1. Mercy - I was like: wow, that's a nice little tune. Then we got a full band version which is incredible.
2. Gaucho - I was like: meh, but now I see a potential there. Plus I think this song is going to fit in its place.
3. Sweet - full band. Awesome awesome song.
4. If Only - The best song of all of these before, and then....
5. The Riff - what.a.monster. Sooooo beautiful tune.
Plus the tease from the album video. But I already know it's going to be really GOOD. And I have a feeling that this album will be as good as The Big Three stuff.

I'm getting very excited as well. Once I heard that sample from the album video, which some said was "Drunken Solider" I went straight to the warehouse to order the super deluxe version. Does anyone here know how we know that 55 sec sample is "Drunken Soldier"?

Clearly the revealed songs show a style shift more in sync with earlier years than building on BW. Imo it is because Dave took a year off crafting the foundations of these songs from scratch instead of working on top of studio jams with the clock ticking. Bringing Lillywhite back indicates a willingness to do everything possible to make another great album. Hopefully this recipe repeats in the next 3 to 5 years. No reason to think they saved the worst songs for last so I'm counting down the days till 9/11.

For me at least I wasn't really exited until I heard "The Riff" and the 55 sec sample of "Drunken Soldier." I would say the other songs are ok to good. But I haven't really listened to them much. They didn't suck me in like The Riff and the sample of Drunken Soldier.

I certainly think what we've heard so far is pretty weak. I like the riff and the horns in Gaucho. I like the groove of If Only. And that's about it.
They should play Mercy for insomniacs who don't respond to strong drugs. What a waste of a setlist slot it will be for the next few years.
Edit: I think I'm the only person whose favorite so far is If Only.

Just the general feel of it. It's all moody in the verses, and then snaps into something resembling a 60s motown song for the chorus. I love the contrast between those two parts, and Dave's melody line is fantastic from start to finish. Just a really well constructed song.

If Gaucho is one of the worst songs on the album I think I'll like the album as a whole. Cause as much as I dislike Gaucho, it's way better than a song like Dive In or Spaceman.

The best songs off BWGGK are better then the best of what we've seen of these so far but the worst of the new songs are still much better than the worst of BWGGK. So basically, I have no expectations whatsoever.

I don't think I've been blown away by a song yet, but what I've heard is six pretty solid tunes that are starting to come together. I think Gaucho is my least favorite because it sounds "pieced" together, but I mean at least there are redeeming qualities (the riff, the verse melody, the horns in the outro).

cliffnotes of Jake (has heard album) on AFTW:
-We now have a Big 4, not a Big 3
-Drunken Soldier is a 'monster', like four songs in one, over 9 minutes long, probably wont be played live
-Belly Full is Dave acoustic
-Broken Things and Belly Belly are his favorites
-Rooftop and Snow Outside were his least favorites
-Blows BW out of the water

Really confused on the hate on the words of Mercy. Maybe because it's not poetic or too straight forward for some I think. I totally agree Dave's lyrics have gotten less poetic over the years, but these lyrics are incredibly strong imo.. He systematically and simply says what we need to do as a society to survive, and that could be the most important message in our generation.
He doesn't say stand up for what you believe; everybody a child of generation X grew up hearing that & it's gotten us nowhere. Stand up for what we need to be (to survive). Why couldn't we lock ourselves in a room until our problems were resolved? Because of our hardheadedness.. But love is not a whisper or a weakness, and will overcome. The title itself, Mercy, is a plea to lift up your hearts, open up your eyes, & pay attention. I think it is absolutely gorgeous.

sweet - was meh on it dave solo, then I listened to it more and really liked the uke, the full band version is awesome
mercy - same as sweet, was meh hearing it solo, didn't listen to it live full band but caved in and listened to the album version and holy shit is that some amazing studio work, the ending is just awesome
gaucho - I like it, from first listen when dave's guitar started I knew this would be a good album, the production on the studio track is great, singing kids, chorus and all I love it
if only - love it too, another infectious chorus, thought mr cool line was cheesy at first but then I couldn't get it out of my head, lamenting a lost love as only dave can
the riff - tried not to listen to it since that would be about half the album, then listened to a hd youtube video, love playing it on guitar and it's got some great lyrics in it
belly belly nice - fuckin awesome, so catchy, great energy, all the band members contributing, solos, cannot wait to hear the studio version of this

Sweet- When the band comes in I cry its so amazing
Mercy- Every time I hear it gets better. Amazing song. Love Dave expirimenting on piano
Gaucho- awesome studio. I caught it twice as DC and Alpine. Amazing live. amazing
If Only- Love this song. Didnt like the drums at first now love their initial simplicity
The Riff- Amazing song
Belly Belly Nice- pumps me up like crazy

Sweet- Wasnt so hot on it at first, but it grew on me. I like the full band when they come in. I think the studio version will be killer
Mercy- Liked it at first, but now im loving it. The studio version is pure lillywhite magic
Gaucho- Almost fell in love right away. Lyrics still bother me, but the music is great great stuff. Studio is great. Finally caught it live this past Saturday, was real solid.
If Only- Saw the debut @ blossom and liked it a good bit. I still like it but have found myself not listening to it nearly as much as the others (minus sweet)
The Riff- Incredible. Reminded me of a Pearl Jam song when I first heard it. I love the scales and its just a rocking song. Studio is gonna be great
Belly Belly Nice- Jaw dropped hearing this live Saturday. Sounded like a song that belonged on Crash. a Freaking Boyd solo in it!! This is gonna be a monster live.
With every song that has come out, just like the title says, I have liked album progressively more and more. If I had to rank them so far
The Riff/Belly Belly Nice - cant pick one as of now. loving them both.
Mercy
Gaucho
If Only
Sweet

I must have really grown away from DMB in the past year or so, because I don't hold this same optimistic view all of you hold on these songs.
Edit: Despite its weak lyrics, Belly Belly Nice is probably my favorite musically.

The Riff (big 3 material easily)
Belly Belly Nice (big 3 material musically)
Gaucho/ If Only (if only is better lyrically and groovier, but gaucho is awesome musically also. Love the heartbeat style drum beat before the outro)
Sweet (love it full band, boring solo)
Mercy (i like the outro better than the actual song to be honest)
All in all, I enjoy every song so far and find this album to be one of their best... So far (i know it's early), I'd probably go like this.
BTCS
tLWS/BS (not too far below BTCS)
AFTW (quite below BS, barely above Crash atm, but again, this album is too early to "for sure" place here...)
Crash
Big Whiskey
UTTAD
R2T (way above btm 2)
Everyday
Stand Up (way below Everyday)
I did become a fan in 2005, so that's maybe why I rate some of the older stuff below many other hardcores and some newer stuff higher than many hardcores would ever dream of.

With every revealed song, I'm starting to think that this record will have a number of average (for DMB) songs, maybe a clunker or two, and a 2 or 3 gems. Drunken Soldier has the potential to be stunningly good, from everything we've heard.

But, I am here to say I am in full support of the idea in the title. Every time I hear a new one I am just more entranced by this album. My least favorite thing that I've heard so far is that studio version of Mercy. Everything else, from the Why I Am intro improv jam to the song in the Away From the World announcement video tickles my fancy. I love when people brush this album off already though, that's always funny.

Sweet-Beautiful song. I have loved it since it debuted at Chi Caravan and it has changed so beautifully. It was wonderful live too. When the full band kicks in, I just have to smile.
If Only-As a musician, this one is fantastic. So simple, and awesome. The chords in the chorus are so interesting with that melody. Great horns section. A real groover. Kind of lame live though, but listening to the tapes made me realize that Alpine was just a bad version.
Mercy-Meh. Love the vocals, hate the vocals and bare-boned nature of it. Just nothing really special.
Gaucho-Great. Best part is the bridge. Lyrics are aggravating just because my republican friends always take insult for some reason. Great live, great studio. Great song
The Riff-Incredible. Interesting guitar work. Great melody. Beyond catchy jammer.
Belly Belly Nice-So catchy it's not even funny. I was trying to stay away from listening to the new songs anymore, but this is too damn good. The Boyd solo and Jeff parts, and I personally love the lyrics. The name disgusts me though.
The best part of any piece of music they have so far though, and I don't know why no one talks about this, is Rashawn's shouting "love" in the breakdown and chorus of Belly Belly Nice. It's a nod to Pig. It's a nod to Granny. It's awesome and sounds great in the song.

This is turning out to be an above average album but nothing more. Better than Big Whiskey? I'd say it's a litttle better but not by much. It's what I expected from them. I honestly think if Batson had produced this record people would hate it. Where is a song that completly blows you away when you hear it? I don't hear a Seek Up, Bartender, Cry Freedom, Last Stop, Spoon, Billies or even a Shotgun on this album.

Sweet-Watched it solo didn't pay much attention. Watched it full band didn't pay much attention till the band came in. Not listening to it anymore until the album comes out.
Mercy- Love Mercy, only new song I got at STL this year. Listen to it on mp3 helps me relax.
If only - Love this song, like the bluesy feel to it, listen to the debut exclusively, it's a very chill so and i like it that way.
The Riff- Only listened to it about 2 times, quality of the video isn't great and I'm going to hold off on it until the album. Seems the type of song that will build well on the album but at this point I'm not paying attention.
Gaucho- I like it but I'm listening to it less now. Lyrics don't bother me, they may seem simplistic but I do believe Dave is writing them from the heart. alot of his thoughts now probably are centered on the type of world his kids will be living in. Hence these lyrics.
Belly Belly Nice- AWESOME song. Got to listen to it about 15 minutes after it debuted and then Copperpot posted the next day a much better video. Outstanding and very fun. It's WWYS but more fun.

Big 3 until proven BS
The Big 3 is a little bit of a myth now I think. I've read that there was a lot of criticism when those older albums came out, it was before my time. A lot of the songs from those albums are classics, but the studio versions don't have the same energy.
This album already has made the Big 4, because the Big 3 doesn't exist. It's a fantasy.
toomuch32
07-20-2012, 01:37 AM
It's called the Big 3 but for me it's BTCS and everything else. It was truly a perfect album. I like Crash but that came after I already had tons of shows of live better versions. Same with UTTAD, love the live version and some UTTAD have good studio tracks but I got hooked on the darkness and power of BTCS songs so UTTAD didn't do it for me.
