hey everyone -
I live in Des Monies Iowa and happen to go watch a show here that was being put on by one of the radio stations here in town. They brought in Willie Porter who by the way blew my freaking mind with his guitar playing skills. Anyways he put on an awesome show and my question was he was playing with 2 capo's on his guitar for some songs. One of them was a regular one and the other one on the particular song I noticed was about a fret apart and was like a half capo or something, just covering the EAD strings or something. Is anyone know what he was doing or if your familiar with willie porter do you know anything about his style, turning ect..?

It's called a cut capo. My guitar teacher had some custom made and gave me one. It's cool. But I don't know who that guy is ...sorry.

that's cool, I never understood why people really even like to use capos, given theory it does nothing. the only thing a capo does is take away notes from a fretboard. I understand some people like their creative sound though.

I use a capo to get a song into a my singing range.

I guess you loose a few notes but maybe only 2 or 3 usable notes depending on where the capo is played.

Just saw Willie last night for the first time and was particularly impressed w/ his full, brilliant tone and thought-provoking, amusing lyrics. Never had a chance to use a double-capo system like that and had a minute to ask him about it. He actually started out in a drop-C tuning on Paper Airplane and also used a DADGCD w/ the cut-away capo. Wanted to ask him for some tab but settled for a couple CDs.

Not to be a dick, but that really sounds like a music-snob response. Yes, if you know your chords it's not really useful, if that's all you do. But some people (and I admit this is a scary thought) only know about 4 chords and to change the key of a song, must use a capo. That's the extreme end of the spectrum.

The reason I think most people, including myself, use a capo is for the tone you get from your guitar. Need proof? Take Here Comes The Sun. The lick in and of itself is fairly easy, nothing too special. But if Harrison had played the song without a capo, the tone produced from his guitar would have been lower, losing that bright, cheery edge to the tune that makes it such an uplifting tune. Another example would be a number of Simon and Garfunkel songs (Bookends comes to mind).

So capos do serve their rightful purpose. :)
