songs we already know.

I wil check the setlists and listen to all the songs, but I'll try to avoid checking the tracklist of new studio album. Just buy it, put it to the player and listen, having (I hope) a lot of surprices :)

when i go to shows, im plugging my ears for all songs. even old ones. listening to DMB could really ruin a DMB album for me. i might not even listen to the album. i hope the cover art is awesome.

As it is I download the majority of shows from each tour, so yes I absolutely will be listening to all of the new material played. How can anybody on here not listen to it? It seems like everybodys wanting a taste of the new sessions.

As cool as it would be to rip open the finished CD and hear 90% new material, I doubt I'll be able to resist listening to the tapes

I'll def. give the new songs a listen. It's always nice to see how a song grows and develops through a tour (i.e. 04 songs, Cornbread, Shotgun, etc).

It's sad, though, when the good songs (Crazy Easy, Sugar Will) are cut from the album. :(

Camden's the second stop of the tour, so I'm gonna stay clear of Ants until after the show where I'll be writing my annual reviews of the shows :)

I'm not sure if anybody else does that, but I find it to be one my more exciting posts to write.

Not sure what I'll do after Camden. I've got Nissan later that month, so maybe i'll just check the set lists and stay away from the tapes.

I would like to be surprised by the new album, but I think the sole fact that tour announcements have verified that the band will be playing new songs this summer means I will hear a few new songs throughout my three shows. I just hope they don't play a majority of new songs like it seems they did in '05.

04-16-2008, 03:39 PM
how is hearing the song at the concert or listening to a taper pull later not being surprised by a song?

I'm going to try to avoid looking at the setlists before Busch, it's an early show so it shouldn't be too hard

I'm gonna look at set lists, but I will not listen to any songs from the tour... I think I will keep looking at the forums and if there is a chow with some good new songs I will download them, but I am determined not to listen to them until after the release of the album. I can't get to any shows anyway this year so I won't be hearing any new songs live at a venue.

The excitement is in the tour--I vote listening to all the material. I won't, however, listen to the album before I get it in the mail. That, I can wait for.

DMB is a band that does a lot of road testing. Why would you avoid what this band does? No one is going to be able to hear all new songs the first time. Stuff like Shotgun and Cornbread will be on the album. I'm also sure all the songs they try out this summer won't be on the new album.

But all in all DMB is a band that shines its best live. With Tim on tour this is going to a special time. Tim + New songs and seeing how they evolve. That's not something you can get back. This tour is something we can experiance as a community. But after that first listen, will it really matter if you've heard it before? Not listening to something before it's on a CD, doesn't make a song any better. Just means it's new. I'd rather hear a new DMB song live first, where most DMB songs start.
