Guitar. Absolutely guitar. Banjo is all about fingerpicking and that's not something easily learned. I'd get down the basics of a guitar first honestly. Once you have a handle on an acoustic guitar, other instruments are really easy to learn.

You can even go from a guitar to what is sometimes called a "Guitjo". It's a guitar neck on a banjo body, so you don't have to learn new tunings and chords.

Oh, also a kewl side note, John Lennon started out playing Banjo, and when he first started playing guitar he tuned it like a banjo (leaving the high e string just flapping there) and played banjo chords. Paul was the person who taught him how to tune a guitar right, and how to play guitar chords.
