What's up guys, I just got back home from Atlanta. It was a great time, even though I went by myself. I made it there around 6:00, and still got great parking, right by the main entrance. Anyways, here's my review debut.
So, the concert kicked off with Bartender. Now, I really enjoyed the song, and loved the energy to open the show. It was also my first time seeing it, so that may have something to do with it.
So Damn Lucky - This was a good one. There wasn't anything noteworthy about it.
Everyday - This was "the restroom song". Once it started, I heard everyone mention the bathroom. It had the Buffalo Herd Interpolation in it. I had to hear some dick make verbal love to Boyd through it though. The entire time I heard "This guy is awesome. The violinist is the greatest. etc. etc.".
Granny - This was a great one. Before the song, Dave mentioned Leroi's status and all that, so that was a neat extra bit. Another funny thing was in the middle of it, some guy asked another dude what the name of the song was. Dude says, "It's Halloween." So from there you hear several "It's Halloween" comments. I laughed.
Jimi Thing - This was a good one, better than most I've heard. Maybe it was Jeff Coffin killing it on the sax, or maybe it was no ABI killing Dave's chords. It wasn't quite as long and drawn out as they usually are too.
Seek Up - A highlight of the show. Absolutely killer.
Old Dirt Hill - Meh. I don't really dig the song, so I wasn't blown away by it or anything. It was pretty quiet too.
Corn Bread - Another one I don't really dig. I don't know the lyrics, so I didn't enjoy it as much.
You Might Die Trying - Alright, I'm going on the record and saying this. I love this song. I know alot don't, but I love the ending to it, when Dave gets into that illegible singing and jamming. The singing wasn't as good as the 5-30 show, but I really enjoyed it anyways. I loved this song.
Sledgehammer - This is one of my favorite covers this year. In fact, it is my favorite cover. And it was short enough for me to get the entire thing on my digital camera.
Out Of My Hands - I would define this as the "energy killer". Once this song started, I looked around the lawn, and there were alot of people sitting down. Personally, I hoped for Stolen Away, but I wasn't so lucky.
Eh Hee - Great song. This was another one that I managed to get the entire thing on my camera.
Money - My second favorite cover. They did a great job with this one too.
So Much To Say - A crowd classic. This was one of the few songs that I heard the people around me sing the entire song.
Anyone Seen The Bridge - Typical segue, but they did the whole stopping for a time, then starting, and stopping, etc.
Too Much - Another crowd favorite. This one was good, as usual, and Dave did some fantastic scatting on this one too.
Tripping Billies - This was another live debut for me, and it was a pleasure to hear, considering that I thought Too Much was the end. I love this song and jam, too.
Encore Break - The main reason I mention this was because when the band returned to the stage, Dave once again mentioned Leroi's status, and requested that the crowd help make a video, where everyone chanted "We want Roi!"
Crash Into Me - I thought this was a terrific song, and this is one of my favorite songs to boot. Dave mentioned something about a 12-year-old boy who had several operations or something like that before he played it. Or was it a 9-year-old boy? I don't remember.
Ants Marching - Even though it was the show closer, and I wanted it to be a mid-set sort of thing, it was still great to hear it live. I always love hearing the crowd sing without Dave.
So, that's my rough review of the show. I don't know how you guys will take it, since I've never done one, and I can't comment on the individual musicians, because I don't really know what to critique as far as "Jeff Coffin did what Roi couldn't", or "Boyd was so out of tune, what was he thinking?" I thought everyone mixed well, and there wasn't any song where I thought that one instrument drowned out the others (minus solos). Dave's voice sounded great, and I enjoyed the entire show.
Now, to critique the setlist. First things first, aside from Old Dirt Hill and Out Of My Hands, I thought it was good. It's not that I don't enjoy Stand Up, I just don't like those songs. I was looking for a couple of songs - Say Goodbye, Don't Drink the Water, What You Are, Two Step, #41, Grey Street, and Sister. I didn't get those, however, the songs that I got to hear the live debut of - Bartender, Seek Up, Granny, and Sledgehammer (because it's my favorite cover) made up for what I missed.
I don't think this was the greatest show. It was good, but several shows before were better, I think.

Learn the lyrics, this song is out of control. It blew me away at the Piedmont Park concert.

I'd say don't learn the lyrics to Cornbread...it will only lower your IQ.

this hasn't been said but corn bread definitely had a new jam. jeff picked it up as tim was finishing his solo, nothing crazy. just definitely a different jam then normal.
downloads i'd recommend - corn bread (for new jam), ymdt (tim.. nuff said), anyone seen the bridge, bartender. everything else was standard.

Don't worry, I don't think Dave really does either.

Just wanted to post a quick review of last nights show....had its ups and downs. First half was sick then it slowed a bit. Band had lots of energy, the crowd not so much..........
Bartender....Love it as an opener, especially effective with the screen getting raised.
So Damn Lucky.....Gets better everytime they play it. Love the outro, probaby my favorite thing from this tour so far.
Everyday....ehh, I will say it sucks to see it pop up on a setlist from home, but at the show I don't mind it that much. Standard version. Crowd kinda let me down on the hani hani come and dance with me intro.
Granny....Love it, would take it at any show. I haven't heard it live since 02 believe it or not. Great version.
Jimi Thing...WOW, best Jimi I've ever heard, and I've heard it probably 30 times. This one made this show a must download in my opinion. Jeff and Rashawn were amazing. Energy was off the chain for the jam and a great scat by Mr Matthews.
Seek Up...suprise in the mid-set and I was pumped. Sadly, the crowd didnt' seem to share my enthusiasm. Not the best version as Jeff and Rashawn struggled a bit with the intro and Dave stuggled a bit remembering the words and mumbled through alot of it.
Old Dirt Hill.....the fun had to end sometime right? Yes it has gotten alot better since 05 and its no longer terrible, its just not good. No matter how they change it up musically (and I like what they've done to it musically) its just pure shit lyrics and therefore unsavable imo.
Cornbread....ok I know many hate this song but I think its fun. Sure I'd rather hear alot of other things but I enjoy this song and its obvious the band does as well. Its gets better everytime they play it and Tim shreds the tune plain and simple. It was cool to see Dave do the "thank you" dance during the jam. That way I got to see the highlight of thank you without it taking up a valuable set spot LOL
You Might Die Trying...great tune, especially after you get past the verses LOL. This has one of the best jams of any song they play these days. Coffin melted my face off then Tim proceeded to melt my brain. Good Shit.
Sledgehammer...sorry guys, I love it. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not expected it.
Out of my hands...killed any energy that YMDT and sledgehammer had built up with the crowd. Highlight was the davespeak when they rolled out the piano...."this is the box I keep my dead monkey in. Yes, I had a monkey but he died"
Eh hee....not my favorite by any means but it doesn't piss me off like some on these boards. I will say that this song should probably never be played without Timmy because he saves it.
Money....was kinda bummed when about this one. I love it and they do a kick ass job and it has great Timmy but I knew it was starting to get late and didn't really care about hearing another cover. Plus I've heard it from all the tapes so far this summer.
SMTS>ASTB>TM......smts was standard. I have to listen to the tapes to figure out exactly what happened but someone fucked up the intro. I think Carter may have came in too early but something was off. Dave kept turning around to him and Stephan and laughing thru the whole tune. ASTB the best of the "triplets" and it rocks my socks. TM standard with great Timmy, Jeff and Rashawn. Figured this would close but........
Billies..........LOVE the extended nature intro and this tune really got the crowd going (finally). Will take a billies set closer anyday.
Crash.....ehhh would rather not hear it but since it was what a sick kid in the "make a wish" program asked them to play for him before the show, I have no problem with it.....good for him.
Ants....Standard with extended Boyd. They can close everyshow with this and I wouldn't complain...its the DMB anthem imo.
Overall a decent show and the band was really into it for the amount of energy the crowd had. Dave was in a strange mood and gave us some good Davespeak. It was kinda creepy the way he stared at this nasty chick in the front row while singing half the night. She (like most chicks at a DMB show) had basically no clothing on but anyway.........the highlight of my show was the world record setting duck and run me and my friend pulled off after the show. 3rd row...ants ended at 11:03 and we were on the interstate at 11:12....it was epic and something that I will tell my children about. Oh, and just a personal note. To the guy in front of me who felt it made him look really cool to tell everyone in earshot what each song was after the first few bars were played........you're the biggest douche on the planet. Thanks.

I just think the songs werent that bad it was just the placement within the setlist that mad this a mediocre show. I was really upset when i heard what the soundcheck was and the fact we didnt get DIDO Shotgun or SUgar Will. It may be becasue in atlanta we have been spoiled the past 4 years. it also didnt help that dave carter Rashawn and Jeff could not get on the same page on two or three songs.

That and the encore that we should have gotten but didn't.... that sucks.
They rocked out everything they played though.... I really can't ask for more than that.
Great to be there, but outside of a few songs, it won't be in my ipod rotation for long.

For the past couple of years, there has been some decent seperation between Bristow / Charlotte / Atlanta (except for maybe last year.. I missed Piedmont Park). I wish they'd get back to that so I don't get burn't out seeing shows that are too similar.

i just got back and did not enjoy this concert near as much as my previous 8 shows. YMDT was the highlight for me which is really sad saying but it has turned into an excellent song. Granny was awesome to hear, SDL's outro is fucking sweet. Other than that it was a subpar show. Im not purposely being negative but it was a bad show in my opinion (bad for DMB that is).

all i will say negatively is that for a tour that could trump 2000, they sure have gotten comfortable with certain songs.

It was alright.
I was at Rothbury and the shows were pretty similar. The band had much more energy at Rothbury. Of course I was up front for Rothbury and was pretty far back for Atlanta. Tripping Billies was a lot of fun.

That is a great point. I hate to say it, but I do go all over the country last three summers, and this was the least effective show for the true fan. I know I know I know Dave plays what he wants to play and, "If you don't like it, what I supposed to do?"
Nothing Dave, but I am looking forward to the other "A" now: ALPINE:multi :multi

This show was nothing more than a generic DMB show for this year. But DMB puts on a rocking show. Thank Christ I don't care enough (anymore) to want to hear certain things over other. Maybe, cause I've seen enough. Or maybe, just because I've learned to enjoy the band for what they are. I don't expect suprises every night, naturally I don't expect them at all, anymore. All I know is that this band has always treated me right. And after all the shows they still have all the appeal they used to have...it's just different now.
I guess one of the best things that happened for me with this band was reverting. The first years I was all about the sets and the rare songs and all that other bs that makes it fun to be a "true fan," as stated above. I didn't drink or smoke, but just went with the music. Somewhere along the line, about 2004, I think, I just stopped caring about that. I think it came with seeing hundreds and hundreds of bands from bars, festivals, work, etc. that finally gave DMB a break. They honestly put on the most entertaining, crowd-enthralling, back-to-back-to-back loud, crisp, tighter-than-any-other-band show that I've seen. And I've seen almost anyone that you could compare to.
Now to me, as shameful as it may sound to the traditional old-school fan, I am there for the party. I like to drink a little, smoke a little, and then hit the "church service" if you will for a little soul refreshing. This band hasn't been the same since and I love them for it. In turn, the suprises came back. #34 in 2005, are you kidding. and they still happen three years later (how about a litte Water/Wine for the first time in 13 years at Busch? How about a one time only Dave solo, Falling off the roof at Toyota?) After all these shows I still haven't been to one show where I haven't heard something before that night. To me, that is still impressive.
Having said that, the Atlanta show was rocking the whole night, with only one song that really slowed things down, OOMY, obviously, which allowed many of us (and them, I'm sure) to grab some much needed water. I can appreciate that. I guess I can only speak for myself, but I was grooving the whole night other than that. My advice is to not care so much and just let the music move you, regardless of what's playing.
The music won't last forever, guys...time is short.

After driving 4 1/2 hours to see DMB, battling ridiculous traffic (moved 1 mile in 1 hour), and a poor location, the show was the worst I have ever seen. I am sooooo disappointed. There were a few good jams but this is far from what the band typically performs.

Not if you've been watching the sets for this tour...you could pretty much predict what you would get in the set.
I suggest downloading the concert because the jams are the best DMB has had since the really early/raw days (think old school Jimi Thing).
If this was the worst show you've seen DMB perform then I'm curious at to which shows you've been to.
I understand all the pre-concert bullshit, and I can even somewhat understand the people who are really affected by other concert-goers that aren't enjoying the concert in the way that they would prefer (that's just human "the world revolves around me" nature), but I have been a part of a many DMB trips where some really shitty shitty shitty things happened before the actual show and unless you get a one song encore (which is just low-cincy 06) then you pretty much know what you are getting into.

Right on man. I was at Camden, Hartford, and SPAC this year. I downloaded Atlanta, the band was sooooo on point. Sounds like one of the best shows this year. Great Jams, Great mix... some need to be more gracious around here.
