I'd really like to pick up a loop pedal in the next few weeks, was wondering if you guys have any suggestions or anything to look for/avoid when buying one.
I really don't want to spend more than $200, if I have to go used so be it.

thats going to be tough. id go to either a local pawn shop, music store, or something along the lines of guitar center. most pedals are fine used, so if you want to save money, def check out a pawn shop or local music store. daddy's junkie music also has a large selection of new and used guitar gear as well. but you will 100% find the pedal you are looking for guitar center under $200.

i have 2 line 6 DL4 modelers one for my guitar and one for my voice. they have cool delay effects and you can do some pretty neat things with it if you really get into it. i have been using one for the past 6 years and know there are probably 13,000 other things i can do with it but haven't yet. anyhow, that being said they are $250 at guitar center. you also need to buy a power supply for it which is about $15 (unless you don't mind buying D batteries and changing them out ever so often...so really the $15 power supply will save you money in the long run) .i would also suggest getting the warranty on it. that may be about $40...so you're looking at a little over $300.

thanks for the response...that is the pedal I'm leaning towards, as it's one of the few I can go test out in store...but I'm debating whether or not to spendt he extra $50 or so to get a loop 'station' with dual pedals and more control. then again that me be too much for what I plan on doing...

thanks for the response...those line 6 DL4's look pretty cool, they can do a lot, but I should've said in my OP I'm just going to use the pedal for jamming/improving and songwriting...not looking for any effects or anything.

I use the Boss RC-20XL, and it is a dream. You can save up to 11 loops, which can be stopped and started, and erased and saved very easily. You can loop up to 16 minutes, which is really nice for practicing. I can quickly lay down the guitar and bass to "If I Had It All", and bam, I can practice it on drums :lol note the use of "bam" to emphasize how cool this pedal is ha...you can also undo the last layer you've added to the loop you're working on, and than redo it if you want it back. Has separate inputs for an instrument (1/4 inch jack) and a mic (XLR), which is cool if you can sing (unlike me). Marcus Eaton has his guitar running through his, plus a little mic as well, which he uses to add hand-claps and backing vocals to some of his rhythms. The only downfall is it's 259 bucks new, and it doesn't have delay like the DL4. I haven't played the RC-2 either; that looks like the same as the RC-20XL, but single pedal, not double. Seems like the same thing just cheaper :lol

Do it :thumbsup like I said, I've never used the single pedal version, so I guess I might be a little biased :lol you won't be disappointed with the 20XL though.

actually nvm you already said "jamming". ive tried the single pedal and it works great, but kyvek is right the more expensive one is a dream basically and you will prob never need another looper

I just bought a DigiTech JamMan about a month and a half ago, and it's kicking my ass in a good way. $250 online, power supply included. Has separate inputs for vox and instrument (and a separate aux in for an iPod, radio, etc.), so you can plug both in at the same time...just be careful with what you're looping at the moment. :lol Also has a save function where you can save up to 99 loops (and up to six hours on the included 1G card), and has a USB input to dump all that you've saved on your computer or load something off the computer to a specific loop. Some people out there have pre-made loops for different beats and such that you can load up, no problem. Lastly, there's a tempo adjustment button so you can switch tempos/time signatures on the fly from whatever you've looped.
That's what I make use of at the moment, and that isn't half of the total functions. I love it.

So yeah, in short, for a jamming/songwriting combination, the JamMan is perfect. If you have a mic you can plug in, you can basically record a song with soundboard quality, right there, with the dual input function and the USB/saving capabilities. I'm considering buying a good vocal mic just for that purpose.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll definetly go with a station. I'm gonna go try the Boss and Digitech at the local guitar shop. I've never had a problem with Digitech, other than the quality/build of their products is usually pretty cheap/cheesy, whereas Boss are pretty damn solid. But in the end this is about functionality and sound, so we'll see.

I have the same one.... it's solid. it's so easy to use. I use it for my acoustic gigs for loops and tap delays (ping pong is my favourite). then my singer will use it in my rock band, but not for looping, only for digital delays and all that jazz

Not sure if you made the purchase yet, but the RC20XL Loop Station is worth every penny. I think Digitech tries to cram too much in one unit sometimes.

RC-20 XL hands down! It's $259 on Musicians Friend. I use one and I swear by it. Everyone is correct, you will never need another loop pedal!

Yes the $259 is kinda expensive but you can finance if you wish.

The Digitech JamMan is the best looper mentioned in this thread.
Best sound quality
Best Build Quality
Best Functionality/Features.
If you can find one to fit into your budget, get it above the others.

Just a suggestion, if you can afford it, go for the better stuff. You end up buying something that isn't as good as something else, and then still wanting that other device anyway. As long as you aren't going to go broke doing it (like me wanting to buy a Korg Oasys ($8,500)), go for the added utility.

honestly the boss will prob be one of the best you could ever use. aside from everyone else's recommendations i would DEF go to a store and demo a few of these. you might even discover the boss doesnt suit you, or just confirm that it's perfect for your needs

Seriously...give it a shot.

Hey everyone, I went to check out both the Boss and Digitech at my local shop, and I didn't even end up trying them out. The Digitech won hands down for me, just upon visual inspection and build.
I've always found Boss to be made like a rock, and Digitech to be kind of cheap plastic and flashy, trying to do too much for the price. (i.e. $50 effects pedal with 200 effects)
But the Digitech Jamman is a beast, and it's got a great setup. USB, Aux, Mic, and Guitar lines, just awesome.
So thanks to everyone for the reccomendations. This has really got me back into soloing/improving and has also helped tremendously in writing my own music, as you can have a clip instantly played back for you and hear it yourself. awesome!

:thumbsup Good choice in my opinion. If you don't have it already, get some software on your computer and a decent mic, and you basically have a home studio right there in the JamMan. Also, take advantage of pre-made loops and beats and things that people have available online.
Question...did you get the loop selector switch that's optional with the JamMan? It's useful for changing loops live without having to bend over and twist the button. I haven't gotten it yet, as that's not a feature I have a need for right now.

No I didn't, in fact I didn't know about it until I got home and was flippin' through the manual. I wondered about that, as you'd have to have a way to cycle through them when playing live or something.
But yeah, same here, no use for it as of now, but it would be nice in the future.

i have a DL4 and used to have a roommate who owned one, so i'd get to use both, which was fun -- being that you can't use the delay models and the looper at the same time unless you have 2 of em. I've enjoyed mine for a good 4-5 years now tho it's been having problems for the last year or so. I've had to repair it multiple times and it will work fine for a few months before the crapping out again.
I've thought about buying their new JM4 looper, but I really have my heart set on the M13 Stompbox modeler -- that thing looks so tasty.

The loop selector switch really will set the Digitech one apart from the competition at this level.
I didn't like the one they offer (spacing too close together, so I made my own).
Switching between loops on the fly is great for jamming and playing songs.
Get one eventually, you will be glad you did.
FYI, There are a few different options out there that will work if you do a little research.
