What are the easiest DMB songs to play on the guitar for beginners. I mean no finger strechers.

typical situation, grey street
you should work on finger stretches, when your challenged at the guitar you tend to enjoy it more. atleast i do, i play grey street and i get bored real fast and then i play #41 and i have more fun because i gotta work on the stretches and hitting the chords right.
just practice

I know but I have not played one full DMB song and I want to get one on a six string acoustic so I can have my friends sing to it.

Some that I think are easier...
Ants
Blue Water
Tangerine (a cover)
Satellite (I've heard it's a good one to learn, but I'll admit I don't know how to play it)
Crash
Spoon
Gandalf

Typical Situation
Seek Up - cake
Where Are You Going
Dancing Nancies - this one can introduce you to some of Dave's favorite chord structures, in my opinion. Plus it'll help you nail Dave's strumming patterns.

the songs mentioned are easy once you know how to play the guitar
but for actual easiet dave song Proudest Monkey has to be it

I am having a real tough time with Grey Street. I just started playing, but I love this song. I have trouble with the fingering...I don't use the same fingering as Dave because it is too difficult. I also have trouble muting the 1st two strings. Any tips?

um...going from typical situation and grey street is a HUGE JUMP...HUGE...somethign a little more subtle and helps you practice your stretches later are the #34 and satellite...do those before going to #41 its very hard for beginners

when you first learn use yoru index and middle finger to play the chords and keep yoru index lower on the top string toward the second string so it will almost mute itself and the middle finger movie it toward the third string and it will take care of it self...but i always leave the third string open...i just mute the second string

Ha, you have trouble muting the strings because you don't use Dave's fingering. Believe me, practicing this weird fingering is well worth the time...

I'm having so much fun just playing the few chords of Watchtower over and over. Getting the perfect strum and mute like Dave does is so fun if you can execute it.

I'm really bad with visualizing and mimicing music...so can someone help me out and tell me what chords Dave is playing in the intro/verse in this video?

Dreamgirl was the first Dave song I learned to play. It isn't too hard and trust me on this....I'm a very inexperienced guitar player. Been playing for only 4-6 months now. To master Dreamgirl however, you have to make sure you get the timing right cause Dave's just crazy and he hits it on the offbeat.
Other than that, cornbread is fun to play and is about the same difficulty.

:ugh No way these are the easiest ones to play! The fact that the chords in there aren't fingerbreakers doesn't mean these songs are easy. It's all about strumming and rhythm. I've seen a lot of guitarists that are probably even better me fucking up the rhythm of Dave's riffs.
Start off with Gravedigger (just open chords in there, a rarity in the DM catalogue), Loving Wings (it's hard to sing along to though), Proudest Moneky. If you want to learn how to mute strings, Big Eyed Fish is a good choice. It's a pretty easy song but it is has two "Dave chords" in there that require some muting.

I learned Lie in Our Graves first, without any guitar practice before. Since then (a couple months) I've learned crash (was hard to get the timing at first for some reason) and What would you say riff, where are you going. There not perfect but I'm getting better.

There are some songs that people think are "easy" for a beginner which blow my mind...IF you are talking about playing the FULL song correctly, or at least according to dmbtabs.com...
OSW
LIOG
Satellite (seriously?)
Jimi Thing
Minarets
Dreamgirl
#34
I would consider all of these songs semi-intermediate DMB songs.
I suppose everyone is different and to each their own...you can certainly learn a couple of the riffs to these songs but to ask a newbie to play along with a 17 minute LIOG or Jimi is asking a lot IMO.
Easiest song is no doubt Proudest Monkey...I think I also found True Reflections, AATW, Gravediiger, and Big Eyed Fish and Song that Jane Likes easy and they also use "normal" chords which other artists use...also if you can tune down your low E to a D...DDTW and Bartender are pretty easy too.

IMO, Gravedigger's hammer-ons along with its strumming pattern isn't exactly "beginner-friendly".

Probably true...I wonder if the timing/strumming pattern of that song has changed a bit...I was playing along to the LT 10 version the other day and I was WAYYY off. I learned it off of the early '02 versions. Anyway...you are right in terms of the hammers and what not...I was just thinking of songs that didn't have any goofy Dave chords...but I suppose even if you have the timing off you could probably still BS your way through the song at a bonfire and the average listener wouldn't know any better.

05-23-2008, 02:31 PM
To be straight up honest, I think there was no easier song to learn how to play then AATW, after that man its whether the guitarist is comfterable with strumming or with picking. Some songs though, LIOG, Recently, Ants, Two Step, and Crash are IMO the easiest way to get into the style that Dave plays, and from there you progress into songs like Satellite, Stone, Billies, and YNK which, again IMO, are the some of the hardest songs, yet the pinnacle of Dave's guitar ability. Satellite isn't that hard though heh.

satellite is tough for a beginner, come on you just didn't touch the guitar and play it exactly right with the strumming patterns and everything and sound right...its a slow process

I am 20 years old, but have been considering taking up the guitar for a while now. I was extremely gifted on both the piano and the drums as a youngster, but gave up music for sports and never looked back. I think it'd kick ass to be able to play some dmb songs on a guitar! I might be checking out this thread again pretty soon if i decide to learn

I agree with you, but I think Watchtower is pretty difficult when it comes to playing the right rhythm, especially if you sing along.
I think Grey Street was the first one I could do succesfully, even though it took me forever to bar the strings right, but that song helped me master the technique. I find Bartender extremely easy if you wanna give that a try. Christmas Song's pretty simple too.
For you experts out there, what are the hardest DMB songs to play (and sing at the same time)? I'd guess BOWA, WWYS, SMTS, and YNK, but I don't know.

I agree with all except BOWA. It really isn't that hard to play and sing at the same time; its literally just a chord progression (a very creative one, but one nonetheless).
Others I would say would be The Stone, Rhyme and Reason, LIOG could be tough at first, but the melody follows the riff in a way, uhh Jimi Thing is incredibly difficult to sing and play at the same time, Drive in Drive Out is moderately difficult...the list goes on, but those are the main ones :thumbsup

I hear BOWA isn't that bad. SMTS and WWYS hard but not the hardest. I've heard a general mixedness between YNK, Billies with the perfect Nature intro, and Stone being some of the bad asses.

my list a few posts up should do you right. If any of the barr chords are giving you trouble, then just do a partial barr instead (you should only have to barr 2 or 3 strings at a time in a partial barr, as opposed to having to fret all 6 strings).
