I presume most of you also check out nancies.org as well as ants and they just posted a cover CD called "Under the Covers and Dreaming" which was all covers made up by people in the Musician discussion area of the nancies boards. What do you think about people from the Ants boards making a similar CD... maybe a "Before These Covered Streets" or something to keep the same name scheme, lol. I can do the cover art and I was thinking about playing either #41, crash, or watchtower on it. My friend wants to do Rhyme and Reason. So if I can get another 10 people or so who are interested to email me at DMBand520@aol.com or just start posting up here about it maybe we can get something together. I 'd like to avoid repeating any of the 12 songs nancies used though. There CD was...

01. Don't drink the water by madness 6:01
02. #40 by ranting thespian 2:43
03. Last stop by carterbeauford 5:19
04. Where are you going by furthermore 4:03
05. You never know by martin dm3md 6:16
06. Don't burn the pig by red forty 6:26
07. Grace is gone by gocdmb 5:00
08. Christmas Song by kevinlewis41 5:01
09. Weight of the world by dmbalex 4:39
10. Angel from Montgomery by rapunzel79 4:19
11. Pantala naga pampa -> Rapunzel by selftitled 6:26
12. Say goodbye by bak2me 5:32

Anyway, I thought it'd be cool if we could make something like this. So if you're interested DL what they did and listen to it and get back to me.

i like the idea. although i'm not a great musician, i think i might be able to give something.

we just got recording equipment at our school. our instructor plays sax, we have an awesome drummer, and guitarist. plus we could find a good bassist. I could take up butch's position on the key's. i dunno, i'll think about it and talk to people. maybe we could just do an instrumental.

well you don't have to do anything great. if you listened to the nancies CD it was good but it wasn't anything amazing so if you can just make an effort it'll be good enough. I'll just be doing a solo acoustic song and recording by plugging my guitar into the computer and then recording vocals back over it. Anyone that can play guitar and has a computer can do it. Anyone know of some songs they can play they might want to contribute?

I can a few tunes acoustic like ants, crush, typical situation, lie in our graves, two step and some other tunes. If you could let me know when you want to do this that would cool. Keep us posted on it and I could probably put something together for you. Sounds cool man.

I'm looking to do this now. It sounds like I already have either 4 or 5 people intersted in doign something. Why doesn't everyone start picking out what song they are actually going to record so i can make a list. Just get everything recorded and get it to me ASAP. I'm gonna record my song over the next week.

naming it like nancies did wouldn't be cool though, cause they're coming out with other volumes too. so we should come up with our own way of naming it.

ok, well then give me some ideas opn what to call it. Before These Covered Streets was just the first thing that came to mind. How about the "The Best Of What's Around: A Fan Tribute To Dave Matthews Band" or something like that. Throw out some more ideas.

Hey folks, I'm one of the organizers of the nancies CD. Glad to see y'all take the initiative to do the same - the more the merrier! I just want to share my experience with y'all so that you don't suffer from the same things:

1. Whoever organizes MUST be committed and willing to do a LOT of work. You wouldn't think it'd take much, but believe me, it does. Pick someone who won't be on vacation/working/going to school too much to dedicate the time. And you must have adequate CD-burning and sound editing capabilties (i.e Acid, CoolEdit, ProTools, etc). Plus, a knowledge of B+P is very importatnt.

2. Don't limit yourselves to 1 submission per song. We had over 40 people sign-up and only 12 songs were sent in. If multiple submissions do make it in, then just simply pick the best one. Notify the other artist that either they should submit something else or wait for another volume.

3. Encourage people not to try to sound EXACTLY like DMB. Everyone knows these songs and it shouldn't be a "best cover band contest". Add to the songs, rearrange them, be creative.

4. Set a time frame for submissions and the CD release and stick to it. We had the first 2 organizers drop out in the middle of the project and that caused mass confusion.

5. I think your "Best of What's Around" title is awesome!!! However, that has the connotation of some really high-quality stuff. If you stick with that title it might be best if you looked for submissions other than someone who's plugging a guitar directly into the PC and then throw some vocals on top. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but.......

6. Plan for artwork ahead of time.

Anyway, that's it IMHO. Take it for what it's worth. Please feel free to check ours out if you haven't already:

www.kevinlewis.net/undercover.html

Can't wait to hear this one!!!
Peace,
Kevin

Thanks for the advice. I won't have a problem putting everything together. I have experience using editing and recording software and I have a lot of free time this semester coming up and hopefully we can get most of this done before the summer is over. I don't know if this is being to ambituous but how does August 31st sound as the final deadline for submissions. I figure this gives everyone over a month to get it in, which should be plenty of time. I'm not going to worry about making a list of who should do what song. I like the idea Kevin suggested. Just send in whatever you can do. If you want to do more than one song then send in more than one song. If you can't decide between two different takes you took then send them both in. Once I've listened to everything and gotten a few other people's opinions I'll sort through it and compile it all and release it. Maybe The Best of What's Around is sort of an ambitious title but hopefully we'll get some good submissions. Also I think a good example of how to do a cover of Dave well but not sound exactly like him is something like some of the Dave covers Howie Day has done. Granted he is very talented IMO but that gives you an idea how you can throw a twist on a song. Especially listen to something like Howie's So Much To Say or Watchtower/Halloween. You can DL them on any file sharing program. Ok, so if this sounds good to anyone start getting stuff to me ASAP and the deadline will be August 31st. You've got 43 days and counting...

If your guitar has a pickup, just go get a cable and an adaptor to run it into your sound card. Just go into radio shack and tell them what your wanting to do. It's a common question and they'll be able to show you the right parts.

I could do an instrumental BYAH. It would be pretty short (40 Seconds), but you should hear how I play it. Much less boring than the teases Dave did. I'd also love to do Raven, Warehouse.

Yeah this is awesome, I can do a ton of his songs, I have arranged the majority of them in solo acoustic format, I also have my own home studio, so let me know when you want songs in, I can do a couple and send them to you. Just a couple questions:

1. How do you want the files, *.wav?
2. Do you want the songs on CD or emailed to you?
3. When do you want the songs by?

Ok here's an update. Like I said before the deadline is August 31st. Please don't wait til the last minute if you can help it though. Send the songs to DMBand520@aol.com. I can only accept attachments upto maybe 16MB or so b/c of AOL so use MP3 format for now. Hang on to the WAV files though b/c later I'll either set up an FTP or have you mail me a CD with it burned on there. I'm glad to see there is so much interest in this. I think we'll have a really cool CD when we're done. Also try to be creative with song selections. Hopefully I'll get a lot of submissions and will have a tough time picking out the final ones that will make it on the CD. You have to realize that certain songs will have a lot of competition though. It's cool if you want to do #41. I love that song and I was thinking about doing it at first but if i have 10 people send me #41 I can only pick one of them. Raven would definitely be cool. I love that song. Maybe even mess around with some of the summer 200 lyrics? just a thought. I think someone suggested Build You a House. It'd be cool but you'd have to jam on it some or make up some extra lyrics to give it some length. I've been thinking about doing Blue Water into Minarets. Also I'd REALLY REALLY like to hear some one do a good version of Gravedigger. I love that song and if any one wants an MP3 to work off of if they haven't heard it email me and I'll send it to you. I've started to see tabs pop up for it recently. Also it'd be cool to hear some old stuff like Recently, Nancies, Typical Situation. Anyway I wanna hear what you can do so start sending me stuff ASAP!

i can do 41, tripping billies, and maybe get my friend (we do kinda a dave/tim deal) with me on this stuff. id love to do #40--> raven, crush, pfwyg, one sweet world, typical situation, where are you going, grace is gone, nancies. just tell me which u would want and ill get to recording it. im going on vacation for like three weeks on monday tho (after hershey and wont be back until august 9 i think) so i probably cant have them until then... but please dont shaft me because of this. if u can tell me before monday which song(s) to do, then atleast i have an idea. i just dont want to not get picked because i was late in submitting... this is a great idea tho. thanks

Cyrus Jones, 1810 to 1913
He made his great grandchildren believe
He could live to one hundred and three
A hundred and three is forever
When you're just a little kid
So Cyrus Jones lived forever

Gravedigger, when you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Muriel Stonewall, 1903 to 1954
She lost both of her babies in the second great war
You should never have to watch
Your own children lowered in the ground
I mean you should
Never have to bury your babies

Gravedigger, when you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Ring around the rosie
Pocket full of posies
Ashes to ashes
We all fall down

Gravedigger, when you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Little Mikey Carson, 67 to 75
He rode his bike like the devil
Until the day he died
When he grows up he wants to be
Mister Vertigo on the flying trapeez
Oh, 1940 to 1992

Gravedigger, when you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain, I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Gravedigger, when you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
