Im a rookie at the guitar and was wandering if you could play an open D instead of the fith fret of A. Its sounds similar but i dont know if its the same. And its a whole lot easier.

same note, so yes ... i learned it that way first, but i say take the extra practice and leanr it the real way ... once you get it, it's easy and flows so naturally.

ya just stick with it ... it sucked having to learn the song twice b/c i leanred it the wrong way the first time. Just run through it slowly a few times making sure to hit all the notes. THat way you'll see how your fingers should be moving. THen speed it up, don't worry about hitting them all, just get those fingers moving fast. You'll eventually get the left hand and right hand hooked up so you can play it

I had such a bastard of a time getting that double-D. I'm still not perfect with it. I can play it fine w/ a single-D and a (relative) rest.

Well "wrong way" is relative of course, but the thing with hitting the open D is that it will ring for a while after you hit it, and on the Stone it sounds a little better if the notes are more clipped, so for "authenticity" I use the 5th fret A. Kind of deadans it a bit so you don't have a mess of sound from all the previous notes you hit that are still sounding.

Plus its probably good practice.

I just started playing that (I am a rookie as well) and I'll I've looked at so far is the intro

Its not too bad if you start slowly, I can do it at a regular pace, but not that fast at all

I just use the intro as part of my finger excersises, and i'll eventually learn the rest

Yep me too, Over and Over....one day It will be as fast as it is supposed to.

I use it as a finger excercise, everytime I pick up mu guitar.
