I know a lot of people on these boards don't like john mayer for various reasons

but i don't think anyone can say it's because he isn't a good guitar player

Haha I see where alot of people come from when saying that but I'm still going to defend him. Mayer is stud guitar player, which has been said, and I think he will continue to go away from the poppy sound as he gets older. I think he will stay more mainstream but shy away from the more pop sound and get more bluesy. Lets face it, No one is going to want to see a 40 year old dude writing songs for 15 year old girls. Continuum was a kick ass album the trio rules. Steve Jordan is the nuts.

In the long run, I think Mayer will become one of the most recognized and respected guitar players of all time. The guy is only like 30 years old.

1) He is a very good guitar player

2) If you were a musician, and someone came to you and offered you a couple of million dollars to sell out for a bit and play some corny songs for the radio - would you do it?
If you said no, I'll even throw in that you get to bang Jessica Simpson (pre-weight-gain)

I HATED John Mayer. I couldn't stand his stupid songs on the radio. A couple of my friends told me to give him another chance now that he is getting over his "pop" status.

I'm willing to bet there will be great things from him in the future. Get beyond the "pop icon" crap and his guitar playing will keep him on the map.

+1 I agree with everything here, and I never really liked Mayer either. Somehow though, he's growing on me.

...wait, I think that Jessica looks better with more butt. :D

he is a douche bag is real life though. ive heard this from multiple people who have met him. however he is a VERY good guitar player. he can really really play with soul and feel, and he also has great lead tone as well. on slow dancing in a burning room he fuckin rips

not to mention, he railed jennifer aniston too.

I definitely think it is possible for him to be a douche bag as well as many entertainers and people in show business. I don't know what Mayer is really like, but the JM Show was kickass and funny as hell, and he may really be a douche. But I think people can come off as Douche bags after all the people and shit they have to put up with and those couple stories get out and give someone a bad rap.

I have read your posts in the music forum before, and remember you talking about some of Mayer's new stuff. Could you point me in a good starting direction for playing his stuff?

I have pretty much went through most of the DMB catalog, and after reading this thread started playing Who did you think I was, and really enjoyed that. I would like to get into more of his stuff but don't know much of his music.

I play mostly acoustic, but have a strat that I put through a workout every few days too.

TIA

Billy

p.s. for the record, I try not to pay much attention to attitudes of musicians, I let thier music speak, and John Mayer can play the hell out of the guitar

John, by far. Dave is more unique and, I guess, innovative with his style...but everything Dave plays, John could play easily. I can't say the same thing the other way around.

I've met him once and he was rather pleasant.

I definitely think some celebs can be douche's but I also think a lot get a bad rap. Everyone has their bad days or times when they aren't the nicest, and when they're normal it's chalked up to just that. However if they are a celebrity and don't feel well for whatever reason automatically they are labeled as arrogant or a dickhead. I don't think this is necessarily the case for a lot of them. Maybe they're divas when they are working, but I find it hard to believe, based on my run ins with famous folk that most of them are douche's and simply so because of their fame.

No offense to Dave (he's my favorite guitar player, but obviously not even close to one of the best), but him trying to cover Neon would be a disaster.

you know, i dont care too much for playing other musicians music so im not that familiar with Johns Stuff music wise outside a few songs (like DMB, dont even ask me how to play anything off of BTCS and on, :D)

basically if you want to play acoustic John.

Just learn the whole Inside Wants Out EP, Love Soon is a creat acoustic song. if you have proficency at guitar, Neon is the shit. still one of my favorite songs by him.

Then add St. Patrics Day (my all time JM favorite song) and Why Georgia

pretty much after that he picked up his Electric Guitar and didnt look back.

well like the people that met him didnt say he was a douche to them, but it was more like he came off as extremely cocky and arrogant, and that he seemed like a douche to others around him. but i guess i can see where youre coming from. only if john himself was in on this conversation would we know what he's truly like lol

ah gotcha. i can see how that description would come forth. from the interviews i've read and seen i imagine it would not be much of a stretch to gain this perspective.

he might be a douche but he fucking rocks the guitar. and makes great music. that i happily listen to.

some of his pop stuff isn't the greatest but he has a lot of great material.
if you ever watch the live dvd release of where the light is, it really contrasts his different styles and has some great footage in general.

For anyone that hasn't checked it out, Johnmayer.com redirects now to his new studio/album work. He's updated it with pictures, videos, how he's approaching this record and so on. Awesome stuff. Looks like Steve Jordan is back around and he's starting from scratch again. Can't wait. He's also on Twitter and has some pretty funny comments on a regular basis.

And I'm not going to argue with those that don't like him or think he just rips off older music or is still playing pop music. I sincerely think if he stays alive he'll be regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in many, many, many years.

And lastly, his 'Where the Light Is' is one of the best live dvd's I own. The diversity from acoustic to the Trio to the full band is absolutely incredible. Highly recommended ~

after just watching most of the LA DVD, he is a little into himself. He gets off on the paparazzi and al the fans screaming "I LOVE YOU." He also loves saying his name a lot which to me is a little egotistical. But besides that, he plays with passion and the music is great. Its fun to listen to and watch. Especially the trio. Watching the other two are great. And Jordan is a great great drummer.
