The Gorge – Labor Day Weekend
This was a tribute weekend for Leroi Moore. He had recently died and had his funeral service earlier this week. I know everyone was planning on singing songs in tribute for our fallen hero (SOTR, IIOHAB, 3LB.) However, the band had decided they wanted to create an even better tribute than we could have ever created. The #34 tribute with the pictures was spot on. It was very emotional and allowed fans a glimpse into the life of our hero. Who knew he was so athletic in his early years? Who knew he looked like a pimp? I had a great time this weekend partying, meeting new people, and having a great time. My review of the weekend will consist of me making notes or comments next to each song that was played. (Very long and excuse any typo’s…)

August 29, 2008
Gorge Amphitheatre, George, WA
Bartender: Solid opener, but nothing spectacular.
Proudest Monkey: Great song and Dave added some awesome monkey sounds at the end.
Satellite: Not a surprise it was played, but still a fun song.
So Damn Lucky: Very excited to see this live. Amazing song.
You Might Die Trying: Here is a song that could have been replaced by a number of great songs. However, the jam was awesome! Jeff Coffin rocked this jam. I would prefer the band just skip the entire song and just move to the jam.
Old Dirt Hill (AKA ODB): Dave started the song by telling a little story about Roi. He talked about how his laughter was very infectious and he laughed so hard he would fall off his seat. Ahh ODH..How I want to like you, but I always think of 20 other songs that could be in your place….
Cornbread: I really enjoy the carter drum intro. It’s a fun and dirty song. Obviously the lyrics are pretty much crap. It’s like a dirty old man wrote them :devil Dave dance is pretty funny. Dave commented on how the dry air gave him boogers.
Ehhe: I had a feeling this song was coming up. The video of the dancers was pretty cool. Tim rocked this song. I really don’t know if I like this song or not.
Water/Wine Jam: Great song! It has a very nice smooth jam.
Dancing Nancies: Dave started the song with a very religious intro. I’ll have to listen to it again to check out exactly what he said. Boyd and Tim were doing a pretty interesting jam. However, I feel that they train wreaked in the middle of the jam. It was almost like they did not know where to go with it. The end jam was sweet though…
Burning Down the House: Great Cover! However, I think that David Byrne does a much better job on the singing..Sorry Dave…
Lover Lay Down: What a perfect song! It was during this song that I really got a good look at the band. It was obvious that they have been through a lot of pain and heart ache. You could see the lack of sleep in their eyes… Jeff Coffin had a great solo in this song.
Help Myself: I am not a big fan of this song. However, they played it fine. After the end of this song they put up a picture of Leroi. This is when things got completely nuts. The lawn erupted in glow sticks…I don’t mean just a few glow sticks. IT WAS A WAR!! Everyone was chanting Roi, crying, and throwing glow sticks. The band just stood there and soaked it in for a good 5-10 mins. It was very emotional.
41: A perfect song to jump into after the glow stick bonanza. I really enjoyed this song. RR was very emotional during it. He had to walk away a number of times because he was crying. He also tried playing while covering his eyes. Tim’s jam was smoking!! Jeff Coffin also had a pretty great jam. Carter busted into yet another jam near the end of the song.
Crash into Me: Fan favorite and a great song.
Money: Very nice cover. During the song they displayed oil fields and pumping stations. (Very fitting) Jeff Coffin rocked this song. Something tells me Boyd doesn’t like this song. He seemed sad standing there just plucking his violin.
Anyone Seen the Bridge >Too Much Tease > Tripping Billies!!: Love the new ASTB! It rocks! 2001 & Funk 49 was sweet. Something funny happened during this song. There was this guy in front of us who was obviously very drunk. He picked up a glow stick and tried to throw it. It went straight down to his feet…lol. Ok..I’ll admit it. I was hoping for Halloween. However, you really can’t go wrong with a smoking billies. Boyd completely owned this song.
Encore
#34 Roi Pictures: What a great collection of pictures and an amazing song to go along with them. I have a feeling we may never see the band perform #34 again. :(
Gravedigger: Great song. I really like the full band on this.
DDTW: I don’t think DDTW has ever sounded better. Jeff Coffin really put his stamp on this song.

Dreaming Tree: What a great set opener. There are really only a few songs that really deserve to open up a set and this is one of them. They had a very cool flower background showing up on the big screens. Jeff’s flute work was very nice.
OSW: Standard OSW, but there is nothing wrong with that.
Stay or Leave: Sooooo SWEET! This is another song that needs to be in full rotation. I think there are a number of other Dave & friends songs that need the full band treatment.
Two Step: SMOKING!! Tim and Carter completely owned this song.
Song that Jane Likes: Love this song. What is there not to like about this song?
Gray Street: Before the song started Dave commented on how it has been a strange week. Jeff Coffin did a great job on this song.
Louisiana Bayou: Here is another song that has an awesome jam attached to it, but the song blows goats. Ohh why could you not have been: The Stone, Granny, Pig, Spoon, Halloween, Last Stop, Minarets, Recently, BOWA, Typical Situation…..and so forth…
Out of My Hands: Yes…it’s cool that Dave plays the piano. I still don’t like this song. It is another song that has a cool jam at the end, but I would rather just hear the jam.
Sugar Will: SWEET!! I really wanted them to play this. RR jam on this song was very nice. He has really stepped into his own this year.
Jimi Thing: Tim burned this song alive. He was smoking. I really can’t imagine the band going back to touring without him. He really needs to be on every tour from now on….
SledgeHammer: Another great cover this year. Fun song.
Pantala Naga Pampa > Rapunzel: This was pretty standard, but there is nothing wrong with that. Great song.
Stolen Away on 55th and 4rd: Bleh….meh….uggg….RR had a nice jam on this song.
Crush: Another classic song that has never sounded this good. Tim and Jeff have really put their stamp on this song.
So Much To Say: Great fun song.
ASTB > Too Much: This combo has never sounded soooo good. I’ve seen this combo many times, but I think this is the best.
Encore
Sister: I like this song, but I’ve just heard it too many times now. I would like another song placed here. I suppose it could have been worse…Fool To think comes to mind.
Hey Hey My My: Love this cover. The whole crowd was signing it.
Stay: Ohh Stay…why must you do this to me? I really do like you, but I just don’t like seeing you here. Why can’t you stay where you belong? You need to be in the middle of the set.

Seek Up: Another classic song that always deserves to open up a show. They started the song with a blue screen with graphics covering up the band. It was very nice. The Boyd jam was very nice on this song.
When the World Ends: More like…when is this song going to end? I’ve tried to like this song, but I just can’t….RR had a great jam at the end.
What Would You Say: Love this song. What is there not to like about this gem? Jeff and RR had a great jam.
So Damn Lucky: They had already busted this out, but Dave commented that he was playing this for a friend. Dave! I’m your friend!! Play Last Stop! :)
Loving Wings: Dave dedicated this song to his wife Ashley. It’s a fun song.
Cornbread: Hah! I knew I would see you again. Fun quick song, but Dave really needs to work on those lyrics. Plus…the structure is a little strange. It is another song that has a fun jam, but the song needs a lot of work.
#27: This is probably my favorite “new” song. It has the most promise of the newbies. It almost seemed that he added a new verse? (Something about beat down) I’ll have to listen for any changes….
Rhyme and Reason: Another classic gem that has never sounded this good. Thank You TIM!!!
#41: I love this song, but they really didn’t need to shove in a repeat. I suppose it could have been a worse repeat :) Jeff Coffin’s jam was really great.
The Maker: Standard maker.
Where are you going: I am going to the bathroom Dave…..After the song Dave said something about us not getting diarrhea….
Drive in Drive Out: Great to see this song performed. (This is when the show was pushed into high gear)
Lie in our graves: Boyd was on FIRE! Fantastic version.
Warehouse: Very happy to see the boys perform this song. My wife was also very excited. However, she actually missed the salsa jam. This is one song that I think Butch really helped.
All Along the Watchtower: WOOT!!! Tim tore this song up. He even busted out the jimi Hendrix jam. Very nice. A little too short though :(
Encore:
ASTB > Too Much Tease > Ants marching: What a perfect song to open up the encore. ROCKING!!
Thank You: I knew I should have played the set list game this year. Not a surprise, but still a fun song.
