Welcome to the Best Pull Opinion/Feedback/Source File Thread

This thread can be used to post comments about recordings and to get info on which recording is (in manys minds) the best and source file info. Also use this thread to find out when a recording has become available. So use this thread to your advantage. Get other opinions, list your opinions, and just keep track on the current recordings being spread.

Listed below is each of the played tour dates with taper info. Next to one of the pulls will be information regarding which is the best pull at this moment. If you click the tapers name the source file for that recording will come up for you to view.

If you happen to have a pull not listed here please at least send me the source file so that i can host it for others to view. My AIM screen name is JoeMal1121 and my email is Joe@antsmarching.org.

NOTE: It is very important that the tapers want you to know that this is nothing offical. Everyones opinions will differ. While I base all opinions on a computer and home stereo test of clarity, range, balance, vocals, crowd noise, and many other things these are still accurate notations. If you have any questions be sure to ask.

These are based on opinions and feedback. Every one of these recordings are good and each taper puts the same amount of work into them. We aren't saying anything bad about anyones work. We just like to pick one. But if you can download them all and listen for yourself that's what I would recommend.

I did see a Chrostowski 7-5 (and 7-6) on Furthur. Didn't download it though, got Vernal's from an FTP instead. It looks like both taped from the same location... I'm thinking the same pole, with different mics?

Fulton's 7-8, Willoughby's 7-9 and 7-11, and Brown's 7-16(only one i've heard, but there is no way there will be better)

just my opinion

I used Craig's gear for Charlotte, it's me as the taper. I also have two sources from Nashville (at853's and km184) and I have a source from 7-6.

yes. tapers tape the shows, convert them to shn files and then spread them. you can download the shn files from the servers or from the http download page.

you can listen to the shn's using winamp and a shn plugin and you can also convert the shn's to wav files and burn them as an audio cd.

there has to be a FAQ.

hey all... i never really post here... but someone sent me the link to this thread...

i can't thank you all enough for the kind words about my 7/20 tape... i actually catch shows quite often, but i try to only release the recordings i believe will be my best... (see my 4/5/02 tape)...

if there are servers out there that would like to get this, i have 4 ways to spread it at the moment... my server, which is pretty damn busy... i can upload it to you if you serve... also... i have two other BIG boys who are serving this up for me and gave me semi-public logins to share... but i only will give those to other servers...

the whole idea is to spread the love :D (the recording, i mean) ...

Hey guys, I just finished downloading Fulton's pull of the Charlotte show. I haven't listened to the whole thing--currently on the third song--but, comparing the first three tracks with the pull we have up on the http server, the Fulton recording is far superior, in my opinion. Anyone else heard Fulton's, and can back me up? Just thought I'd let you know!

Where do new shows get seeded? I'm serverving shows for about 120 people plus, I'm uploading to Usenet because a lot of people are able to download help seed the shows. While I don't have a FTP server, I am running DC++ and serverving as much as an FTP serve. I'd love to be able to get these out there more. Help make it easier for people who don't have such good access.

We have the downloading section here. If you feel like uploading to one of our ftp servers - we then load them to our download section. Shoot me an email if you feel like discussing this further.

With the obvious exception of the 7.26 webcast, which recordings did you think were the overall best from summer 2002? For instance, "brown's 7.16.02" or something like that. If you could name like top 3 or something, that would be very convenient. Thanks to all of you for your good work on this thread.

threads like this are dumb because:

a. it's entirely too subjective. just because 2 people like one source better doesn't mean everyone will.
b. you dont' even know what sources you're missing, therefore you aren't even including what are possibly incredible sources for many shows

the 4011 and 4022 sources for charlotte, raleigh, atlanta, nashville rock, george and mark do great work

i agree. everyone has there own taste as to how they want/like things to sound like. more volume, more bass, etc.

i do however think recommending what the majority thinks is the best source is a good idea.

personally from 2002 i like the dpa's & km140's :bounce

yes george wang has pulled amazing shows BUT he doesn't want them spread so i haven't posted anything about them in hopes they don't just like the tapers wishes... i happen to have his pull and i think it is better then fultons... but i can't recommend it or host the source file if the taper doesn't want it spread

Joe M.
07-30-2002, 03:44 PM
a) I don't do it subjectively... I listen on computer and audio equipment for the best sound... I don't even look at the mic's or tapers while I do this so I have no idea whose they are. I base what is better on sounds range, clarity of the lyrics, crowd interference, and many other things... what I do NOT base on is personal preferences like less bass or precision vocals... I base on the overall recording...

b) I happen to know I don't have some sources up there... but this thread is targeted to "todays" down loaders... when someone wants to download a show Mr. Brown... they don't have access to the underground ring of personal tapers servers or what have you... they mainly only have access to VERY GENEROUS servers like AM.orgs... now... I have all the source files listed of pulls that are available to these people... and then a recommendation of (out of what's available to them) what is the better... so the basic thing is... I can't include sources that aren't available...

it just so happens that George Wang is very serious about his stuff not being spread... I happen to have his work but am following the tapers request and not supplying the source file or the recording to anyone... (even though I have sent out emails to Mr. Wang about his better recording in hopes to persuade him)... and again... this goes to what's available...

in all... Mr. Brown.. I respect your work so very much... and please do not get offended by any of this or this thread... it is just a helper for people that are d/ling shows... people that don't have the time to download everyone recording and see for themselves... if you would like to help us out it would be greatly appreciated... you could either give us some suggestions on what I could do to make this please you more... or maybe even help us spread this shows you talk about that aren't available... why not upload to my server or let me download from you so that we can get these good recordings your talking about spread.. or maybe allow one of us to have access to all your taper ring knowledge... again.. sorry.... this isn't meant as an overall judicial judgment... its just used for a help for others... its completely fair... and I haven't been basing as much off of others opinions as much as me sitting down and listening to them... I think its very fair and that there is nothing wrong with it... thank you for your time Mr. Brown.

(I am on another computer so I apologize for spelling and grammar errors I had to type this up fast, when I return I will be sure to clear up any mistakes)

I didn't get a chance to hear the webcast (I was out of town) so I was unaware of the compression. 64 kbps is definitely low.

Anyway, I would bet that someday we'll see some original .shns taken from the webcast master DAT. That would kick ass :D

someone made over $7000 selling george's shows on ebay, and that's only what we caught the kid doing, it very well may be more than 7grand..closer to 15. so george is careful about who gets his shit now. i'll ask him about the dmb (i have them and they are nice). what are also nice are mark lynn's tapes form the southern shows. his stuff will spread, hell i'll probably upload them this sunday places when my cable is installed. they'll kick the shit out some other sources....

I've been on 56k for the past 2 months

>>nd I haven't been basing as much off of others opinions as much as me sitting down and listening to them... I think its very fair and that there is nothing wrong with it...<<

I didn't say it wasn't fair, just what YOU think is different form what joe thinks, which is different from mary, etc. it's all subjective. and i happen to disagree with some of your choices too, which made me post. i wasn't saying 'you suck" but rather "this isn't the best way of going about things"

>>o and on a side note... it kinda hurts when you say this is dumb... i have put a lot of hard work into this... and i know you would feel the same if i said your work was dumb... <<

I never said you didn't put time into it, just that I think it's time that could be better spent doing other things. what you will like best is different from what others will like best. nothing against you, or anyone else, it's just all too subjective. let people decide what they want. if you only host a few sources, that's fine, but telling someone that they shouldn't look towards others if they find them because you're hosting the "best" is what i called "dumb"

Joe M.
07-30-2002, 09:22 PM
so do you have any suggestions on what would be a good way to suggest a specific show out of a date for people who can't download each source to listen to.. or are your thoughts pretty much, everyone for themselves.... do you have suggestions? i am totally open.... how did you all deside who had the best "tape" back when you all traded first then compared to see whose would be the one to spead?... im sure there can be a standard of rating a recording don't you? or are you saying there never is a best recording?

<<

no no, i'm just saying that telling people "i like these" is a lot different from saying "this is the best don't get anything else," becasue then they may never find what could be better sources 9to them, and maybe even to your ears). does that make any sense? you're hosting what you like best, that's cool, and what people should do. i'm just saying that telling people "thiese are the best don't get anything else" and "these are what i like, though there are others available" is different. i'm not sure if i'm explaining my thoughts correctly....

you know, this is exactly the sort of thing i expect from you. why do you have to try to be an asshole?

if you read his opinions, you'll actually see that he thinks mine *are* the best for a majority. so if you're theory were correct, it wouldn't matter (and i wouldn't have posted), since right now he does think mine are the best for the most part. i'm saying check out other sources and see for yourself. mark lynn's 7-13 is absolutely incredible, according to louie rendek who converted and SHNed it recently. let's check that out. i'm interested in hearing the hartford tapes of chris maler and especially jeff travitz's center night 2 hartford, the spac tapes of eric naylor, carl beck, and terry sullivan...etc

wow i'm sorry but this needs to be said. this is getting way out of hand. aren't we supposed to be about spreading the music, not bickering and argueing about it.

everyone has made good points, but come on guys thats enough.

some sources get released to the public sooner. we are getting very spoiled because a source comes out in the next day or 2 and during that time since its the only source in public its 'the best' ...

and again everyone has there own opinions as to what kind of sound they like.

Just want to say that I think this is a great idea. I am only on a 56k connection so it is basically impossible to hear each souce from a show to deceide which is the best to my ears. I have unfortuately wasted my time trading for shows where the source is not so good. I think something like this where suggestions are made as to which sources have the better sound quality is a great idea, and especially helpfull for us unfortunate 56k users. I do agree, however, that these should only be looked at as suggestions because everyone's personal tastes vary. It is also unfair to the other tapers whose sources aren't deemed "the best", who put in a lot of time and effort to record the most amazing band in the world and then spread it to the masses free of charge. So thanks, and and especially to the tapers...you guys rock.

Some are on the HTTP AM.org Downloads section (www.antsmarching.org -> Music -> Downloads)

Most of them if not all can be found on the AM.org FTP's

I recommend you read the FAQ's at the top of this forum to understand how everything works

scott berner taped the schoeps mk4 shows where there isn't a name in the txt file, he never puts his name in there. I personally like the mk4 tape for 7.21 over the geffell tape and others that i've heard.

Also for 8.3 there is an akg ck61 tape

8.5 dpa 4015

Yes we all know this. BUT! George does not want his recordings spread. So in the tapers wishes I am not hosting his source file.

I have tried to communicate to him many times as well as JWolf but he refuses to answer our emails and IM's. We get ignored. Sorry.

ahh ok i think i know what the problem was. 2 step2dmb's post is at the bottom of the page and your post is at the top of page 5 for me (i have my preferences changed a little). So i assumed 2step2dmb's post was the most recent post and didn't know it was just the bottom of the page. again, my bad. peace

Ok, don't try to make george out as a "bad guy" here

he just found out someone's made over $7,000 selling shows he recorded. He's allowed to not want to spread stuff for a bit...

regardless, he's allowed to do whatever he wants

O no. I don't want to make him seem like a bad guy cause hes not. I will say that. (Don't take this next sentence the wrong way). But to the emails and IM's of me and others couldn't he have just have read what I had to say and respond with a No or I don't want them spread. That would be fine and I would follow those wishes just as I am following them now.

George Wang is a great guy (haven't meet him though) but from other tapers I have meet and just for what he does from the trading community. Sucks that someone messed with his stuff.

(This post is intended to show that my orginal comment wasn't meant in a rude way. I was just telling the truth not trying to make anyone look bad.)

Joe M.
08-22-2002, 08:58 PM
Now everyone thinks I'm a bad guy. I am trying to help. I just get PM's, IM's and emails from people wondering why I refuse to host Wang's source file when its such a good show. I agree. But I am following the tapers wishes and so should you (the person asking) by not spreading it. Im really just trying to help everyone. Im not some gready person trying to get everything cause I deserve it. All I want to do is help people out and make everyone happy. (Not so easy)

Out of Haag, Willoughby and Ice for 8/10 I would definately choose Ice. Both Ice and HAag seem the same at a low volume but Ice's seems fuller and at a high volume, Haag seems more empty.

Welcome to AM.org!

Couple things.

First read over the Two Week Rule (all should read)

And then second go to the Trading forum and read the Tips and Help so you know what will be expeceted from you in 2 weeks if you hope to get the show. Just watch the trading forum for a B&P offer for the shows you would like.

ya, rock solid. i really like it. it's up there with Bastable's 7/20 imo - the sound quality of Naylor's 7/21 is a bit lower during the quiet parts, but it is less distorted (listen to R&R on both recordings, for example)

ok... I would definitly go with Ice for 8-27

while shambros sounds really clear and good his levels are to high it appears or something cause in the loud parts there is a buzz/fuzz/noise whatever you want to call it... quieter parts it does sound good though.. but I can't take the buzz.

yea... i just found a skip in shambros recording on d1t8 at like 1:09... so yea...

and i just listened to lesiaks recording of 8-29 and i must say the vocals sound bad... i don't want to say its bad I'm just saying that the vocals get real scratchy

EDIT: I mistakenly put 7-29 instead of 8-29 in this post earlier. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
