ok, so in my mind, warehouse is played with a downstroke and an upstroke on each string. however, i was listening to uttad today and it sounded like it was just one single pluck on each string with reverb. whats the correct way to play this?

Listening to a live version (specifically D&T) would probably be more helpful then the studio version, IMO

The studio version of warehouse is much different than how he plays it live (or any other time for that matter, at least that I've heard).

In the studio version he picks the individuals strings, with the same pattern you mentioned (down up), but he is just picking the individual string. Not strumming all of them.

Now to master the warehouse, you have to be able to do a full strum with your right hand, while using your left hand to "mute" or control the strings so that you're only playing 1 string, but hitting all 6. That's where Dave gets his choppy, full, Warehouse sound. Now in reality you don't have to hit all 6 strings but you just have to get a full strum in there to get that "attack".

Does that make sense?

I think you're right, the studio version does sound like its played 1/2 time with a delay... I just strum the shit out of it muting strings with my right hand. It should work either way. I actually can't tell how they did it?

It's kind of like Mike's riff on Pearl Jam's cover of Baba O'Rielly... I'm not that proficient at alternate picking, so I use a delay pedal to play that (which is difficult to stay in sync with for more than a few minutes....) but he just picks every note...

meh.

Yeah, the live (not studio) intro is played with an up and downstroke.

Yeah, thats how I have been playing it but it never sounded quite "right". it sounds good, but not dave good. I'll have to keep on trying. I guess its more of a timing thing but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for all the input everyone!

Im pretty sure no one is plucking or hitting a single string. From what I understand basically all of the acoustic you hear on UTTAD is Timmy. Ill have to take another listen but I think thats timmy just strumming but making it sound like its plucking...just timmy being amazing.
