I have a nice piccalo (sp?) Pearl snare with my set. You can lower the tone pretty easily. I like the sound of it.

i was always under the impression that carter used a piccolo snare until 8/3.....looked like it was a standard 14" X 7"....maybe a little bit deeper, but i dunno.

Carter plays a Paiste Spirit of 2002 snare drum designed and built by custom drum builder Jeff Ocheltree. The size is 6"x13." The size that Carter plays isn't for sale, however, the 5.5"x13" is and, according to Paiste America, retails for $2,040.

From drum magazines, the internet, and I had the opportunity to speak with Carter's drum tech Henry Luniewski in the Warehouse chat lounge once. I knew that Carter recently took up playing the Paiste Spirit of 2002 snare so I e-mailed Pasite and they replied with retail prices for different sizes.

Carter plays a 15 x 6 I think...i just bought a 14 x 5 1/4 copper snare from slingerland (musicyo.com) that costs 90 shipped to your door...I think it sounds great too, alot like Carter. I have a pretty good Pearl brass piccollo that versatile. Its barely used so I'm selling it for 225...good crack but also good for ghost notes.

My friend used to play that snare too, the Pearl brass piccollo. It was like four inches deep and he tuned the heads supertight to a point where you could see straight through them. The loudest fucking snare I ever heard. It sounded beautiful, and yes, it was perfect for ghost notes.

Use a trick solid steel. They aren't that expensive and my sound is a cross between carter and the old dave weckl sound. I think it kicks major tail

5.5x14 (remove stock snare and use some good ones)
evans hd dry top
evans 300 g hazy

For the central park show Carter purchased dunnett snare drums. They are really nice and range in price from $400-$800. You should check out the website www.dunnett.com It's real cool. I would recommend something from Pearl. They make nice snares and aren't too terribly expensive.

I was at the 7/1/2008 show and saw him using what appeared to be his new "Signature Snare" from Yamaha. There is alot of speculation of what the shell is made of brass or alum. Im not sure to be honest, but after looking a some pics I took I think its a 6.5x14 or maybe a 6.5x13 size. The tubular lugs that are found on this drum can also be found on the Yamaha Concert Series Snare Drums. Heres a link to see what they look like...http://www.steveweissmusic.com/fullsize/34123/192. As far as a good sound go with a 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty in an Aluminum finish believe me it sounds almost just like the snare he uses now...

Pearl free floating 14 x 3 I think it was, sounds like a cross between a piccolo and a standard 14 x 5. Real nice sound.

Have to remember you'll never get Carters sound because his snare goes through mics which don't pick up the same as your ears, then through EQ and effects.

the new shell could also be titanium. its either aluminum or titanium and 6.5x14 or 6.5x13 (as said before). i have a feeling yamaha isnt going to release this until a new DMB album is released.

I would like to say that you may be right about the titanium shell however, Yamaha does not utilize titanium in the production of its drum shells. So it seems it will have to be either brass or aluminum (which are both very versitle). Also, if the drum shell were titanium this may explain why Yamaha Drum Co.has never massed produced it. It would be far too expesive for most of the general public to even consider buying. Im hoping that a Carter Beauford Signautre Series will debut soon... I know I will be FIRST in line to purchase one. With all that being said what you be willing to pay to get a Carter Beauford sig. snare. My limit is $2000 im not paying anything more considering my Ludwig snare sounds damn good for $500.00

I'm also anxiously waiting for the sig. snare to come out. I just hope it's not super expensive like a lot of Yamaha's signature snares are. Pearl's signature snare drums are nowhere near the price of Yamaha's and are great quality drums. My limit is $1000 for it though.

You have to PAY to PLAY you know what I mean. Pearl sig. drums are cheaper because they make an inferior (cheaper) product. Sorry man if you don't have Yamaha your missing out! I think $1000 is reasonable but your talking about Carter one of Yamaha's best players, so you know it will be expensive...:hump

Carter has been playing a Yamaha Prototype snare for a while now. likely to become his sig snare whenever it gets released.

Yammyha drums are good, but their hardware sucks bollocks. I can like attach elephants to my Pearl new hi-hat stand and bash them together they're so well built.

Yamaha are a bit slow off the mark really, they should have released Carter's sig snare ages ago, people will buy it even if it's a pile of shit

Yamaha hardware is the shit (other than the bass pedals, and hi-hat stands) the mounts on Yamaha drums are able to spin the toms 360 degrees and be set up in a matter of minutes. I must admit however that I did learn on a Pearl double pedal and it was damn quick so they Pearl has a little credit in my eyes.

nah man, those ball mounts are pish. Your drums waggle about in the breeze bashing off any hardware you happen to have too close and in the end the balls split and you can't tighten them up anymore. It' all about Pearl uni locks I'm afraid.

Never had a problem with my Yamaha mounts ever during my time with the kit and there was usually about half an inch between my BDs and Toms or Toms and hardware.

Exactly, I have ALWAYS had Yamaha and never had a ball split, you really dont ever need to tighten the drums down that much. Besides if the ball mounts were shit they wouldnt be able to take Carters tourture nightly... Nothing Pearl about Carters kit..

I bought a Pork Pie Percussion snare last year that sounds a lot like Carter's. It's 14 - 6.5, made out of a composite of Titanium and Steel. It has a real ballsy sound to it, with good tone...I was very impressed when I tested it out at Guitar Center and bought it for around $250 I think...not a bad deal. Look into that company, I believe it was made by a former guy from DW 10 or 15 years back? They make very nice drums for the little money you pay!
