Hey guys,
I was just wondering about a mic setup. I've noticed some people
have their mic plugged into a mixer. I was wondering what the mixer is plugged in. Is it a guitar amplifier, or their computer?
Thanks.

Could you be a little more specific.

The amplification of the mic. What's amplying the mic? That's basically what I mean. Some people use mixers with their mics which are plugged into a computer or amp. Something like that. I just wanted more information.

You plug the mic into a mixer, and the mixer is plugged into amplifier (not like a guitar amplifier). The amplifier is then connected to a speaker. The amplifier powers the speaker. These speakers are usually PA speakers or vocal speakers. If you just want a little amplification, you could plug the mic directly into a combo amp (amp and speaker combined, think a combo guitar amp for example), or if you have a special box, you can plug your mic right into your computer. Does this answer your question?

for those playing the home game:
Somebody like dave would have this setup from mic to PA
Mic>>>Effects>>>Mixer>>>Main Mix>>>Power Amp>>>Passive Speaker
other things you can do are
Mic>>>Powered Mixer>>>Speaker
Mic>>>Mixer>>>Active Speaker
Mic>>>Mixer>>>USB device>>>Computer
Mic>>>usb connection>>>computer
Mic>>>Guitar Amp
Mic>>>PA System (like this carvin amp http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=AG100D)
or you can just yell really loud.
SO MANY CHOICES!!!

Mics are either using built-in microphone pre-amplifiers in mixers and audio interfaces or if you have money to spend, you buy a separate mic preamp and install it so the signal flow looks like this: Microphone > Preamp > Mixer / AI
