View Full Version : Rain Damage, #27, and Other Stuff from Hershey

Hey All:
Just back from Hershey and, since I was with my brother and sister in law, I got to go backstage before the show and learned some cool stuff. Here's what I heard:
1. The reason that the side video screens and the screen that lifts at the start of the show were dark tonight is that the rain got in to the circuits and bascially fried them. It was funny because the crew guys said about an hour before the show that, with all the rain, they had no idea what would work and what wouldn't and they were crossing their fingers that the other stuff would work. So, for those that thought the stage was darker tonight...now you know why.
2. I sat right behind Dave having shrimp salad in the band area before the show. He was talking to some younger fans (or friends or family...not sure) and they were talking about #27. He said that the band has noticed that the song hasn't seemed to catch on with the fans and they won't be playing it as regularly as they were.
3. Dave also made a comment about some girl in the stands who was screaming "ANGEL" at the top of her lungs to him when he was standing in the open area backstage where the fans can see in to. For those that haven't been to Hershey, from section 25, you can look right down in to part of the backstage area. He was laughing about the girl and kept pretending to be a girl yelling Angel...was pretty funny.
That's all I heard. I said hello to Dave, Rashawn, and Tim, but didn't get in to any conversations. I'm still very intimidated by them.
As for the show, it wasn't my favorite. My brother has been to 102 shows and he said it was in the lower quarter of the shows he's seen.
Off to bed. twss:eek

I wouldn't mind seeing like a 4-5 minute version of Angel, it's bluesey and jazzy. Would be hard to do without Butch though

27 was cooling off for sure, needs something to put it over the top. Either let it fade or jazz it up DMB. :thumbsup

I was just about to start a thread about #27, since it's been absent for the last like 7 shows but I guess this answers my question... What a shame, my favorite of the '07 songs for sure

#27 was by far the weakest of the new songs. I'm glad they've decided to put it on the backburner

The only reason people don't seem as into #27 is b/c they played it almost every single show last summer and almost every show the beginning of this tour. DMB needs to learn moderation with new songs. They write something new like the 2004 songs, IOY, #27, Corn Bread, etc ... and they play it EVERY NIGHT. Even on both nights of a 2 night stand when they have to realize they have a lot of repeat concert goers who just heard it the night before.
Personally I like #27, but I've already seen it 10 times! There are a lot of other songs I've seen less than 10 times that I'd rather they mix in now and then.

Really? Because there's not much complaining about Cornbread anymore, and that song has literally been played at every single (public) DMB show since night one of summer 07.
I think it goes a little deeper than just overplaying.

27 is amazing though.

Can I ask how you got backstage? How does one, such as myself, get that opportunity?? I always hear about it, but don't know how its done.
Awesome review. Thanks! :)

My brother and his wife are friends with Dave and Butch (moment of silence). My brother started his own company several years ago and they give a lot of money to charity and have done lots of charitable work with Dave and Butch. I know he played golf with Butch a few years back for a foundation in Virginia. Not sure what else they've done.
When they go to shows, they get their tickets thru the band and have the all access passes that you see people wearing. I've been backstage 3 times now and have never gotten the nerve to say more than hello to anyone except Butch (last year of course). I'm younger and have no idea what to say to them besides talking DMB stuff which I'm sure they get tired of hearing.
I have no idea how to tell you to get there. Be lucky and know someone is the best advice I can give. If it were easy, everyone would be back there.
Cheers!

The main difference I can see between #27 and Cornbread (and maybe this is why people aren't complaining about Cornbread) is that both songs needed to become more polished from how they sounded last summer and only Cornbread evolved. Cornbread really rocks with Tim playing on it. It's still weak lyrically but it's a lot of fun musically so I think people are overlooking the lyrics for now. #27 on the other hand sounds pretty much the same now as it did in 2007, so maybe fans who enjoyed it at first b/c it was new are now getting annoyed with it b/c Dave hasn't done much to improve it lyrically. I think eventually people will feel the same way about Cornbread unless Dave does something about those lyrics as well.
Actually thinking about it now I guess the main complaint about every new song the past few years has been the lyrics. Most of them have been decent to very good muscially. People just aren't satisfied b/c they don't compare lyrically to UTTAD/Crash/BTCS songs.

Thanks for the reply and the advice!! I am sure if I even get the golden opportunity to meet anyone from the band, I will be awestruck and also not have the nerve to say more than hello.
Thanks!

i liked #27 but i agree it wasnt catching on as much. it honestly reminded me a lot of that Bob Seger song "on the road again."
IMO: Cornbread = Eh Hee = Shotgun > #27 > Idea of You
dont get me wrong I like all of these songs, but I think IOY is the weakest link...

Awesome story. I would have been intimidated too....did you at least get to shake his hand.
Anyway, that is too bad about 27. It and shotgun are definitely my favorite post Stand Up songs.
