i've been playing for about 2 years. last year i bought a martin dcme, which i've been very happy with. now i'm looking to branch out. i like van halen, tool, incubus, b.b. king, clapton--pretty much everything. anyway my budget is about $800, which i think will fetch me a an american strat this month at guitar center (august is their anniversary sale). any advice, or suggestions on more versatile guitars for the $?
thanks,

If guitar center gets them in soon, look at the PRS Santana SE's. I have last years(the first year) and its awesome. Its a great balance of the fender sound and the les paul sound from the dual humbuckers on it. And they aren't 800 bucks :) I saw this years models have nicer colors and pick guards on them, which may or may not be appealing to you. Give em a try though.

im about to get a Fender 60's reissue strat.....i would suggest that, they are only about 530 bucks, but have an awesome sound. very much like the SRV strat in sound and the built of it.

I would definetly go with a Strat, play them to see which one you like, I built one early this year, I got a body from a 62 a neck from a 81, tuners and bridge from a 99, pickups from a 72, the rest of it was new equipment from fender. The logo on the headstock of the neck was all jacked up, but the neck was awesome it was straight and you can tell its had some playing to it, So I sanded the logo off and I might send it to fender so that they can redo the logo for me....But definetly go with a strat, les pauls are freakin heavy......But I also got to say, you should just go out and play a bunch of electrics and see which one you like, and then get that one.
