View Full Version : Satellite Kills Wrists

I just played Satellite through, as well as I currently can, about 3 times straight, and now my wrist is killing me. That damn 4-8 fret stretch for so long just kills. I used to play the verse with 1-2-3 fingers, but now I play it correctly with 1-2-4 and it's kinda easier because I do'nt have to move my hand nearly at all, but, if i haven't mentioned yet, IT KILLS MY WRIST!!!
It hurts Dave, too. He usually follows it up with something simple, and you often catch him shaking his hand out afterwards.

what helps me is whenever there are those little pauses in the intro and stuff do a little vibrato or just something to losen up the wrist

i've been thinking of taking up guitar and wanna know what would be the easiest dave song for me to learn first. i'm a very small person so i have small hands. i'm open to any suggestions!! my favorite song is #41 but from what u guys are saying i'm a little scared that i won't be able to do this.

Nothing bothers me except Satellite. I played it at a gig by request and I almost fucking quit...it was awful. I think it's god's way of telling me not to play it :p

Satellite, Crash, and sometimes Christmas Song kills me. But Satellite is the worst.

Then I'll play it, and you can sing. Cuz I can play it just fine, but can't sing worth shit. And we all know you can sing like a mofo.

I tried playing Crash at a gig once, and I had to quit halfway through, I just couldn't do it. Funny thing is, a few years later, I played it again for a group of 20 people or so, and it was fine (I was drunk off my ass at the time, so I guess I wasn't feeling pain.... :lol)

I have a show (D&T) in which Dave introduces Crash as "the song that caused my carpel tunel syndrom."
I got a laugh out of that one.

there is a way to play #41 as a beginner if you can't handle the stretches... using basic chords rather than Dave's stretches, but I advise if you do learn in teh easy way to keep practicing and getting it dave's way

The chords:
x02210
024030
075780
054030
(i don't have a guitar around at the moment, so if these sound bad, correct me)
work pretty good for #41... I acutally switch between the them and the way dave plays it for some varation sometimes.

I'm surprised so many people have trouble with crash, playing it never bothered me. Satellite has always bothered me but lately i've gotten it better, and it's not as big a deal. 41 still gets me :)
41 Doesn't even make me flinch. Satellite is even okay. Crash, however, is going to require painkillers for me to play all the way through.
I hate it when I bring it into rotation. The first night or two is fine- after that I start feeling it before I hit the first "Craaaaaash..." and I know I'm in deep shit. Segue, anybody?

Rob, do you play gigs anywhere? I live in between Nashua and Worcester. Are there any cool places to get gigs in the area, I can never really find much.

If you've done anatomy, and learnt about the carpal tunnel, you will know that it's the bending of your wrist over long periods of time that causes the pain. So straighten it out as often as you can during the songs, which is easy in songs like #41, and not in some others.

easy chords to #41 are as follows:
Am7 002010
Bm7 224232
Em? 07578x
D x5403x
The D chord actually sounds really good if you leave the g string open.
Chorus
G 320033
D/F# 200232
C 032010
These chords work just as well as any others, but they're not what Dave plays so if that's what you want to learn, learn those later.

I think most people have a lot of problems with Crash. Even Dave himself. Go to my tab site(http://wam.umd.edu/~jkanter/) and check out the last section. Dave switches to this version for the verse when his hand gets tired. He has done that a lot more lately because it hurts him. When he first wrote the song, he didn't do that(too often I believe), but now he does it at almost every show(I believe). Check it out, makes the song a lot easier to play through. Enjoy...Keep on Playing...Peace

I've never really had a problem with #41 for some reason...Crash is alright but Satellite always kills me...the 4 fret stretch hurts after you play it for a while and since the frets are bigger there than the 7-9-11 like in Warehouse it hurts more...Billies was also a BITCH to learn but that's not too bad now
