This is from the Live at Luther College track. At some point during the solo with the slide thing (i'm not sure exactly what it is called), Tim goes to the 23rd and the 29th fret. I have watched it on the DVD and I am baffled at how a human being can get that sound out of a guitar. My questions are:

Do i need a slide object (?) to get that sound?

Can it be done acoustically? I know Tim is playing an acoustic guitar, but that sound is far from acoustic.

Thanks for any light shed on this subject!

Slide and a digital delay pedal. Done.

Luther College on DVD? When did that happen?

sorry, i have radio city. they didn't even do ants marching there. I just imagined that.

but can you still play where you don't have frets with out the delay pedal, just with the slide? no amp either?

yeah. A slide turns your guitar into a simpler instrument. Harder to play in tune. It essentially becomes fretless. However, in order to play the "8th fret" on the "B" string, for instance, you would put the slide at the very front of the 8th fret; almost going onto the 9th.

Now when you say 29th fret... where is it? Who knows, lol. Just listen and play it over and over until you get the idea of where it is so that you can hit it every time.

Watch some videos and it will start to make sense. Here's a decent looking chick trying to teach slide. It should answer your questions a little better than me.
