they sound like a pretty good band overall but I am not a fan of the vocals. It might just be me but the vocals are just average. It also bugs me how much they are like a dave matthews cover band playing their own songs. just my opinion

I can really see that b/c they are all really into DMB. They're more of a live band. When you hear them live, you really don't think 'dave'.

Awesome Thread OP. I posted a thread about this band immediately after seeing them open for g. love. They were incredible live, and I couldn't ignore the likeness to dmb. But when It comes down to it i can't hate a band that sounds similar to my favorite band. Who is your cousin, because if its donnie then you're lucky, he's ridiculous at the drums. Rusty went to my high school for a few years and was friends with my brother, he was always a great all around musician, and I'm glad he's doing big things. But yea if anyone gets the chance to see these guys play, then do it. They are excellent.

Rusty is my cousin. They just got done with a N. Carolina/S. Carolina string of shows and stayed with me for a few days. I got to know the rest of the guys very well. But, Rusty is easily the least-talented member of the band. LOL. They're great even if I'm related to the frontman. Haha.

Yea they're all really good, if you haven't seen this video of Donnie you have to, his expression is very similar to Carter. which is a great thing. the Sax player is really good at just chillin on the tracks and then wailing during his solo's. Tailwind has got to be my favorite track although its only on their reverbnation site.

They do sound way too much like DMB. They even do that truncated-signature-DMB-jam-switch type thing. I only have room enough for the original DMB in my catalog. That's not to say they are not talented b/c they certainly sound like they are, especially the drummer.

I don't hear DMB in their sound as much as some do. Maybe I don't want to hear it but I think their sound is unique. I know the influence is heavy but when I hear them and dave, I don't automatically associate the two. That's just me though.

me and my dad saw them open for tea leaf green, and i think i saw them playing a small thing at one of the dave shows in west palm or tampa. they are definately talented and their album sounds really good. my only problem with them was one: they had trouble playing in harmony during their jams, like it seemed that they would get slightly behind one another and it messed up their sound. and the other problem- not really a problem though- was that me and my dad thought they sounded exactly like dave and that some of their riffs are really similar. good band though, i like his locals, but not entirely original.
and the drummer is really talented, he won some drum off in new york or something i think

I know they do not have any western dates yet. I do know that they are trying to put together some shows out there but it would be in the latter portion of this year/early next. I'll post the dates if/when they are confirmed.

They played in Birmingham on the DMB sidestage. I've never heard them be out-of-sync during their jams but it could happen. I tease Rusty (songwriter/guitar) a lot for his riffs sounding like Daves. Donnie won the Guitar Center National Drum Competition.

Sorry I'm not really a fan. theyre trying way too hard to sound like DMB.

If you only knew; that actually couldn't be further from the truth. They are concerned first and foremost with being unfairly (okay, somewhat fairly) coupled with other DMB tribute/cover/influenced bands. But, if you really listened to them, they don't actually sound that much like DMB. Sure, they took what DMB was/is doing and tried to put their own spin on it. DMB wasn't the first band with a sax playing rock. If these guys didn't have a sax the DMB connection wouldn't be there. What has happened here is that these guys grew up, musically, listening to DMB, among others, and thus their ideas and styles were geared towards that type of sound. But, when they play, people can't get past the stylistic nod (having a sax, playing jammy-type rock) to their favorite band to see that they actually don't sound that much like their idols. I'm sure it happens all the time to up-and-coming bands, though. Most people aren't willing to acknowlege them as having their own sound just because there are shreds of influence in there too. Influences, shminfluences I've always said.

They are far more talented than any DMB cover band that I've heard. But there is no denying that they sound just like DMB. The singer/guitarist even looks a little like Dave and dances like him on stage. And in the middle of a breakdown in 'Fool in the Dark' (I think that was it) - there is a blatant Minarets rip off riff. You can't really believe that they are not at least 90% DMB? I understand that they are friends of yours... but they are not going to make it anywhere without changing their sound a little. It's fine to be influenced by a band, but it doesn't mean you have to be a copy.
I'm really not trying to throw out insults here, I just hate to see talent wasted (and I truly believe they are very talented). So my only hope is that they change their sound to become something original. I don't remember any 'up and coming bands' that lasted more than 10 minutes that sounded exactly like someone else.

I'm not offended by differing opinions. I'm just think that if I listened to them and had to name a band they sound like, my first response would be Bela Fleck and the Flecktones it they had a vocalist. Then again, they would still sound like some other band. But, that's the name of the game in this age. Nothing's original, it's all been done before. So....lol.

Well I can easily tell they're very talented and I'm sure they're very good live. However, for building following and being successful (at least in this genre of music) the most single most important thing is originality. While I'm sure they have tons of other influences, the only one you hear distinctly is DMB. Due to DMB's level of success and distinct brand of sound, this will only hurt Elmwood. I hope step they outside themselves to see that. The demographic they'll want and need is the same people who love DMB. Most DMB fans will resent hearing a band this similar to them while admiring their talent and flattery. For goodness sakes, John Mayer was called Dave Matthews for years and we know he doesn't sound like DMB. Do you really think the majority of the public will see the subtleties?

What's my point? These guys are good. Talented. Have Potential. And they can easily have minor success being a live touring band on the verge of survival. I just hoped they don't invest all their chips in this singular sound.

I also believe that if a band and its members truly dig inside themselves to reach for their wealth of inspirations they'll always come out with a unique sound. However, a lot of musicians get caught favoring one style and a band comes out sounding like another (like DMB) and it's usually because of the band's main leader's direction.

I say this as a lifetime musician who has yet to truly figure out my sound or vision. However, until I was 17, I tried to sing and play like Dave in every way. I then started to see others and others upon others do it and it always left a sick feeling in my mouth. From there I changed my searched and have continued to bring my other influences just as strongly.

How do you, yourself, think they sound like Dave? I'm curious to hear in-depth criticism on why they sound like DMB. What is it? Many people simply say, "they sound like dave". But that's all they say. Will you, if you don't mind, be more specific on what you think it is sounds too similar?

Sounds good to me. Thanks for posting. I do agree that they have a DMB sound to them, but as I'm a big fan of DMB, I like it. Like it's been said, they probably sound different live, just like every other band. I'd like to hear some live stuff, and then make more of a "judgment". Either way, something I can easily get into.

Probably getting a lot of "they sound like Dave" comments because we are on Antsmarching.org. The similarity is there definitely, especially in a song like 'What's It For," yet it isn't too much of a copy at all. And of course like any good band that lasts they will develop their sound.

Saw them both nights at DC and they were pretty good. They do sound like DMB a little, but at least they don't just cover DMB songs. Also Daryl(G-Money) Dave's head of security was watching Elmwood also and he seemed to enjoy them alot. My friend and I got a pic with G-money after Elmwood was done...pretty neat. We also talked to Rusty the lead singer for a little bit about the band and where they were from and all that jazz he was a real nice guy seemed to enjoy what he was doing and that's all thta matters really.:thumbsup:thumbsup

lol... pretty sweet band! I think most of us pick up the connection with DMB because we're all obsessed with DMB, and we found out about the band in a DMB forum. If we ran into this band randomly at a show, I'm sure you would have a much different perception of them. Sounds like they sing their own stuff, and it's pretty good in my opinion, regardless of who else they 'sound' like. I wish they would play in ca, I'd see them.

Fusing together a series of strikingly inspired influences-- from the vocal acrobatics of Sparks or the Associates to the firm production and galloping percussion of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love-- Leeds art-pop quartet Wild Beasts have arrived at a sound both comfortingly familiar and distinctly eccentric. When frontman Hayden Thorpe isn't moaning or cooing catty double entendres, he's brandishing a dramatic falsetto or unleashing glass-shattering shrieks, projecting the vulnerability and depravity of his sexually frustrated protagonists. In contrast to the fidgety, impulsive rock of their promising 2008 debut Limbo, Panto, Two Dancers finds Wild Beasts refashioned as a steely art-funk outfit that's all the more alluring for its newfound austerity.

That is an interesting mix of OAR and DMB, but I think that they will need to find their own identity to break out of it. Drummer is wicked good, Sax is legit. Voice is a lot like OAR and I feel like he is emulating Dave in ALOT of ways (Guitar, Songwriting, Arrangements, Lyrics) There is a fine line between imitation and emulation, right now it looks more like imitation. I think the songwriting needs to grow as well. Talented fellows though, I wish them the best! They are doing way better than I am...

While they don't have any western dates yet, I would suggest trying to catch a show sometime down the road. See if your opinions still stand then. Keep checking this thread periodically as I will update it when new dates are added. I know they want to branch westward in the reasonably near future.

I know you've been thinking of a DMB cover for them... what've you got?

I know they try not to play Dave covers for the simple reason that they already get the comparisons anyway. But, the last time they were staying at my place, we had a long jam session. One of the songs we played was #41. Tore it up.

Also, one time they were playing the bar scene and nobody was there. Only two guys at the bar and they weren't listening. So, instead of playing their songs, they covered a few DMB songs and dicked around on stage for a while. I'm pretty sure they could play any Dave song they'd like to.

They do sound way too much like DMB. They even do that truncated-signature-DMB-jam-switch type thing. I only have room enough for the original DMB in my catalog. That's not to say they are not talented b/c they certainly sound like they are, especially the drummer.

I think when DMB came along they sort of created a new genre.. how many bands out there sound like nirvana or stp or nickelback.. no one says much.. it's just acceptable.

...but when you put a sax, acoustic guitar, drums and a violin together people say "aw they are to much like DMB" DMB to me created a new genre and the few that have followed in their footsteps are suprisingly successful cause people dig it. Look how much they are touring.

Heh, I like how you keep responding with that and everyone else (including me!) keeps ignoring it... maybe we should start a new Elmwood Band thread thread that states very publicly on the front page how you and we have no association to the band.

Anyway, discounting all that, everyone on this site should check this band out.

I keep saying it because, like you've noted, people keep inferring it from my posts. I don't want it to come off like I'm a member of Elmwood shamelessly promoting myself. I am associated with them but I'm not a band member and I don't hold an official title within the band or their inner-workings. So, I'm simply trying to disassociate myself from them, in that regard, so there is no confusion.

Listening to Waterloo now. So far I like what I hear for the most part. I guess they have a DMB feel but having listened to this one song the first band that came to mind was O.A.R...I do hope that most of there stuff stays away from the O.A.R. sound...because I fucking HATE O.A.R.

OK just heard What Is It For...That's DMB not O.A.R...Man that song is pretty badass.

And if Dreaming Little Things verse isn't early DMB I don't know what is...Good shit though. I think I like these guys.

These guys are cool. I saw them in blacksburg, va opening for tea leaf (More like, tea leaf was the after show band.) I can't imagine how he writes some of his songs that sound so similar to some DMB stuff. For example, the song "ways of a maid" has a salsa jam with the same chord progression as warehouse aaand they sing "twist and shout" during it - so similar to dmb's louie louie in warehouse. Regardless, they are all really down to earth guys and I would definitely see them again if I get the chance.

I purchased their album off amazon - very good stuff. Definite influence from DMB but in a bad way at all. Dare I say this - I like the album Dreaming Little Things more than three DMB studio albums and a couple they don't surpass are almost in the same ball park.

If they tour close to South Dakota, I'd go.

At first, the DMB comparisons are blinding (and that's just because I'm a huge DMB fan). But these guys are mad talented. Their sound will change, as did DMB's. Their initial sound happens to sound similar to DMB. Looking forward to seeing these guys the first chance I get. Thanks for the thread!

I can really see that b/c they are all really into DMB. They're more of a live band. When you hear them live, you really don't think 'dave'.

Dude their song samples were from live shows... But anyway Cool music. Very DMB which is good and bad but i am not digging the vocals either. I hate OAR and thats what the guy sounds like... Looks like they are being met with some success which is always super cool so i wish them luck.

Central NC. If they had a show in Greensboro or Winston Salem, I wouldn't miss it. If they were in the Charlotte or Raleigh area, I'd make every possible effort to get there.

I had thought they had posted something about getting more NC shows up in October and November at one time.

Not entirely. They disbanded from their former form (Acoustic Guitar, Sax, Bass, Drums). The singer/acoustic guitarist and drummer stayed together, and have recently added, or at least are in the process of adding, a bassist, keyboardist, and electric guitarist.

You can read all about Elmwood news and information from the fan-run form (downgraded ants, haha) here:

A brief review of the posts on the board (including from the band themselves) will get you up to date.
