Did this today, fairly quickly. I believe this was the 2nd or 3rd take of the song ever for me. I played over a Dave and Tim version from the Lost Acoustics. Playing to live D+T is usually somewhat challenging as there isn't perfect time and it's missing key ingredients (namely a bass), and the Stone is a fairly complicated song in its own right. Anyway, there are definitely some spotty areas (rough beginning and some slight time issues during some of the busier parts) in this, but I figured I'd throw it up and see if I could get any constructive feedback.

Mix also isn't perfect...a little bright but keep in mind this is also just drums recorded over a Dave and Tim recording. Thanks.

You seem to be very reliant on a one two three four-trip-let type thing to get back to where you're going after some ideas. Hard to explain, but if you listen, you might pick up on it.

If I'm thinking of the same thing as you, then you're right in that I definitely fall back on that as a means of ending phrases and ideas in this tune. Not something I normally do, but it fits with the structure of the song and my use (and maybe overuse) of it probably comes as a result of not being entirely comfortable with the tune.

I'll try to post some other stuff up on here when time allows. Thanks for the feedback guys. :thumbsup

It's comfort, plain and simple. Once you become more comfortable, you won't rely on the crutches of repetitive rhythms.

Nice snare sound man. Good stuff. Ignore Russian Shrinks, it's meant to be your interpretation of the song, not a clone of the original.

Dunno if you saw it, but here's a Seek Up I did http://www.new.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=509909617536

I'm offering constructive criticism on his playing, which he asked for. I never said it was bad in any shape or form. I did, however, say that he repeated the same rhythmic motif a couple of times, and it seemed as if it was used as a crutch to get back into the groove of the tune.

There's nothing wrong with his interpretation of the song, but it was noticable that there was something sticking out when he inserted this motif.

If he wants to play the same thing over and over, that's fine by me. I am far from being one to say "clone the original or don't play it". I'm just offering advice to help him advance as a player and feel more comfortable playing in an x/8 time signature, which is different than a x/4 signature.

It's something that comes from playing more and more and exploring metric modulation, polyrhythms and removal/addition of beats along with other concepts.

(BTW, I'm a certified music teacher and have a few drumming trophies/awards.)
