Well, sadly enough, this was the only show I am able to go to this year, so I guess I’ll do a review.
We arrived at the venue just before four o’clock and were just in time to hear the soundcheck. I was already excited about the show, but the soundcheck pushed that excitement to a whole different level. Prepare for Drive In, Drive Out in West Palm! It was blazing hot in the lots and would have been easy to drain you of a lot of energy or get a heat stroke, (“which apparently makes you crap your pants. You wouldn’t wanna do that in a crowd.”– Dave) if you didn’t watch yourself. We grilled some burgers and hot dogs and had a grand ole time.
I had never listened to Gomez before the concert last night, but I think I’ll get some of their music now. They were a nice opener!
Don’t Drink the Water – I called Two Step hoping for some nice improv lyrics about the lightning and the torrential downpour that occurred before the show, but the was a great replacement. The band sounded tighter than ever and Dave’s voice was fantastic. This song blew the roof off of the place from the get-go.
Seek Up – I wasn’t expecting to see this in the #2 slot and it was a pleasant surprise. The intro jam seemed longer than normal, but that’s a great thing. Jeff seemed to take a little bit to get going on this one, but when he finally did he was amazing. This is one of my favorites to hear at a show and I’m glad I was graced by its presence again.
So Damn Lucky – I was really hoping that they wouldn’t leave this one out of the set for some reason for this show because this song is one of my all time favorites. They absolutely murdered this one! I loved the round and round outro, but it got even better during the extending wailing section, although I must say that Dave’s screaming gets a little out of hand towards the end. Dave’s falsettos sounded great in this song just like they have all tour. I love Tim’s parts in this one. They totally make this song the beast that it is. It’s amazing what a minute can do!
The Song that Jane Likes – I heard this one during soundcheck and was super pumped about it because they only played it once through and it sounded show ready. Sure enough, when he announced the song I freaked out because I haven’t heard it at a show since 2003. Dave seemed to slightly stumble over a couple of lyrics, but it was very minor and didn’t affect the quality of the song at all. In fact, no one else probably even noticed. A fun, classic DMB song!
Eh Hee – There’s not much to say about this one except that it’s better than last year, Tim really shines. Nice song.
#27 – This one was unexpected because I thought it was slowly fading out of the rotation altogether. I have to admit, it was sort of a buzzkill, but a good song nonetheless. I don’t like this one as much as I did last year…
Sugar Will – Well I’ve had this creeping suspicion that this song would rear its head in Tampa for the past week or so and after I heard it nailed during soundcheck I knew it was going to happen. The new intro is no bullshit and straight into the song and I like it much better than the dragged out bass solo intro. The song is also more upbeat than the 2004 versions, which is also a plus. I really liked Dave’s vocal delivery and the “what will become of it?” lyrics thrown in the chorus. Rashawn showed GREAT musicianship in this one as did Timmy. I really appreciate the way the tune ends too. Definitely listen to the recording of this song if you haven’t already!
Cornbread – This was a really fun song and the crowd ate it up. It is sooo much tighter than last year and Tim rips it a new asshole. Dave was dancing like crazy during Tim’s solo, which was very enjoyable to watch. My only complaint about this one was the sound of the bass drum during the intro. It sounded like the speakers were cracking. Not a good thing…
Sledgehammer – Whew! This song and their cover of it is great! The best of the covers this year and the only one that I REALLY wanted to hear. I was thankful to hear it. The crowd really got into it.
Grey Street – I had a good idea that it was coming when I saw Monk come around with the W65 (which I think is much better than his new 12-string…). The crowd went wild on this one. It sounds so much better without Butch’s organ! Dave’s voice sounded great and Coffin melted faces once again!
Out of My Hands – I was kind of hoping to hear A Dream So Real, but this one really surprised me performance-wise. The new outro is great!
Smooth Rider – When I saw the electric guitar I immediately became scared. Then this shitpile of a song was played and my worst fears were confirmed. The only good things about this song were that it was better than the 2005 and 2006 performances that I heard and that it ended. Eww.
Louisiana Bayou – Are you fucking kidding me!? I’ve heard this song at every show I’ve been to since the release of Stand Up (seven times so far…), and I only liked it the first two times I heard it. I’ve never been so close to sitting down at a show in my life. This song gives me a headache.
#41 – A great way to get things turned back around for the good. Coffin absolutely killed this song. I giggled a little bit when Boyd went into another solo after Jeff because it would be nearly impossible to follow his solo. The Everyday outro seems to have met its demise, but the crowd still tried to force it. Great song!
Anyone Seen the Bridge>>Too Much – Has anyone seen that confounded bridge? I’m pretty sure the band has. They rocked it out! The Space Odyssey interpolation was awesome and Rashawn weakened the knees of every person there. Too Much was standard and rocking.
Two Step – What a fantastic set closer! Dave sang some cool improve lyrics from the perspective of a little child talking to his/her father (something like , “Tell me a story, one that I can believe, one that I can hold onto). Nothing about this song was a drag. Great performance!
Ants Marching – When I checked the time I knew that they only had time for one song in the encore because of curfew. They couldn’t have picked a better song for a one song encore! There was no Dave and Tim intro and no extended jam intro. It was just an outstanding, straight-through performance. What a way to end a show!
Overall this was a fun show and I’m very glad I got to see a couple awesome tour debuts. Tim was everything I ever hoped he would be and Jeff blew my mind as always. It was really fun seeing him dig in and blow and was even more fun watching wander away from the horn section to go jam with the band. After this show I have a whole new respect for Rashawn. He has really stepped it up since LeRoi has been out and seems to enjoy the presence of Jeff. Two kudos and an all you can eat buffet to you Mr. Rashawn Ross!
