I've been playing for a few months, and I'm of those guys that can play parts of a ton of songs...I can play the intro to Two Step, most of OSW, some of Gravedigger and Granny, main riffs of LIOG and Ants (tho its slow) and the "dave chords" of LIOG, Grey St, Tripping Billies, TM, etc...any advice on which FULL songs would be good to learn first? thanks

My recommendation for new guitarists, start with Dylan. A lot of the time he uses simple chords with the occasional capo, and his rhythms on most songs is not hard to learn. You could easily get through the 10 verses if Desolation Row:
(live version from 1966, no capo)
D - G - D - A - G - D x 2
G - D - G - D - A - G - D
D - Dsus4 x whatever, since it's filler
It's a beautiful song, actually my favorite song of his.

I would not consider those beginners. I also think Raven is hard for beginners, the Chorus has some stretching.

the best advice i would give is to stay away from dmb songs a little and work on some other songs with just major and minor chords. time of your life-greenday comes to mind as a very easy song to play

do we really still call them "dave chords?" cuz... like every guitar player uses them...

I would start with "Ain't It Funny..." No stretches and easy to sing along with. After that I would learn LIOG all the way through. At the very least you'll have a song fun to play along with buddies.

whats trippin you up on gravedigger?
lol, i dont know if that was supposed to be sarcastic or not, but i found it funny.
I was the same way. I broke out of it when my dad made fun of me for only knowing intros to songs. In suburbia it was a pretty tremadic experience. So I started learning full songs.
Even if the other parts don't seem as cool, harder, or whatever, just truck through it and learn it. #41 is a good building block.

I think Spoon is your best bet.
You can get away with not playing it exactly like Dave and it will still sound good. I'd also suggest that you stick with a song until you can get past some of the stumbling blocks. If you only play what comes to you will end up being the guy who can only play parts of songs.
EDIT: Halloween is pretty basic as well if you feel like hammering out something heavy.

If you're feeling a little brave try my youtube tutorials (http://www.youtube.com/mszorad) for Jimi Thing. It was honestly one of the first songs I learned and I think is the most fun Dave song to play. SMTS and Tripping Billies are a little tougher but quite honestly I don't think there's any reason not to try playing them now. Just practice every day and you'll get it. I learned from dmbtabs as well.

wow, did i really recommend BOWA? my bad. that is definitely not for a starter.
I know Everyday gets a lot of hate, but I love playing it, along with #36 and LBV.

I don't think BoWA is too bad. There's a few slides in there, but Dave's guitar work (for virtually any of his songs) isn't the toughest. Some of his stretches are difficult for the beginner, but quite honestly, I think anyone can play any Dave song well with enough practice. I'd start by playing whatever song made you want to pick up the guitar in the first place :)

For the most part Dave songs aren't overly crazy to try to play ... it all changes when you try to sing along with the guitar parts though.
