Rogue

Another high energy, musically solid outing. Crowd wasn't as into it as some other venues for some reason. A beautiful day, band came on as sun went behind the trees. It doesn't get dark here until about 10:30, like the freakin' arctic or something.
Dave seemed to get a little ticked at one point early on. I got the impression that someone yelled something or had something on a sign right up front that he took as disrespectful about LeRoi. I'll be interested to hear what others say.
Mrs. Rogue met Olive and her crew somewhere here on Friday night I think.
Seek Up - my favorite opener. A slow, melodic version tonight. Great start.
Eh Hee - Dave introduced this by saying he was inspired by a trip to Africa with his wife
and kids. Not African music, but what came to him from it. Again, Tim and Jeff are fitting in nicely.
Grey Street - This song just keeps getting better. So good to see it in heavy concert rotation this year. I'm always surprised when they do it this early in a show because it seems so vocally demanding for that guy that does most of the singin'. Why the font just jumped up in size is beyond me.
Rhyme And Reason - Mellowed out, good feeling song.
Proudest Monkey - I know it's not a causal fan favorite, but anytime I get these UTTAD songs, I get sentimental and appreciate them.
:monkey
Satellite - OK, this is a slow beautiful version. The band is playing so crisp on these old songs. I mean musically near perfection.
Corn Bread - This song is getting better and better at the shows. Easily the best one I've seen yet.
So Damn Lucky - OK, pee break for me. Mrs. Rogue digs it alot.
#41<IMG alt="...>" src="http://www.antsmarching.org/images/arrowintosong.gif"> - BEEEE YOOOOO TEEEEE FULLLLLL song.
You Might Die Trying - Very smooth segue from #41 to YMDT. High energy, Dave's neck was all strained and sinewey from making that grimace he makes when he's hitting certain notes. Solid parts by, I think, everyone who got in a little solo time here.
Sledgehammer - What can I say? The crowds are loving this. Unlike Charlotte, when I thought I observed that Dave was way more into this than the others, they seemed to have fun with it last night.
Tripping Billies - Woo-Hoo! Are you kidding me? Fully 1/2 the songs so far are on UTTAD. How many years have we been hearing on Ants that we need more UTTAD songs in the rotation? Boyd kicked its ass.
#27 - Nice spot in the night for this. I don't mind saying that the new songs we've heard for the past couple of tours are gonna make a great album someday. :cool
Jimi Thing - Guys and gals, they are absolutely kicking ass and taking names with their all time best Jam song. Night in and night out, Jimi Thing is a real treat this year. Ho - LEE - SHIT this was another smokin' version. Solos, playing around, some spontaneity, and Carter and Stefan leading it all with what must be the most precise rhythm section in the world.
So Much To Say - OK, a real standard version with a few of the freeze-tag bits at the end.
Anyone Seen The Bridge - Thanks again, Fonzi. This rocked.
Too Much - Powerful rocking on TM tonight. Can't say I ever get tired of this and they keep it fresh for this fan.
Ants Marching - Shorter intro than Charlotte (that intro was really fun and probably a result of Rashawn and Jeff getting their shit together on Jeff's first night). If I hear Ants at every show I go to forever, it'll be just fine with me.
Encore:
Gravedigger - nicely done. Loud, almost peppy for such a dark song. DMB has a way of doing this like great blues musicians do.
Louisiana Bayou - Dave intro'd this by talking about visiting with some mayor's wife in LA. She talked about these 2 boys who she thought were sleeping but turned out to be dead. I hadn't heard that before.
Thank You - My first time seeing it LIVE. I left the VIP section and went to the big lawn. Walked right to the front of stage right and danced my fool ass off. About 1/2way through a couple of girls asked if they could move in front of me b/c I was taller than they were. Of course I moved back for them. I like this cover. The energy, lyrics, and energy fit so well with my image and experience of DMB shows that it seems natural. Great way to wrap up.
As usual, I could have enjoyed a few more hours from the guys but this was a good show. I was surprised that no other guests showed up. So many folks that have played with them in the past are here off and on through the weekend that I about 1/2 expected some guesting.
As I said in my Charlotte review, believe the hype about the Summer 2008 tour. This year has great energy and is musically the best I've heard the band in at least 10 years. Quit your job, call in sick, sell something on Ebay, whatever you have to do. But catch a show this summer. It's really something special. The differences may be subtle in lots of ways, but these guys are playing their asses off and seem to be more together on the music than they have in awhile.
That's a wrap. Next review: probably L'ville or Cincy.
