View Full Version : How do you build skill?????

hmm right now my guitar playing skill is to where I can play most normal things prety much all DMB, but how does someone learn to be able to play crazy stuff like timmy?
I mean Im sure it takes many years but any one have an idea what path to take to try and get even somewhere near that level; like what things do you need to focus on and learn?

practice and study, learn theory, that will help youre skill increase by leaps and bounds.

very true words^ knowing a lot of thoery helped me progress rather quickly with the guitar after i'd already taken several years of piano

you have to figure out some way to practice so that you enjoy it. If you have to make yourself do it, it won't be as effective.

OK....I learned how to play some pretty amazing stuff in about a year. Go to websites..like guitartricks.com.... riffinteractive.com....etc. Just search for those kind of sites. Hmmm...I'd also strongly recommend private lessons. I started with a blues/rock teacher...then to a shred teacher...and this summer I took lessons from a student at berklee college of music who was good at fingerpicking. Oh...and I played for 2-5 hours a day. So if u wanna get as good as tim, do what i told u. i wouldn't call myself equal to tim...maybe a little below

Study theory...lots of it....then practice for hours on end...even if you fingers hurt or your hand...keep doing it....take lessons definitely...Blue, Classical, that kind of shit....I fully intend on taking Blues guitar lessons once summer rolls around...because I can only learn so much by trying to teach myself...
