BTW, it's "bassist" and not "bass player"...get it right. ;) (j/k, I say that all the time...even worse when I'm called a "guitarist"...shudder)
Um, let's see here. I've been playing since Dec of 2000 with the Squier (read: cheap Fender) Bass Pack I bought online...currently saving up for a low/mid end (new or used...I don't care) Warwick Corvette :). I play all kinds of stuff (namely Metallica, Goo Goo Dolls, Alice In Chains, DMB, and anyone somewhat similar...so basically a bunch of hard rock mixed with metal and alternative...hehe).
I've got a ton of stuff written at the moment...nothing final, but the equivalent of 3 or 4 albums of stuff (1 concept, 1 trilogy ep, and 1 or 2 misc). I've been going through that a lot recently, changing things here and there, trying to get it to work either solo or w/ a band. Been working w/ some folks from another board I frequently visit...stuffs going pretty well, esp all the acoustic stuff we're working on...I'm loving it.
Anything else you wanted to know? I think I answered what ya asked... ;)

I wouldn't call myself a bassist, but I bought a bass about a year ago (a nice Fender Strat Bass) to use in song recording. I've just recently got the hang of it and I must say the bass is a wonderfully fun instrument to play. I play keyboards and guitars mostly, but I write and record music track by track on my computer using Sonar. Adding a bassline, even if it's simple, can totally change a song into something great.
Bassists rock!

I've been playing bass since last thanksgiving with the same Fender strat pack you other guys have.
I have fun with it, but playing alone just isn't the same as with drums and guitars. So I usually just learn some songs so I can play when I get the rare chance to get with some friends and jam.
otherwise I just play my acoustic guitar. I'm actually looking for a new one, but I'll never stop playin' bass. there aren't enough bassISTS out there. Always gotta have a bass when ya jam with your friends.
It makes it hard, though, when the bass player (me) can play 6-string guitar better then the guys who is playing guitar.

Yeah, I'll agree that the full blown bassist is pretty rare nowadays. It seems to me most play something along w/ bass. I've messed w/ guitar...it's just not my thing tho. Plus I tend to see a handful of want ads looking for a bassist, and very few for guitar, at least in my area.
Actually, did some reasearch at that other board I visit, interesting stat based on profiles:
Users: 182
Guitarists: 62
Bassists: 5
Sure it ain't scientific, but doesn't really surprise me either.
