Do you want the new album to be mostly road tested or just all worked out in studio?

I'd say 2-3 brand new songs max, maybe one or two more Dave solo

I wanna be surprised when I buy the album...Let's face it. Just about everyone on here is gonna buy it, so why not wait to hear the songs until the album is released.

I think they'll try 2-3 new songs this summer, along with last summer's plus IOY & SG. That will be potentially 1/2 the album being road tested, still leaving a decent amount of songs that will be new to our ears when we buy the album.
I don't want to know every song before I buy the album. There's no thrill about a new album coming out. Its just songs we already heard, just now in a pure form.

i voted for waiting to hear. we have heard a few songs that probably will make the album, so hearing the updating versions of those is enough for me. we know we will hear new stuff, i just hope its not a lot.

I want to hear some songs, but I dont want to hear the entire album before its released. If I had to guess Id say that dmb will play 4 new songs this summer.

i wonder if the songs will be roadtested (and therefore evolve) to a point where they are different from the album. then that puts the band in a weird position: do we rerecord with these new variations or stick with the current album versions?

i guess it depends. if they are way behind in the studio, i really want road testing.so they can work things out and find what they like. but if they are almost done. id rather just wait to hear it on the album.

I doubt it's going to be any "road testing". It's basically going to be "these are the songs that are on our album that's coming out in a few months." Very much like spring 2002 tour.

Do you really believe that they are far enough in the process of making this album to have that kind of mentality? I don't feel that they have been at this project long enough to say cut and dry these are the new songs.

Seems to me most songs being talked about 'potentially' on the album were heard in Summer 06 and 07, so I don't understand about this 'road testing' theory.
Besides, those involved will release the music THEY want. As it should be.

you make me question my album 09 statement brendonIt's just the fact that, from what I've been told, the dozen or so songs they've written in Seattle isn't the same situation as the "couple dozen songs" from Stand Up, that were in various forms of incompletion. If these songs are as near done as I've been told they are, than I'm still saying around the early fall for an album. But that's based on those songs being as done and ready as it sounds.

let's just hope for the songs they have finished so far...that road testing them will polish and flesh them out some more.
hopefully besides SG they'll have a couple other 5+ min songs

Road testing = good. If the songs don't work well live, what's the point?

Sometimes Dave stumbles into much better lyrics live; I hope that they don't seal the album in the vault and are willing to go back to it (especially the lyrics) after the tour.
Then again, we've seen what revisiting albums does for the band.
A good strategy is probably to enjoy the tour and new songs, and assume nothing about the new album.

2-3 new songs + Cornbread + Shotgun + #27 + IOY and we'll get more than half of new album.
I think they'll do it in this way.

I think we should base everything off what a 15 year old says.
I hope they play the new album completely at every show.

I bet (and hope) #27, A Dream So Real, and IOY will take a break this summer to free up the sets for some more classics while including some brand new songs... not that I don't lurve me those songs, I'd just like to see some more varied sets

they should soundcheck as many as they can...but only pull out maybe 4-5 throughout the tour that they play for us :)
so i dont know what to pick

They've been working on this album since 2006, how long do you think they need?

yeah they dont need to road test material that has been road tested for 2 years

^I agree...although I think Cornbread and Shotgun would be great to see come back to embed them into the fanbase even further, especially if they are indeed going to be central pieces of the album. Eh Hee, Sister, and even IOY need to take a hike, though....a long one

They should definately play some new stuff on the road. One thought I had is maybe try out a few songs they were going to throw out and see if people like them. That way we get new stuff that will probably be awesome anyway, and we'll be surprised when the album comes out. I'm probably wrong, but its just a thought.

I want to hear Run While We Can
Shotgun I can wait on because I think the bonus disc version is awesome.
I think Eh Hee was AMAZING LIVE at Izod last year. I would love to hear it again. I think its one of their best lives.

it might not be dislike for the song, just that overplaying it may make the song loose it's 'wow' factor.

Not calling you out, but I've never understood this logic. If you like the song, you should want the band to play it live, no matter how many times they play it. How would you like to go to a show where they don't play Dreaming Tree, but they then play it at the next show because they were keeping it a "rarity." I don't get it.

^Yea I have heard Dreaming Tree twice and would love to hear it more often. Probably my favorite DMB song. I personally want to hear it at every concert I go to, I feel its a song that can never ever be over played. That and Pig

Eh Hee should keep getting played, but its not gonna make the album (already released) IOY needs to take a hike, too go find itself 2006 lyrics were better.
Sister sucks horribly.

Eh Hee could have been better then it is...It's a shame.
Shouldn't make it on the album.
Really hoping for good changes in Cornbread and tIOY....and nice lyrics for Shotgun.
A Dream So Real is great, and I cannot wait to hear Tim on all of these.

He should have just sung the damn thing ala Radio City. That was true, raw emotion right there. The iTunes single sounds jumbled, gargled, and just crummy. It's not "Dave" --- it's bizarre groaning. What happened to the pure, instrumental voice that made him famous?
Ive been reading these forums for a long time now and finally with a bit of motivation from all the buzz of a new album and tour (and a little bit of boredom at work) ive decided to finally break my silence :)
With that being said. I personally like it when bands break out new songs before they're released, but as for road testing....it kind of worries me that songs might become over produced or that they just milk the creative cow dry... Sometimes the greatest songs arent the most elaborate ones. while this band's forte is arranging songs of many layers and plateaus, i just hope they dont leave this tour and go into the studio and make changes for the sake of change. or to make a song fresher to them (that doesnt always equal improvement)
so in conclusion... road test with caution!

I like the fact that they are testing out some of the songs and at the same time they are changing....I was at Pitt over the weekend to see him and the lyrics to Cornbread and #27 were different from peidmont Park and when I saw them last year. It gives me hope seeing that dave is changing the lyrics from time to time to see what will work for the album.....but at the same time i dont want to hear too many songs that will be on the album...that would ruin it
