Man, this came just in time because I'm listening to the rest of the tracks and my interest in Mercy needed to be revived (I only have the Fallon version on the ipod). It sounds awesome with a backbone, and theres enough musical interest there now to balance the "message" lyrics.

Between last night's show and the flood of new info, I'm on overload. Can't wait for more, but the anticipation is splendid.

Just keeps affirming that the music will be great, and the production will be stellar, regardless of a few weak/repetitive lyrics.

Mercy
Gaucho
Sweet
The Riff
Belly Full
If Only
Rooftop
Snow Outside
Drunken Soldier

Already got it loaded into iTunes in the album order with the rest of the songs that have been played. Studio versions of Mercy-> Gaucho sounds good...

I seem to recall that Lillywhite made some comment about that type of thing on Twitter a while back (after Gaucho came out). Basically, he felt that the "placement" of the instruments in that sense was very important in the mixing process.

Here it is (from May 22):

Jantz ‏@jspalding @Sillywhite I adore the end of Gaucho with Jeff in the right and Rashawn in the left. Spectacular. Hope you had a blast recording!

Steve Lillywhite CBE @Sillywhite @jspalding the stereo placing is extremely important to me.

It seems like these might be close if the Mercy outro doesn't actually fade on the album? Maybe someone can mash the two and correct the volume so it aligns with the start of Gaucho to see whether they work together. If this really is the end of Mercy on the album, it's going to be kind of a hard transition (not quite as forced as Hello Again --> LB, but not as long an outro as Mercy deserves, IMO).

Because yeah, that outro could go on FOREVER. Love it.

And the two we have heard studio and live I feel like the studio even trumps the live versions. Which at this point makes me so pumped for the album.

I remember back in 98 some of the BTCS songs didn't have the same kick to them that they had about a year or two later...they took time to develop.

I think these tunes are going to be live gems in a couple years.

Every song has a lot of room to improve live for me but Gaucho. Cause at some point in the song, no matter how it's structured, Dave's gonna have to repeat the chorus like thirty times in a row. That, or literally have the chorus of kids perform the song with them. Or bring back the Lovely Ladies.

Very few bands' albums are make or break based on who's Producing it. DMB is one of those bands. Being as dynamic as they are with so many talented musicians and instruments, not every Producer can utilize each member of the band to the fullest. Boyd, for example, hasn't been heard on a studio track since Steve left the Band. It's only two studio tracks so far (Gaucho and Mercy), but it's pretty safe to say that this is going to be a "Full-Band effort" album where every member is utilized and shines. When is the last DMB album where you could say that? The outro to 'Mercy' is just beautiful and classic Lillywhite and DMB. So many layers and effects! I know we all get carried away when a new song is released, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that this is the most polished and properly-produced studio track since 'You Never Know'. I can't wait two more months, but I can take comfort in knowing that this will be worth the wait. Our band is back!

If I'm going to pick a slow "inspire me with hope" song, I'm going Cry Freedom. This feels like a song completed based on a script. Like forcing it to be a certain sound. Flame me if you want, but I'm not saying its a bad song. Rather the opposite. It's a great song. Just not the kind of song I'm looking for from DMB. Not everything has to be a crazy jam. How is it sub par? In fact, I think this song highlights how good they are. Dave is playing a very very very simple groove on the guitar, and yet they are able to build a beautiful song around it with every member of the band adding something to it. The fact that they can take something so simple and build it up into a song like this is amazing to me!

I have to agree there seems to be a block of people who have crowned this album as the tits from the second Lillywhite was mentioned. Bottom line is he produces a beautiful song, but he doesn't write the songs and this song falls into the following category: Cool song with outstanding production. But you are right. This argument is silly. Of course not every song has to be a jam. Nothing about his post even remotely relates to that. How about this rebuttal? Let You Down is simple. Sooooo simple and unique and special. Mercy is simple. I think that argument would aptly support what he was saying and actually say within the context of his post with typical rhetoric.

I feel like people are on another planet. Am I one of the few that thinks the production quality of this is not very good??? I like the song a lot but am not digging these studio cuts. It doesn't sound like there's any reverb. I don't know how to explain the sound. Maybe play it back to back to a song like Pig and youll get it. The tunes on BTCS had such a beautiful airy sound. These (including Gaucho) sound as if they recorded in a tiny little room with no echo or anything. Just sounds so cluttered. I'm blown away by how many people think this production is good. Lillywhite Sessions sounded better than this and they were unfinished. I think people aren't getting past the LILLYWHITE and so everyone thinks everything sounds amazing. Sorry but so far the production sound quality on Stand Up is WAY better than what we've heard so far. These sound like unfinished demos. I tried not to get too psyched and sucked into the Lillywhite hype. But this is just utterly disappointing. I thought the sound was going to be amazing. So far the tunes are on par with pretty much anything on Big Whiskey and Everyday I think. Love those albums but nothing mind blowing. But the production quality on Everyday and Big Whiskey is WAY better than this.

Flame away. But it's true, and something inside you agrees.

I think it does Jeff a disservice to say he sounds like LeRoi. What we mean to say is that Jeff got the DMB sound right. There are a lot of ways to play the sax. I believe the way it's played here (and the way the flute is played in The Riff) fits the "DMB sound." Hopefully, Tim is back to that way too.

just wondering, what sounds empty to you. I think the vocals are 100% spot on. On Fallon, he was wavering and unsure of the rhythms (i thought) but on the studio version the vocals are just SO strong. Also, the song just fills out in such a huge way. It is, but at the same time, I don't miss it when I accidentally skip it after the "song" is over.

This is just funny... the way this song is put together, the flow, the accentuation of all the little things is exactly why Lillywhite is the best producer for this band. There hasn't been anything close to this on an album for 14 years. I would agree with you that the 'sound' of Stand Up is very good (even close to incredible) but this is far better. This song reminds me of Spoon in the way that it is a very simple song - but there are about a million little things going on that make it shine.

I'm talking about the production value, not the song itself. I love the song, I just think the recording sucks. Just because 8 people are playing an instrument at once doesn't make a song have more depth. There's just some sort of stale sounding quality to it and I think they could have put anything out with Lillywhites name on it and people would say its amazing. I'm happy for those who really enjoy it, I'm just disappointed. I expected more. I'm sure in time the quality of the recording may grow on me, but at this point I think it sounds like something that was recorded in a short time in someone's little home studio.

I'm betting it doesn't on the album. Lillywhite hates the fadeout.

Maybe segue into Gaucho

I don't know what it is, because it's not anything special, but the line "I wanna give you what you need," really gets to me. It's just a very honest line, and he sings it so truly. Love the song.

To each his own I guess... I really didn't think the song was anything special until I heard the studio version (especially with headphones). And I do agree with the premise bolded above... I just think in this case, the feeling that it's 'amazing' is valid. Gaucho, on the other hand, nothing real special.

Very well produced and well executed song. What I really love about this song is that it builds appropriately within its defined space. It's not a huge song...it's a small song, but feels big by the end. Very cool stuff.

Yea dude, think as you wish about the song itself, but if you can't tell a difference between the musicianship and detail put into the production, then I don't know what to tell you.

Just listened again on the way to work through some real speakers and wow. SL really captured the essence of what many of us loved about live DMB with Roi, and that's the ability to control their levels of playing to build emotion. Jeff even has a Roi-esque lick that made me smile wide. The music has the same vibe as the Heartbeat intro, something I didn't think the band in their new "rock" form would go back to. This album is going to have so much flow from 1-11, and I can't wait.

truth.

Part of the problem is the song is not good. Bad lyrics and it just leaves me wanting them to finish it. It's building in the beginning, yet never gets anywhere. There are no changes, no variation. It's a bland, boring song from start to finish.

People are talking about 3 and 4 second fills. What about the rest of it? I'll use the example again. People are saying it sounds like it could come off Crash. Play Cry Freedom, then play this. And when you stop laughing from how bad Mercy is, come back and talk to me.

I don't like Mercy, but it does sound quite bit better than I thought it would. It's laughable to think this would fit in on Crash though. This is nowhere even remotely close to the musicianship, lyrics, or production brilliance of Crash. Anybody that disagrees is simply in denial.

Nope. The crappy cell phone recordings I've heard of The Riff have me way more excited than this average song. It starts slow and is building to something, but it actually gets there!

Mercy is a Piss Break song. Bor-ing.

Well I am sorry you can't appreciate slow beautiful music. I'll admit, I've seen it live twice and the second time I heard it, it felt very empty. However, the studio version is amazing. I just find it amazing that some people can't appreciate it. It seems that if any new song is quite or slow, then it automatically sucks for some people.

I disagree with that yet I'm not in denial. Crash is a album that we have gotten to enjoy since 1996. We are used to listening to that album and have enjoyed the songs live for many years. If we have this discussion in 2028, maybe your opinion would be different. ;) I'm just kidding around, but I really do think that the vibe of this song is very uplifting and the most uplifting DMB album to date is Crash. And, I would actually argue that the musicianship, production, and intricacies of Mercy (and Gaucho) are just as good, if not better than Crash.

And for those of you that complain about Tim outshining Boyd on the newer songs, let's be honest with ourselves. Tim is a better player than Boyd hands down....And, remember, Tim, Jeff, and Rashawn are now equal parts of this band and all will have distinct parts on this album. This was a band album by the band that currently is constructed. Tim's primary influences are metal and rock, so hearing a song like The Riff and hearing his solos on Gaucho, Mercy, and even some of the Big Whiskey stuff are just Tim being Tim.

:thumbsup Yea, it reminds me of crash. I think the only reason for that though is because of the type of sax Jeff is playing.

Also, I don't even know where to begin with you if you actually think the brickwalled piece of shit Everyday can touch what we've heard so far sonically from Away from the World. The only thing I can think of is you having a problem with the mastering of this record, which I do, but that's an industry wide problem in pop music. As far as the mix and production goes, this is stellar. Lillywhite's stereo placement of the instruments, the focus on Dave's vocals in a melodically driven song, and of course his absolute mastery of how Carter's drum kit should sound. Carter's hi-hat is simply fantastic on Lillywhite dmb.

I really like blue crayons. Blue is an awesome color.

Blue sucks balls dude. Anyone who thinks blue is a good color is an idiot.

If I never see the color blue again i'm ok with that.

The only reason you don't like blue is because we have been bombarded with blue forever. blue is awesome and criticizing blue because its overexposed is invalid.

Orange is the best.

Fuck orange man and every other color in the new 8 pack. they all suck.

I'd take orange any day.

If i got a 24 pack and every single crayon was orange i wouldn't complain.... you douchebag haters don't like any of the new colors.

I like blue but only with the capo.

Colors are subjective man - to each his own. peace & love, peace & love.

Oh here we go with the all-colors-are-equal argument again. FALSE. if you don't see that old school blue is better than orange and burnt sienna and whateverthefuckelse they put out now then you're just in denial - and you know it.

If he knows it - he's not in denial...

shut up douche.

Not a big blue fan but i'm ok with it on a black background... occasionally.

Last time i saw blue live, the line at the pisser was a mile and a half long - for realz.

O hai guize - have you seen lemon yellow yet? it's amazing...

great, another fucking noob yellow lover.......
