Making a vocal melody to a song

Well I have been writing some songs and creating a melody for vocals is pretty tough. I dont want it to sound too boring with the vocals just stayin in one area or key or repeating the same notes so many times....any suggestions for this

Make up words while playing the music. Or just sing out la la la...

Just sing around and try different things vocally. You can usually feel if something is going to work, and you can certainly hear when it doesn't. Don't be afraid to jump octaves or stray from what your playing.
