Alright so I've been playing guitar for a couple years now (acoustic mainly) and have gotten pretty decent. I have an alright voice and have played some small gigs (graduation and frat parties) but I'm getting kind of bored with my playing. I have gotten into a real comfort zone playing mainly songs with open and barre chords. I have tried playing songs with single notes but I'm just not very good at it. Obviously practice is one of the only things that will make me better but I just don't know where to start really. I've written alot of my own songs but without the use of single notes, they are all starting to sound quite similar. What would be some good advice of songs to start with to improve on playing some more difficult songs. I really like what Trey does where he plays rhythm and then also solos in the same song. Ideally, I'd like to be able to do that (obviously not to his extent). Any advice as to where to go from here would be greatly appreciated!

or take some lessons

I've been playing for awhile now, no live performances or anything, but just for my own pleasure(and some friends). My gf got me a month of guitar lessons for Christmas and they have been great to say the least. There were so many holes to fill theory wise and technique wise that all I can do is get better.

I'm not trying to reccomend you stay in the realm of Dave, but since you're obviously a DMB fan, have you mastered Dave's picking songs/techniques?

Mastering these will help develop your picking, strumming and both simultaneously:
Rhyme and Reason
Fool To Think
The Stone
JTR
Drive In Drive Out
...and any songs like these, there are many more. SMTS, WWYS, etc.

Though I do reccomend learning the modes/pentatonics and practicing soloing and improvising, it will help you a lot.

i really need to get myself lessons. i can play pretty much all songs in the dmb library, and every once in a while i can do a small solo by ear, but i really need to get down theory.
