Just got back from the show at Clementines in Harrisonburg, and it was awesome. Regardless how people may feel when Jeff plays with dmb, when he took center stage tonight he was fuckin incredible. Best I have ever heard him play, no solo in any dmb song comes close to what he did tonight.
All in all, the show was very cool. The other members of the band were amazing too. I dont know too much about them as a whole, but they played great. Jeff did his two sax thing, pretty similar to Jimi Things which was very cool. The show really exploited the horns with many lengthy, yet satisfying solos. After the first song I figured I would get tired pretty quick, but they did a great job keeping things fresh and interesting throughout.
Got to talk to Jeff A little after the show and was able to ask a few questions. First, I asked him how it is going from playing to a crowd like Alpine to playing to a crowd of maybe 150. He said that playing huge venues like that, the pressure is really off, and the intamacy is not there like in a smaller venue. If he misses a note, its not as big a deal as playing to a smaller crowd. He really enjoys both for different reasons.
I asked him what hes plans were with the Flecktones and he said they are playing shows in December, out midwest maybe, and possibly in NC, he wasnt really sure.
I asked how was it playing last year with dave on such a long tour. I asked if they all got tired or worn out towards the end. He said that it was a monster of a tour, and really the main key to the success of the individual venues was the sleep the night before. He said that was the main thing. I asked if anyone got tired of one another, he said not really, its all in how you take things. I agreed.
In addition to talking about the tours, he was really down to talk about all his music playing. I was skeptical to hound on dmb questions, but he kept bringing up that this Mu'tet was a 'side project' and that the flecktones was something that he did for fun because he loved it. He really made touring with Dave out to be a main part of his playing career. Made me feel better about talking to him about the tours.
He said this years tour will most definitely be shorter, but he hasn't seen the schedule so he doesnt know exactly where or just how long.
Jeff is a really cool guy, he was down to tell me everything about his playing in different bands and projects he had. Honestly, I really got the feel that he it just one of those musicians who plays just for the fun of it. Everything I brought up he told me everything about it, and was really excited to get back on the road with the boys again. Really cool night, If any of yal get to take in a Mu'tet show, I highly Recomend it!!!
