How AWESOME is that beat displacement at the very end of the clip? They're changing that last measure to 5/4 it sounds like, and than back to 4. Good grief I love Carter...seems like he throws everything he has at this, too. Note the syncopated hihat patterns, and sweeet double bass fill in the beginning. Much busier than we've seen from him lately :thumbsup

As much as it's a nice clip, I wouldn't call that beat displacement awesome with capitals. Is it cool? Yup, but nothing too "crazy". I can't comment on the HH patterns, because the video is only so good. The BD work is very similar to his work in Rhyme and Reason, which was pretty much a single BD thing.

Lol my bad for being excited and optimistic; thanks jackass. Get off your pedestal...you can hear the hi hat just fine in the video, too; you can "comment."

i'm tired of the negativity in the threads too man. this video definitely excited me and gave me lots of hope. i'm right there with you. just because other assholes don't like it doesn't mean they need to personally attack people who do.

two thumbs up.

Listen man, I'm just as excited as you are to hear Carter play something that sounds like the most interesting drum work since Busted Stuff. I'm just being a realist here in terms of what's going on. 4/4 groove with a dropped in bar of 5/4? Could be very cool and what he's doing does sound cool, but it's not anything "mindblowing" - he's just following the subdivision.

As for the HH work, I just can pick out the syncopated accents, I want to know if there's more going on there with the HH work. You think something with quality like that is going to give us a true representation of what's going on there? Nopers, especially when we know Carter typically does a ton of stuff with grace notes/ghost notes/unaccented notes. So can we hear some syncopated HH work? Yup, but there's the possibility of even more going on that we can't hear because it's a mediocre (at best) recording.

I dig what's going on in that clip. Carter is actually playing some stuff... some notes. I'm excited too. I'm just sharing my knowledge of Carter as it relates to this new clip. In other words - the only negativity you've perceived in any of my postings came from your brain... not my words. Ask anyone here... MDrums and a few others would attest that I try to be pretty knowledgeable and share that with the community. I've studied a number of drummers and a great deal in the whole percussive world. Call it a pedestal, but I'm just trying to share my knowledge based on my years of studying the instrument and Carter.

So be cool man.

a bit of an overreaction. his drums do sound pretty cool, but you can only discern so much of what's going on in this video because of the quality. relax, man.

I'm with Rushian. There is nothing crazy or mindblowing about Carter's playing in that clip. I just think people are flipping because it's been a long time since we've heard Carter do that in a studio setting when he should have been doing it all along.

yeah it's a good sounding clip. but i dunno i'm not hearing the 5/4. I hear carter doing a delay that goes with dave's singing there at the end but the vocals, violin, and electric guitar indicate no time signature change.....i think it's just carter doin his thing messin around with what he does with beat 1. just kinda how i hear it. and i totally agree bout the hi-hat some nice stuff goin on there as well! sounds good!

sounds pretty cool but cant gather much from a 20 sec recording....and im pretty sure the last full bar of the recording is in 5/4

The 5/4is at the end of the clip and is featured in the vocals, drums and violin. It's there.

There is a measure of 5/4 at the end of it. Count it off. It is there.

the song's in G

That was the first thing that I heard. The vocal harmonies reminded me of Old Dirt Hill too. It seems that Dave has been writing a lot in G in recent years. I'm wondering if it's now easier for him to sing in G as opposed to D. In any event, I have no real opinion about the clip other than it's good to hear 20 seconds of something new.

Oh yes, and the drum beat was cool too.:)

Yeah, at first listen I thought it was 4/4 with strange accents, but it's def in 5 for a measure. Extremely cool :thumbsup
