When new material comes up over the summer what will you do? Will you go to the boards and read what everyone else thinks? Sit in your room with great speakers and listen listen listen??
I am going to not read a thing about what anyone else says and listen to it as much as I can before reading the boards or anything. We are an organization here on ants. And as organizations go, people tend to conform. I had a greater liking for Stay, Everyday, and Stand Up songs before I started going on to ants. In the same way I grew to love Last Stop and The Dreaming tree. You gain some you lose some.

The boards have never and will never affect my opinion of a song.

Well, my first shows are Camden, so I'll hold out on looking at the setlists for Pitt. After Camden, I'll obviously download those shows, but probably won't listen to any other new songs unless I saw them myself, until after my shows are done with.
And I'm not going to read any reviews about any song until I hear it myself first.

For me, it is not so much what other people say about the songs that have effected me into liking or disliking them. I have grown less apreaciative towards songs that I realized got played all the time, even if I haven't seen them that many times. That is a result of being on the boards. Also, I never used to take much time in bashing songs that I didn't care about. The boards do that a lot, and I have been influenced in that regard. I'm not a wishy washy guy, but I can admit that being a part of a group will change you. When you think about how you become more like your friends when you hang out with them a lot or something, it makes sense.

:thumbsup this is a ridiculously good post. You don't have to be gullible, or wishy washy, or weak minded to be influenced subtly by being in a group. EVERYONE is influenced by being in a group. There are no exceptions. Some are more susceptible to influence than others, clearly, but everyone is influenced.

So youre a conformist? You are easily influenced?

^I can actually sort of relate to what the dude is saying.
Sometimes observing other people's opinions naturally causes our own opinions to mature/alter. Perhaps a more observant person noticed something in a song you originally didn't, and by bringing it to your attention you enjoyed it more, or on the flip side realized it detracted from the sound of the song and liked it less as a result.

Does this happen anytime you've heard a song by any artist you haven't previously heard? Or just new songs at DMB shows? Do you just shit where you stand and give that confident thumbs up?
me too.

Listen, form an objective opinion, and probably end up arguing a lot about it whether I like them or not. Seeing as I tend to like the songs that people seem to dislike more lately (Dream So Real) I feel that if I do end up liking it, there's a good chance I'll be defending it. As I said in another post, in a lot of ways I feel like whether they put out a good album or not, the hardcore fan-base won't be really happy or satisfied. Whether they realize it now or not, I think it's just been too long for them since something good came out. I mean, seriously, if there was something that is as good as BTCS in its place in 1998 and BTCS came out this June, I think a lot of people would be really disappointed. It's not about the music anymore. Objectivity disappeared from the fan base for the most part 5-6 years ago now.

Listen and make an opinion first. I think it's ridiculous how easily swayed people are by the guys around here that just shit on everything that DMB does anymore.

I can buy that.
For me though, that problem comes from hearing every show of the tour after I down load it. In fact, I listen and have listened to too much Dave Matthews Band music over the past fifteen+ years.

I've been around the band long before there were boards to talk about them.
But I have been influenced sometimes from friends I've made to check out other bands. I haven't however been swayed in my opinion of songs that are pleasing to my ear.
