As epic of an encore that KKJ and Two Step is, I have to say that I am a tad bit disappointed that there wasn't something less expected there. KKJ was great where it was, but Two Step, I dunno. It feels to predictable. I haven't really wow-ed since Hartford N1 and SPAC N2 when they played Idea of You.
Don't get me wrong, I'm incredibly happy with this set and encore, but I just want more. Maybe that's selfish, maybe its unrealistic. I dunno.

I wonder if they actually played a bit of Time Bomb or if Dave just used the Time Bomb lyrics as the intro to two step, anyone know? I hope it was a Time Bombish intro rather than just the lyrics. Contrary to some others here, I really like Time Bomb live; it kicked ass on Saturday night.
Side note - a midset stay is sweet (I got one 6-10-2006), but even better would be if they mixed up the closers. I think someone mentioned that they'd like to see SMTS or ASTB for some variety. What about Too Much as a show closer. Other than Last Stop, what other songs would be good to close the set or show - maybe DIDO> Stone? Or how about JTR, Rapunzel, or DDTW.

06-09-2010, 01:05 AM
couple quick notes about tonight:
1) the first 11 or so songs were awesome. the band was rocking and it was well on it's way to being a fantastic show. from can't stop through YMDT, the band went to autopilot, the crowd went to autopilot, and the show lost its energy. the encore was great but without anything from BCTS and no debuts, i was a little disappointed because that was my 4th show in 5 days and i had seen all of those songs at SPAC already except SUAD.
2) yes, he did the last few lyrics to time bomb as the beginning lyrics to two step. i like it a lot. it sounds cool.
3) dave did not sing at all on nancies tonight. i know the almanac says crowd sings most of the lyrics. it's wrong. the fans sang the entire thing! dave just let it happen. it was actually pretty awesome.
4) jimi thing is consistently the highlight of the night. the whole band gets into it and i love it more and more every time.

This band is so setlist stupid. or lazy. not sure.
As a stand alone show, its a good show. But in the context of the tour, theyre playing the same songs over and over and over. Does this band realize theyre not touring next year? I find it sad that I can predict 90% of a show.

I've been hooked on Cry Freedom lately, especially the version off of the Haiti relief collection. A treat hearing it tonight. So much emotion packed into a little song. Jeff and Rashawn laid low on this one, so when the sax solo came it was as if they didn't even want to touch what Roi had perfected. Noticed at the end that Dave walked the back of the stage past Carter and was wiping his face from what I'm assuming were tears. A moment I won't forget...

Yessssss during Fonz's solo we heard a bit of the opening riff from Last Stop, (I think, just drove a couple hours home and now everything is a little hazy) We were about to lose our minds but before we got too excited, Dave came in for Watchtower.

might have already been discussed but on n1 was there a spaceman>cornbread>too much (fake)>ants (fake)>too much (partial)>ants or did i just imagine the first ants fake.... pretty incredible even though i think im wrong but if it did happen its exciting since they have been doing the too much (fake) into ants all last year. also love how cornbread can go into anything this year, every time i hear it... which is every show i'm excited to see what it goes into.

I don't see what's wrong with either one of these sets. This is a great 2-night stand.
Both sets were very good, and people would be jerking it if this was 2 weeks ago. However, it is kind of strange that we have seen 50 straight songs this tour without one being BTCS (last was DDTW at SPAC), and 39 straight without a tour debut only 8 shows into the tour (last was Some Devil at SPAC).
With a little break before the next real show (not counting Bonnaroo), I'm wondering if the sets will start changing and they will focus on another album, as this leg as been LWS heavy.

I enjoyed these two nights very much! Thanks to the band! :thumbsup
Not how I remember my first DMB show in Mansfield, which was back in 96, but life goes on. Then I could tailgate for hours, jam at the show, and sleep for 15 hours the next day. Now its more like run home from work and change, grab something quick to eat on the drive in, arrive in time to catch the opening band and then DMB, get home and to bed by 1am, only to get back up at 5am and get to work on time.
So needles to say I am dead tired this morning, but it was worth it all. I understand the complaining about what songs they play if you are lucky enough to follow the band around this summer, but for someone like me who will only see these two shows for this year and next, I could not be happier.
So time to get back to work for me (listening to 6/7/96 will help, look up that set!), you all enjoy the rest of the tour (I’ll be keeping an eye on the sets) and stay safe.

couple quick notes about tonight:
1) the first 11 or so songs were awesome. The band was rocking and it was well on it's way to being a fantastic show. From can't stop through ymdt, the band went to autopilot, the crowd went to autopilot, and the show lost its energy.

The fun part about that is you're correct that it happened, however, it was only boyd that went into Ants. Then almost everyone in the band turned in his direction and you could see Timmy tell him what they were doing. So realistically it shouldn't go down as a fake, just a GREAT screw up by Boyd to add some character to the segue.

My son and I were in the pit last night and I have to say it was nothing short of amazing! We got to the venue early (4:30PM) and we were one of the first in line at the turnstiles. They let us in just after 6PM and we ran to the stage (literally). When we got down to the pit they were checking tickets, voiding them, and put wristbands on us that said "Groo Pit" on them. After that it was a matter of establishing our position for the night. Because we were so early we were able to get DEAD center on the barricade. We were right in front of Dave the entire night. There is no better way to see a show. My son ended up getting one of Carter's sticks and I just missed a Dave pick. The crowd around us was great. I gave a young engaged couple behind us a couple of songs on the barricade and they loved it. We're spoiled now and will do the pit every time. The key is getting there early and skip the tailgating. Don't drink anything that's going to make you go to the bathroom and give up your spot. Believe me, it's worth it. Here's a link to a pic-not great quality, but it shows where we were. http://antsmarching.org/forum/attachmentviewer.php?attachmentid=55917&d=1276089134

Whats up Everyone...
Just signed up. I frequent the forums often just never registered but figured Id give my take on N2 of Mansfield.
I am somewhat of a closet fan. I have probably been to over 40 shows within the last 10 years but find it more of a me thing. I only go with 1 or 2 close friends or my gf, never in these packs of people alot of people go in...but is all good to me.
I have only been to 2 shows in the past 3 or 4 years. Everything else was back in 2000-2004. The previous 2 shows before last night were Night 2 of both Fenway shows last year and back in 06...both were awesome sets.
After my first show in quite sometime, I was pretty pleased with what I got last night. What seems to be a trend that every one mentions is the crowds, I def noticed there are alot of "new" fans these days, which is both great yet a bit depressing. "New" fans take out the mystique and nostalgia of classic songs like "Jimi Thing" and Ill even go as far to say "Bartender" given its importance of Roi's legacy. They kill the vibe of such great songs by either not knowing them or leaving to pee, which is a bummer. In turn they add alot more punch to the new songs from BW and such...the crowd last night was filled with "New" fans but never the less I still had a great time.
As far as the set, it was VERY mellow. Other then Jimi Thing, YMDT, 2step the jams were def short.
The first 10 songs to me (other then seven) were awesome!! I havent heard Big Eyed Fish for a longgg time live so that was a great way to open then right into Bartender...I was psyched. It really sounded great and being a fan for as long as I have, brought memories of Roi so that was welcomed.
Jimi Thing sounded really good and I was happy to hear You and Me as I think its one of the best new songs on the album.
Nancies I am a little over the crowd singing it, but was still a nice treat given that slot could have been filled with something from BW.
Cry Freedom def brought the vibe down a bit, but was good to hear a classic song from back in the day.
I am a huge fan of Idea of You and Daves voice was really on par for this song tonight. He can get kind of pitchy with it, but he nailed it last night so another great song to hear.
I actually really enjoyed Crash and Gravedigger. They brought a little something extra to Crash, more energy then normal so altho as mellow of a song it is, it actually brought some life back into the crowd. Dave sung Gravedigger really well and was very intense full band version. I really enjoyed it.
Timmy ripped YMDT and Yes Stefan did drop some hints of Last Stop in the Bass intro of Watchtower, I actually thought we might have gotten it!! lol...but to no avail.
Dave dedicated KKJ to a 13 year old whos been to 350 shows, so thats why they slotted it in E1...sick version last night.
2 step was by far the best one I have heard and they always tend to close the Boston shows out with it one of the nights.
Overall id give the show 8 out 10. If I heard "Grey Street" "#41" "Warehouse" it wouldnt sent it into outer space, but nevertheless very solid and I def am satisfied with my night...
Hope eveyone enjoys the rest of the tour. Stay Easy.

Great show last night. BEF through Shake Me is a strong strong run. I have a new found appreciation for Seven, and it was great to hear BEF, Sweet Up and Down, Cry Freedom, and Hello Again. Can't Stop through Gravedigger is a little weak, but I must say Can't Stop has improved a lot, and the crowd was really into it, at least on the lawn where I was. YMDT and Watchtower to close was solid and the encore was awesome. I was a little bummed because I really thought we were getting Last Stop but KKJ and Two Step were both great. Best two night stand of the tour so far in my opinion.

So to clear some things up off the bat, I am DividedSky05 on twitter, and I was on the rail at the lawn, right side. The security guard in front of me said that this morning before they all got going with the day's preparations that the show was being filmed for HBO. No other details. There weren't any other cameras on hand other than the standard cameras that provide the feed for the big screens. I immediately called foul but I wanted to post it anyway, don't shoot the messenger. I don't think it's true nor does it mean anything.
Onto the show. 12th one for me. Fish/Bartender/Seven was easily predicted but a lot of fun. Jeff on the pennywhistle was my new "That's not Leroi" moment. He can fool me with some songs and solos but the soul behind the old Bartender solos has changed. Nancies was completely instrumental. I'm sure that bothered people, but I've heard Nancies in its normal form 3 times, so having it like that wasn't a big deal. Out of all the songs on the setlist, the music stands up on its own better than most. It was weird, and some people complained. I sang.
The show went into a tailspin for me after Shake Me. I didn't get to hear this last year only going to Fenway so I was excited. I love it on the album and I love it live although Dave needs to go into the high register vocals with harmony in the bridge.
Can't Stop is a bust live. Dave defends it with "I like that song" and that's fine. But historically the songs he says that about are songs that kill the crowd energy.
Crash/Gravedigger/YMDT were my 6th, 5th and 5th respectively, so I sort of just shut off, appreciated it for what it was but it was hard to get into.
Fonz's solo was distinctly Last Stopish. Just the verse riff. Crowd didn't get it for the most part (again I was on the lawn.) Watchtower has really been shortened to the point where they need to remove the set/show ending stigma from it. Put it in the main set or get rid of the bass intro and open with it. It still makes an impact and people get to scream and rock out, but I'll be damned if last night's jam went beyond 2-3 minutes.
KKJ was surprising. I couldn't see the 12 string pre-song but that was the only 12 string song left at that point. Two Step was as obvious as it comes but probably my favorite version I've seen live. THAT is a show-ender.
Fun night, much better first half of the set than the second, even though the crowd absolutely ate up Crash and Gravedigger. No standout individual performances, Carter took some nice solos (including a very Say Goodbye/Halloweenish solo to start Gravedigger w/ orange lights. grr.) and Timmy was in much more of a supporting role than at Fenway last year. I always wish I had more. Also love the AntsLive feature to the site.

This. I was very excited there for a minute or two, thinking we would get Say Goodbye.

Best two night stand of the tour so far in my opinion.
glad you had fun on the lawn dude! :thumbsup
how was the sound out there?
i agree...cant stop, crash, gravedigger kind of brought the energy down

Not that I was asked specifically but the sound was very good out on the lawn. Only annoying parts were the opening of BEF and Nancies, tough to hear the lower levels on Dave's guitar. They've improved their soundsystem, now if they can just improve the parking lot.
I've never heard Carter go into such an extensive solo before Gravedigger. Really threw me off.

This band is so dumb.
Can't Stop was actually one of the highlights of the show! Was never a huge fan of song,(ok, hated it) but it's almost completely re-imagined. very bluesy/r&b vibe to it tonight. one of the best evolutions of a song so far. the show itself was stellar (pretty close to best of my 80+)

Yeah man it was a good time, didn't even get into the lot till almost 7 though, which sucked. Sound was pretty good.

Agreed. Intro to BEF was hard to hear. And the Gravedigger intro sounded so much like Say Goodbye, I was getting excited.

Agreed. I thought Can't Stop had the crowd pumped. I liked it a lot more than any other version I've heard.

also anyone else see the two jerks, one had a hat and a red shirt on, the other a plaid collared shirt try to move their way in front of everyone else? I'm talking pushing short girls out of the way to get an inch closer. I pushed one of the kids twice and poured my beer down the back of his leg when he stepped on my foot..and my buddy was about 5 mins from knocking the other one out.

Also, regarding the camera crew… I was over near the busses pre show and saw a film crew following a boy and his family as they arrived at the venue, got some passes, and was escorted in the venue on their way to meet the band. I am not sure if it’s the same boy who got his wish to hear KKJ for the encore, but I am guessing it is.
