hey, do any of y'all have a halfway decent tab for the epic "you never know"? i had one dude telling me to capo 2nd fret, but, i mean, has he ever actually seen dave play with a capo? surely he's wrong! dave normally always shys away from tricks like that.

well if he has a capo on the second fret then the guitar is just tuned a whole step up. Dave would just have his people in the back tune his guitar up and bring it out to him b/c you'll get a little bit better sound tuning it up than using a capo. But either way I'm sure there's a tab out there in standard tuning that will work too.

No, there isn't. Dave doesn't play the song in standard tuning. The theory was the song was written on a Baritone and Dave strung things very funny on one of his 914ce's.

I've heard the theory but I've seen tabs that look decent on standard tuning. Plus even if Dave plays it in Baritone tuning you can figure out the notes and then figure a way to play it on standard tuning.

OK. Note the tuning. I don’t want to take any credit for
“discovering” it; that “honor” belongs to Dave Koon and

Just put a capo on the seventh fret if you want to get close
without worrying about re-stringing your guitar. The tuning will
be similar, except the high “b” string will sound an octave higher
than Dave’s You Never Know tuning. (And note that to play it
with the capo, you’ll hit notes on the 17th fret!)

If you are daring enough to restring, it puts a lot of tension on
the neck. I would suggest that you tune to something like
"aecgda" and use a capo on the second fret to get the correct
pitch. It also makes it easier to play.

The fingerings were taken from the 5-12-02 You Never Know video.

I, for one, will not twist my guitar (with the exception of drop D) for anyone. Now if I could afford more than one nice guitar, it would be a different story. I'm sure this song can be transcribed into normal tuning and sound good. :)

Ok, tuning up a 5th acutally does work. I went out and got the strings they recommended a the bridge (ej15) and slapped them on my takimine G series.... It sounds correct. If you don't have two guitars though, fuck playing this song

Anyway, here's the bit that finally made sense to me from the bridge:

"Dave has tuned one of his acoustic guitars UP a 5th (to B), just like his baritone (1-b 2-f# 3-d 4-a 5-e 6-b) but an octive higher--like putting a capo on the 12th fret of a bari. To achive this, you'll want to get a set of extra-light acoustic strings (EJ-15s from D'Addario are what Iused), as well as an addition 2nd string (what would normally be the "b" on a standard tuned guitar. Then, string the guitar like this: Put the 5th string from the pack
where the 6th string should be, the 4th string in place of the 5th, the 3rd in place of the 4th, and so on, until there's no string for the 1st, but then comes the additional 2nd string...put it in place of the 1st string. THEN, you tune the 6th-2nd stings UP a whole step higher than they would be in a normal situation, if they were in the right place. So, instead of the usual, standard 440 A that the 5th string would be (which is now the 6th string), you tune it UP to a B. Do the rest of the strings like this (6-b 5-e 4-a 3-d
2-f#) and then tune the "additional 2nd string" to it's usual tension--a B. You end up with the You Never Know tuning(1-b 2-f# 3-d 4-a 5-e 6-b)---at least as far as I can tell. I've been over and over this, watching footage of him playing the song, seeing every single section with his fingers plain as day. If Monk reads this and I'm wrong, do let me know. Hope this helps..."

Why miss out on playing this incredible song? Slap a capo on
that guitar and get strumming ...

This deal with capo'ing the guitar is absolutely rediculous! There is no way Dave would use a capo. I have almost completed a standard tab for this song and I should have it out in a couple days. I just have to perfect the chorus and its done. My tab plays along with the cd quite well and other people seem to think I've nailed it. You'll notice Dave's style in the way I play it also (octaves, 9ths, etc.). Look for it in soon.

i play it in standard tuning everyday and rob it's not a 914, he plays it on a 714

OK. Dave does NOT use a capo when playing this song.
He does, however, use a guitar with a radically different tuning
in which he (Monk, really) presumably re-strings the guitar
to achieve the effect.

Now, if you want to play it the way Dave does (I suggest you
find a copy of the 5-12-02 YNK video) you'll need to do this, too.
BUT, if you want to play it without restringing, you
can simply use a capo on the 7th fret to get a tuning that is
the same as Dave uses, except the pitch of the high "b" string
will be an octave high. It is much easier to do this, and get the
nice, full sound this song has, than to forget about the capo
and try to come up with something that will simply get by...

Did anyone happen to check out the four songs on VH1 last night. YNK was clearly played in standard tuning. He used the same guitar for Where Are You Going. I had a standard tuning tab ready for this but I'll have to tweak it again to match what Dave played last night. If anyone else has tabbed this from teh VH1 concert "On the Roof Top" please send me a copy, I'd love to see how you tabbed it out. I'll send you mine to compare. Thanks.

You may want to rethink things slightly. YNK was NOT in standard tuning, and NOT played on the same guitar as WAYG. WAYG was played on a 914ce, YNK on a 7-series. Look at the strings on the 7- two big, fat low strings. It's in a weird tuning, alright.

i must have missed the guitar switch. Sorry about that. Do you have your own tab of this tune (standard or non)?

I can't afford another guitar for the proper tuning. Check out Greg's tab- it's pretty much dead on for what we've been seeing.

I have a really hard time believing that Dave is using an alternate tuning...In every article that I have read where he talks about his style, he says that he doesnt like using capo's or alternate tunings other than drop D. I didnt get a chance to see the VH1 show, does anyone have it on there computer or know where I could get it, or that 5-12-02(?) show. I havnt seen Dave play his 714 since the everyday tour, he started to play his 914 religiously. Its been his 914c, taylor baritone, and his Jerry Jones.

Rob
08-07-2002, 10:12 PM
Like I mentioned, I picked up a cheesy acoustic today, tuned it the way that tab suggested, and bingo- it's perfect in sound and also along with Dave's hands. It's not that hard to believe, considering it's baritone tuning but an octave higher.

AcE25

So he plays it on his baritone??? If he plays it on his baritone then yeah I can believe it.

Just restrings the acoustic to the bari notes... = written originally on bari, but wanted a lighter feel.
