A Few Questions About Furthur

Hello all, and God bless cable modems.
I'm liking Furthur more and more, but I have a few questions. I see a lot of mp3 shows on Furthur and they are smaller in size than the SHN shows. Will I be able to hear, appreciably, and difference in mp3 and SHN shows if I download mp3? I doubt that I would be able to really tell the difference. I know that trading mp3s is a no-no, and that's fine, I just want some of these shows for my personal collection.
Next, how do I "share the love" on further? I want to post some of my shows (non-mp3) on Further so other folks can have them. Any thoughts on how? I figure I could rip the songs off my disc, then use mkwact or whatever to convert the wav.s back into SHN.s, then place those files in the further folder. Is that how it works?
One last question: why is it that the conncection speeds vary so much? I was downloading two shows at once over the weekend and one show was coming in at about 100 kbps and the other was coming in at 1,200 kbps. They were both being pulled from 2 active sources, so I just can't explain the difference.
Any help is always appreciated.

The speed difference has a lot to do with where they're coming from, the person's upload speed. Cable modems and ADSL are heavily weighted on the download side with much slower upload speeds. That 1200K pull had to be coming from someone with an industrial strength connection!:D
Pushkar is right about not sharing the WAV->SHN's. You should either share SHN's that you've traded for or ones that you get from the ants http or ftp servers.
You should also look into the news group scene since you've got cable. Check out the alt.binaries thread to see about finding your providers news server and getting in on that action. Good way to get SHNs.

Another way to share on Furthur would be to post any of the shn's you download from other servers on Furthur.

Your question on mp3s vs shns is a common one on the ants forums. Maybe someone smarter than me could create a resource page on ants that would explain technically and in plain english the pros and cons of mp3s.

How do you get such good speeds on furthur? I get 100+ KB/sec about 1 in every 50 shows I try to download from there. Any tips?

If I knew I would tell you. I think that 1200 kbps pull was a freak of nature. I haven't gotten that high since then. I'm getting anywhere b/w 50 to 100 to as high as 800 kbps these days. I don't know if there's a rhyme or reason to it. I'm still trying to figure out how to keep connected to furthur.net over night. Every morning when I wake up I've been disconnected. Any thoughts on that?

When I'm away from my computer, not downloading or uploading anything, after 30 minutes my system stands-by, which I guess disconnects you from everything else. If that's the problem you have, you go into My Computer: Control Panel: Display: Screen Saver: Settings and you change the system stand by.


Back to the furthur thing, I WISH I averaged 50-100kb. When I try to download I usually get l ike 2kb/s, lower than a 56k download!!

Are you running on a cable modem or dial up? That probably would make a lot of difference. I am talking WAY out of my depth here. I'm trying to learn quickly as I go, but I'm still really new to this.

go to option in further and change kb to K theres a huge difference

and watch his download speeds drop like a brick...

I really did pull 7.12.02 off of furthur at about 1,200 kbps. I'm too stupid to lie about it. I got the whole show (over 850MB) in less than 3 hours. I thought furthur was the second coming, then my speeds never got back that high. I still flirt with 1,000 from time to time.

again your using kilobits(kb) not KiloBytes(KB)

1200 kilobits = 146Kilobytes

if you were getting 1200Kilobytes it would be 1.2megs a sec which I highly doubt

you were getting 146K a sec which is a good speed and can download a shn show in 3hours

Um okay, like I said. I'm new to the whole furthur thing. I appreciate any and all help given. I will try and be more accurate and informed when I pass that information along in the future.

Oh I see. Yeah I get in the 100's quite a few time, but never over 100 like you said. But if you got the kb/k thing switched around.

Because if you were getting 1.2MB/s you would get the show in a lot less than 3 hours. I can get some shows in a little over/under 2 hours if I get a good connection.

I don't understand how the d/l speeds on Furthur are derived either, but I do know they can be pretty decent. As an example, I'm on DSL and am d/l the 7-25-02 show at 30Kb/sec. I downloaded the 7-28-02 show at over 200Kb/sec. I have had speeds as high as 400 to 500Kb/sec but that is not the norm. I typically expect to see 25 to 60 Kb/sec. Anything greater is a plus. Time of day doesn't seem to impact the speeds.
