Something I noticed some years ago when I caught John Mayer's Any Given Thursday on TV, during which he was playing a solo, and played ripped off a line LeRoi played. Which I then realized Roi used twice on two separate studio albums- Lover Lay Down and Proudest Monkey. Anyone else notice this? Funny stuff.

It's called quoting and leroi did it a lot. Many musicians do it.

I know exactly what riff you're talking about I didn't know Mayer used it though.

Doesn't necessarily mean he's ripping it off though, it could be in tribute.

yeah if he wrote a song and claimed it as his own based around this line then yes he ripped it off.

but, if it is a line in an improvised solo then it is him paying tribute or honoring LeRoi, it is well known that John Mayer is a DMB fan.

so, no this is not a ripped off line, if you are calling Mayer on this then LeRoi was ripping off people for decades.

people love ripping on this guy.

although rightfully so, he is an amazing guitarist and has lots of money, bangs hot chicks and could easily steal your girlfriend.

any guy would want to rip on him.

i on the other hand idolize him. :lol

i kinda admire that john mayer listens to good musicians and is influenced by them.

agreed

I also enjoy his riff on #41 when he guested in 2007... sounded really good. Interpolations for the win!

i doubt he was up there thinking, "oh lets tip off leroi." it's been noted than JM had influences in DMB. plus he's soloing, the man's a berkley grad, he doesnt need leroi's riffs

Relax. I'm not calling out Mayer as a phony, incapable original musician. I was merely pointing it out that he's showing his love for Roi's playing. A tip of the hat, if you will. Point of the post was to say "hey, cool" not "hey not cool." Furthermore, Mayer didn't graduate Berklee. He went for a few semesters. Either way, he's good on his own. Just wanted to point something fun out.

Covered In Rain... what a tune! The As/Is version of this song is the tits.

Wouldn't it be sweet to have a catalogue full of all the interpolations that Roi did over his career?

Then why the thread title?

"Ripping off" isnt a tip of the hat usually.....

yeah when i saw John last summer he played this riff during one of his songs (the same as is on AGT) and he spent a little time talking about Roi (this was right after his death) and what he did for the music community. He dedicated part of his show to him and played #34... it was beautiful.

But I always love listening to that riff, no matter who plays it... always great memories of Roi.

he went for a short period and said he learned a lot there, but not in class. i attended berklee for a short time, but could not afford it for 4 years so am going to a music school i can afford for a couple years now before transferring.

covered in rain is the best on any given thursday. I think there's 2 or 3 interpolations in that song alone. Mayer does it alot, but so did Roi. Probably with alot of shit we dont even know. There's nothing wrong, IMO, with tagging a song or mixing in somebody else's phrases. It's different when you take somebody else's licks and create an entire song out of it... Waiting on the World to Change is a clear Curtis Mayfield rip off. Other than that, mayer tends to be pretty creative in his interpolations... If he had fans like DMB fans his setlists would be riddled with tags. However, most of the people who listen to his stuff couldn't tell Miles from Coltrane... lol.

What line are you talking about? Did you ever consider that maybe LeRoi also "ripped" it off? Musicians play what they hear in their head (good ones at least). I doubt it's truly an exclusive LeRoi lick.
