Tonight was my first show of the year. I'll be back at Cruzan for tomorrow evening and in Denver for MHMF next weekend. Let me go on the record as saying that tonight was one of the most intense Friday/Night One shows in West Palm in years. Typically, the first night is pretty chill, but tonight was anything but that. Quite frankly, I'm a little nervous about how high-energy tomorrow will be... wait... no I'm not.

Seek Up: Didn't see this as the opener. Tim brings a great tone to the song as does Coffin. This was my 4th time seeing this song and it was definitely the best. Great tone setter.

Proudest Monkey: Honestly, I was a few sheets to the wind when the show started. We ponied up the $20 to tailgate in the parking lot early and I don't remember this song well aside from standard operating procedure. I hope someone else can give a better review of it.

Satellite: The cult classic showed up tonight and was a great third song. So far in the show, I'm thinking classic N1 at West Palm.

Cornbread: Kicked up a notch from last year. It's been played at every show this year, so clearly I knew it would be played tonight. I didn't realize it would be pretty badass this year. Reynolds and Coffin add a whole new element to the tunes on this tour. Accept that as a constant for the remainder of the review.

Sledgehammer: I'm over people complaining about covers... this was awesome. If I were to hear Peter Gabriel play that song right now, I'd think he was doing a mediocre job of covering a DMB classic... honestly.

Stay: I heard it during soundcheck and didn't think we'd hear it tonight. Well, we did. Classic DMB... Tim Reynolds is the most underrated guitar player of our time. Yes, that includes your little brother.

Out of My Hands: Dave's got talent. Guess what... so does the rest of the crew. This chilled things down after Stay, but it was great artistically. Anything the band does live, I'm pretty much a fan of. I'm not as critical as many (regardless of how many shows I've been to). This went from chill to relatively high energy... another ongoing theme of the night.

You Might Die Trying: Tim Reynolds turned this song into a rock n' roll tune begging for some time in a jam band rotation. Does that make sense? It was rocked out hard while being walked along by the band for a good amount of time. I was pleasently surprised at how much this improved. Great work...

Drive In, Drive Out: At 4:15pm, my fiancee and I decided to take a walk towards the amphitheatre for soundcheck. First song we heard was DIDO... full band... once through and sounding great. I was hoping they'd play it tomorrow night because of the amount of friends I have coming down then. Unfortunately the missed out... but the rest of us lost our minds during the return of this epic jam. Again, this was consistent with previous performances, but Reynolds and Coffin amped it up that much more. PS... they played Drive In, Drive Out tonight. Did you get that yet? Jeez... still walking on air.

Sugar Will: 93% of the crowd (roughly... give or take a few) sat for this with confused looks on their faces. I was pumped to hear it, but moreso because of what song it was... it just didn't flow that great with DIDO prior. I would have liked Shotgun or Can't Stop in this position, but they're obviously not close to playing those. I appreciate whatever these guys pull out, so yet again, not a downer by any means.

#41: Have you heard the Lisbon, Portugal recording of this with Morello on the acoustic? Replace his Harvard education with the deliciousness that is Tim Reynolds on electric and you have the best #41 I've heard live. I'm hooked on this whole TR thing... he adds an element that blows me away. No Everday outro like it appeared there would be. But...

Everyday: They took a small break and went right into this one anyway. Pretty standard (if I remember correctly), but the energy was WAY high.

Jimi Thing: Must have been close to 20min long. The band went nuts... Coffin stole the show... I think. Some guy named Tim sounded decent as well.

Grey Street: Standard Operating Procedure. Welcomed surprise. Who doesn't like this song?

>>

Ants Marching: This song doest change much, but with an eager sax player and TR rocking out, it gets pretty intense. I actually spent the majority of this song holding the phone up for my 63 year old mother to hear back in Denver. Every show I get the "call me if they play Ants" text. Sorry for wasting your time on that...

So Damn Lucky: Has this been played in an encore yet? Pretty decent rendition, however a weird spot for it. The boys made it worth it.

Two Step: Best Step I've heard in all of my 18 shows. No, I'm not saying that because it's the last song I heard. Reynolds brings the house down on this. Dave's voice was ridiculously in shape this evening and he slayed every song. Boyd, Carter, Stefan destroyed it at their respective positions. Download the show, listen to it through, and when you get to track #17, PM me so I can say "I told you so".

I know this is one of the more all-around positive reviews of the tour, but I had the time of my life tonight. If you want to be critical, that's fine, but I can't help but enjoy where the music is taking them. Energy this year is high, Coffin is doing a great job filling in and not over-playing, Tim Reynolds is Tim Reynolds, and the lack of Butch is... less devastating that I thought.

Talk amongst yourselves. I'm pumped for Night 2 and maybe some Help Myself or other goodness. Take care and be safe.

You know what, you're exactly right. I'll remember Friday of last year for If I Had It All, Dave's shirt change during it, and the impromptu Simply Red cover jam. Last 45min of this show blew me away as well. So pumped for tonight.
