Hello everyone – and welcome to the 2008 Dave Matthews Band “Fantasy Tour”. I’m Jantz, as a lot of you may know already, the creator of the Fantasy Tour – but not at all the sole innovator of the tour. Last year, after struggling with personal issues, a good friend took over the league for the year (John) with the help of some amazing Ants (Maya, bradshaw, nick, taparoo, TGaucho, etc..etc..), and I – also hope that all of you – send them a large thank you for not letting this creation die.
This year though, will prove to be a stepping stone in getting this Fantasy Tour to remain in high regards to DMB fans all around the world. Several changes have taken place (largely due to a great idea stemmed from Van Horne Dog), and I will overview EVERYTHING in this thread. This thread is meant for Questions, Explanations, and also a roll call – so I know who is committed to the league in case we can fill your spot with someone that is.
So, let’s get things started.
The Rules
If you are familar with Fantasy Baseball, Football, Basketball, etc..etc.., than you know about positional picking (which will be a new aspect in this year's game).
In Fantasy Baseball owners are to choose: 1st Baseman, 2nd Baseman, Pitchers, OF’s, Closers, etc..etc.. so why not the same for our league? This year will require you to be a little bit more active, but it will show to be a lot more fairer on the scoring aspect and the actuality of it being a game rather than just a draft and watching your songs come up. Every league will have 10 players and each team will have 10 songs. This is quite the upgrade from last year’s 7, but watch how it will play out.
Each team is required to have in their “starting lineup”
Opener:
Set Song:
Set Song;
Set Song:
Set Song:
Closer:
Encore Song:
Bench Song:
Bench Song:
Bench Song:
This system will help out with the “multiple night” stands the band is playing. You can change the position of your songs every night in your League's thread, just for varification purposes. If it is not changed an hour before show time the change does not count and you will be granted points on how your song lineup was the show before.
So you may ask now, “How does this work Jantz?”
Well, listen up.
Scoring For Your Songs:
Songs will no longer be rated by Groups, songs will have a price and each owner, having certain amount of money to work with - will be able to draft those songs.
For example:
All Along The Watchtower ($2 - 3 /4 / 4)
American Baby ($2 - 3 / 4 / 4)
American Baby Intro ( $1 - 4 / 5 / 5)
Ants Marching ($5 - 2 / 3 / 3)
Each team will have a certain amount to money to work with and they can purchase any song they want. The money value of the song is determine by the songs grouping - but players no longer have to select songs based on grouping. Songs that are more likely played often will be higher priced but less riskier when it comes to points. Let’s take Ants Marching for example:
It is : Ants Marching ($5 - 2 / 3 / 3)
It cost 5 of your Fantasy Dollars to spend to draft the song, but it is worth 2 points if placed in “Set Song” / 3 points if placed in “Opener / Closer / Encore” / 3 points if played with a guest.
So if for the night your team is:
Opener: Rapunzel
Set Song: Cornbread
Set Song: Sleep To Dream Her
Set Song: Lover Lay Down
Set Song: Jimi Thing
Closer: Tripping Billies
Encore: Ants Marching
If Ants Marching closed the set - you would receive 2 points for the song being played. If Ants Marching opened the set, you would receive 2 points for the song being played. If Ants Marching was featured in the Encore you would receive 3 points for proper placement. If Ants Marching was featured in the Encore w. Danny Barnes on Banjo you would receive a maximum of 4 points for the ultimate prize for that song.
Also note: Butch Taylor, Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds (Granted they play the entire set each night) are not considered guests on these songs. So the 4 points will be hard to get)
What about new songs?
Songs like: Shotgun, Cornbread, #27, Sweet Up and Down, The Idea of You, etc..etc.. will be pre-determined values that can be bought. For new songs we will have four new songs spots available for each league that a player can buy. They will most likely be the same values as the above mentioned songs. After these four new songs are bought we will assign new songs to players who had bought “New Song” options during the draft. No other picking up of new songs is allowed.
Trading Songs:
Songs can be traded up until midway through the tour. With this said, trades must be for the same money value. If you trade away a $5 song - you should receive anything that will equal $5 (ex: two $2 songs and a $1 song). Trades are to be brought up to the league commissioner.
How much do you have to spend? – You have $45.00 to do what you please with.
The Song Values:
#27 ($5 - 2 / 3 / 3)
#34 ($2 - 3 / 4 / 4)

As you may notice we have increased our league by 20 people, and now run a 12 league system. This will in fact play a large part in the changing of the Playoff structure as well as the competition in general.
We now have conferences…to make it more of a realistic type game. The conferences are divided equally (6 in each conference).
Conference Alpine consists of: League Bartender, Busted Stuff, Granny, Lover Lay Down, Last Stop, and Pig.
Conference SPAC consists of: League So Right, Sweet Up and Down, Say Goodbye, Two Step, Hello Again, and Shotgun.
The Playoffs:
The winners of the leagues will be entered automatically into the playoffs at the end of the season. Two teams with the largest amounts of points (that did not win their league) will be named Wild Cards for the playoffs. Making it a 16 man playoff, 8 from each conference.
We will base seeding at the end of the year – based on the amount of points you received up until the playoff decision time. The bracket will be set up exactly like the bracket of an NBA Playoff system. You have the first round, the second round, the conference championship, and finally the Ultimate Final.
Owners will face each other for two/three shows each round. The highest amount of points after the two shows advances to the next round in the playoffs.
The First Round: 8/22 and 8/23
The Second Round: 8/25 and 8/26
The Conference Championship: 8/29, 8/30, 8/31 (The Gorge Run)
The Finals: 9/05, 9/06, 9/07 (The final 3 shows)
That leaves 43 shows for the regular season, and 10 shows for the playoffs. I think this system will be a lot more fun, and will work out a lot better.
The Draft:
After we receive moderators for each league, draft times will be determined amongst the league (fitting all schedules as best as we can)
Help Needed:
I am working on a website right now, but will need someone that knows more than I do about spreadsheets to help me develop an Excell sheet that will lead to easier scoring for the leagues. John if your available maybe you can help again, if not – if you know Excell please help!!
Also in regards to the website, if you know any sort of scripting that will help make updating the website either, please contact me.
We also need league captains and moderators. It will be your job to get the lineups of your 10 league members each night and take down the scoring each night (remember, bench songs don’t get points – they must be in their starting lineup). So I am going to need 11 people besides me….one for each league.
I also would like someone just to be my right hand man/woman more so a “Vice President” in the league, just to overview overall operations. (or in case I just bail out again this year, :) lol.)
Please, put all questions in this thread and I will answer them all. I think I have covered everything – and I am very comfortable with everything that is taking place. I am sure it is going to be a blast this year!
Jantz.

I should tell you, I'm starting my final exams tomorrow, so I'll be a bit pressed for time in the next week or so, and thus probably can't work a miracle with pulling out a sweet spreadsheet right away, but I'll do what i can

Last year we traded with the "free agent" pool. I would imagine it would work the same way, and you can do it with other fantasy sports.
My question would be about the new songs. When these debut will they be "assigned" or will the person who drafted highest get the first pick of them?

Here! I can't be of any help really.. I would be interested in seeing the Excel spreadsheet when its done, though.
Minarets#40
05-20-2008, 03:35 PM
It's going to be really tough making an Excel spreadsheet to do this... I read up on the rules and I've been thinking about it for a little while and there are some serious issues with doing this through a spreadsheet. Since everyone can change up their lineup every night, it requires changing something for everyone every show. That's a pretty big challenge to accomodate through a spreadsheet. I think the only chance for making the scoring not all by hand is to make some sort of website where people can go in and change up their lineup themselves, and which uses some sort of program to calculate the scores. Last year, Maya's boyfriend made some kind of website that used the old scoring method pretty effectively. I don't want to ask of him to make something like that again, since it was a lot of work and it would suck to have to go back and completely revamp it. However, I'd say the chances of someone figuring out how to effectively use Excel for this are slim. The old scoring method made it pretty easy to do, since there wasn't much change in people's songs on a night-to-night basis.
I don't really know how to make a website that is capable of doing that. I just don't know how to do all the HTML. I'm decently adept with using some other programming languages, so I could at least be helpful for advising anyone about coding techniques for how to approach the problem.
The tour starts in just over a week, so I'd say priority number one should be getting everyone situated for a song draft. Last year, the draft took place on June 12th, and the first show was on July 8th. Then the actual tour started on August 1st. It's really the 11th hour. This thing needs to get going NOW or else there's goinig to be some chaos. Once the band plays their first show the draft is going to be impossible to run fairly.
Recommendation from the person who ran the tour last year: Jantz you need to get this thing organized NOW. You haven't posted in this forum in a few days, which is putting everyone confused.
Things that have to happen in the next 2 or 3 days:
- Moderators for each league need to be picked
- Those moderators need to pick a day for the draft (I'd recommend Thursday the 29th, so people have time to plan around it)
- PMs need to be sent out to every person in each league, telling them everything that's going on.
- Threads need to be started for each league that will clarify what's going on in that league, and updated need to be kept up.
- League Moderators need to get everyone's email addresses and AIM screennames so that they can be sure they're ready for the draft.
- Jantz needs to explain to all the League Moderators exactly what the expectations are throughout the tour.
I am available to advise and help as much as needed. As I said though, I'm going to disappear from the forums the day the tour starts, because I don't want to know about the setlists, and I'm sure there's going to be lots of discussion about what songs are being played.

Yeah the most efficient way of having a league would be something how yahoo's fantasy leagues run, but I have no idea on how to create something like that, and it seems like were running out of time. If mods are needed or help with anything im here.

1. Lost sucks, I can't believe so many people watch it.
2. We have some slackers in our league (Pig), as only 4 people have posted in the thread. If there are similar leagues, can we just combine leagues at this point? Considering how close draft time is (or needs to be), should we condense leagues where participation is lower than expected? OR maybe post a thread in DMBc reminding folks to come to this thread?

I posted this in the other stickied thread, but it may be more appropriate here:
here's a question: can we "guess" our song placement for extra points (ie. like the closer and opener positions)? for instance, in stead of this set-up:
Opener
Song
Song
Song
Song
Closer
Encore
we guess the placement of the four main-set songs? so it could be something like this:
Opener: OSW
#3: Granny
#8: Bartender
#10: Nancies
#15: Jimi Thing
Closer: Bayou
Encore: The Last Stop
nothing would change, except that if you did guess the placement right, you get the same amount as if you had guessed one of the other three spots (opener, closer, encore).
just a thought that could make it a little more dynamic and interesting . . .

Please tell me if this was answered already, but I didn't see it answered the first time I asked. When/If new songs debut will they be randomly "assigned" or will they be awarded by who drafted "New Song" first? Also, what if they debut more than 4 new ones? Will there be more "New Song" slots opened for people to trade for?

What about new songs?
Songs like: Shotgun, Cornbread, #27, Sweet Up and Down, The Idea of You, etc..etc.. will be pre-determined values that can be bought. For new songs we will have four new songs spots available for each league that a player can buy. They will most likely be the same values as the above mentioned songs. After these four new songs are bought we will assign new songs to players who had bought “New Song” options during the draft. No other picking up of new songs is allowed.

Didn't see that last part. Thanks for pointing it out.
As for the picking song spots. I think that might be something that would probably be more worth discussing for next season (letting the game evolve further, and tour starts tonight). My personal opinion on that is. If I wanted to try to pick the right spots for songs to get extra points I'd just go play the Set List Game. I like the slight obscurity of it. Trying to pick spots would probably turn me of of the game.

i like the pickin spots idea..... and a question that i havent seen answered about the new songs is - what if there are only 2 or 3 - do they go to the first 2 or 3 teams that picked " new song " or do they go to everyone who picked new song>?

What about new songs?
Songs like: Shotgun, Cornbread, #27, Sweet Up and Down, The Idea of You, etc..etc.. will be pre-determined values that can be bought. For new songs we will have four new songs spots available for each league that a player can buy. They will most likely be the same values as the above mentioned songs. After these four new songs are bought we will assign new songs to players who had bought “New Song” options during the draft. No other picking up of new songs is allowed.
This is the best rule we could have made.

Alright guys, what do we do with Thank You? Obviously it's a cover song but does that mean that every time a cover that wasn't listed on the original draft roster is played, the person who drafted "Cover Song" gets points?

I'm going to score it as a "Cover Song", but if another cover is played this tour (Money perhaps), we're gonna have to talk.

I'm pretty sure "Cover Song" is in their "repertoire" so the setlist guy can put up something when he recognizes a song but doesn't know the name (ie. the first time a cover song is played). I've seen it happen before
PS - did Dave dedicate the song to Butch or anything? I kind of doubt it will be showing up again

Alright, here is what I’m going to do in my league about three cover songs being played tonight. I am not going to give the person who has “Cover Song” points for each one getting played. Instead, I am going to give them credit for one being played and then give them first dibs on adding ONE of them from waivers, while at the same time allowing them to keep “Cover Song”. After they have selected which one they want (and no, they can’t pick up Money and have it count for both the Floyd and Beatles cover), I will allow the others in my league to add no more than one of them (Thank You included). They will not be able to do so however until midnight of June 2nd . That gives everyone a head’s up. I feel this is fair.

i feel that is bullshit. i looked over the rules and asked around before drafting 'cover song' and nothing was ever said like this. if you wanted this to be the case, should have said so before the tour started, not after your getting merked by the guy in your league with cover song.

I think the "Cover Song" should only count once per show, when instances of last night occur where there are multiple covers played. But i think "Cover Song" should still count for these new covers until they begin to show regularity in the setlits.
That's just my idea on it, coming from someone who drafted "Cover Song". This should definitely be an interesting topic to handle this year.

that's more absurd than Clay's idea. No way in hell is anybody going to be okay with a song choice counting for more than one song.

Cover song cant be counted for everyone played a night. If that was the case we wouldnt have 4 new songs, we would just have one and the person would get credit for all of them. The best route is giving them credit for one of them, and if they start to stick around for more than a few shows, it becomes its seperate song.

Thats what i was thinking. It cant be any other way than just not counting the song at all. Waivers would just make it way too unfair really no matter what you do. :shrug
I was thinking of maybe suggesting that we do the songs in order:
Example:
Thank You goes to Cover Song
Melissa to New Song #1
Money (pink floyd) to New Song #2
Money (Thats what I want) New Song #3
and then whatever other song pops up.
Anything after that will not be scored.

Major problem with this though, is that these cover songs are different than new songs. So that kind of screws those people that drafted New Song # with the idea that it would be a new DMB song they would get. And as a person with "cover song" i really dont want Thank You in place of it. I think we need to wait to see if these covers are even played more than once

I think a fair way to do it is to keep counting these as points for whoever has the "Cover Song" in each league. But if multiple covers are played during each show, than you should only give points out for one cover being played. Then if there are other covers played then they are not given points for those. That way the person with "cover song" does not go crazy with points.
My major concern is that if this is a very heavy cover tour, and we start to distribute these songs out to people. It will start to hurt the person with "cover song" in each league. Just have to find a fair way so nobody is hurt on both sides.
Hope some of that made sense, it did in my head...lol

I agree to certain extent, but how will we determine "cover song"? We cant score it anytime they play TY, Money(either one) or Melissa. We need to find a song to put in its place. As far as new songs go, they are new song, im not nitpicking at the rules (well i guess i am :rolleyes), but the setlist game counts them as new songs, so does the rest of the setlist games. I think we need to wait until after Camden and make a decision.*sigh, I have been on Ants so much lately even I bitch... and im high... :eek) And wheres Jantz in all this? :lol

See I would be fine with this but if this tour continues as is, Thats almost a guaranteed 6 points every show, 10 if a guest comes out... That is way too unfair. But I say we wait for a bit and see what happens. If 2 of these covers are just one time things, i would be fine with it. But do you see my point? :)

it sucks to only get 2 points for all the covers. but i'm in the same boat, and i think it would be unfair for me to capitalize that much on all the covers.
I agree, I've been on ants so much lately i feel like i am getting close to bitching about stuff. Trying not to though..lol.
We definitely need Jantz in here to decide a final ruling, that way all the leagues are doing this the same way. I definitely think we should wait a couple shows to see how this all unfolds. For all we know, they may not play those covers again, and just constantly bust out new covers through out the tour.

rules are rules for a reason. not so u can change them when shit doesnt go ur way. its like if u picked up some shitty guy in fan hockey who all of a sudden started playin at center and on the wing and got really good. you would get points for both positions and a lot more than anyone thought you were gona. so what you change the rules? no, you try to close ur buttcheaks and take whats commin to ya.
going into the draft, most covers that they play had their own choice and seeing as how not this many new covers are usually played, 'cover song' didnt seem that attractive to most. however, it was the steal of the draft and changing the rules to counteract that is bullshit. i dont play that shit. thats why i quit.

I believe that the rules for points are as follows
If your song gets played you will get at least the first number
If your song gets a special spot you will get the second number as opposed to the first number
If your song has a guest you the third number will be added to what you previously had
SO the max for a singular song would be the addition of the second number and the third number

It seemed like it was hit or miss. There were people that were all for it, and then for some reason or another just disappeared.
Maybe if it is condensed a bit next year. Seemed like it tried to be rather big this year, and that leaves more opportunity for less organization.
I do think the scoring system and all of that was a really good idea this year.

It wasn't has organized has some would have wanted it to be. I know the league I was in, it was smoothly and the playoffs went fine. Heck, I'm not complaining since I won :lol. I could be wrong but I think 2 leagues fell apart but the others were fine.
The only thing I would like to change is drafting. That was not organized and we had to do it last minute. Thankfully it worked out for our league, but maybe next year we start the organization process a little earlier.
And I'll mention it now, I'll participate again and even be a mod.

I definitely agree. 2 leagues did completely fall apart, and therefore did not get anyone into the playoffs. There was definitely alot of confusion at the beginning with drafting. I think problem was, whoever had set it all up was not around as often and everyone was left wondering. Having to do the drafting basically a day before the tour started could have been prevented. It also i feel made it very difficult to try and do any trading since the concerts started immediately.
Playoffs i feel went fantastic. Maybe it had something to do with me helping :D jk. I am definitely volunteering to step up next year and do more.
