I started this thread (a long time ago) because I have two friends who NEVER use a pic. They only use their fingers to strum, even when the song is just chords.

grow your fingernails...i hold the pick so far down that its like i dont play with one anyway

I started playing without ever using a pick so to this day it feels more natural to finger pick or strum with my nails/thumb, but yes a pick is essential too.

yeah, I'm a both. If i'm just fiddling around, I don't, but when I play seriously, I like to get the crisper sound out of my guitars.
