so i called my regular guitar store here, only to find out that they don't carry elixir strings anymore. Now they tried to sell me Martin SP+ strings instead but they did that last time, and i hated the Martin SP+ strings. By the way don't buy them, they say that they will last as long as elixer but they go dead in about 2 weeks. Sure they don't break for 3 months, but they make your guitar sound like a shoebox with strings. All the other guitar stores are out of elixers. I have tried many types of other strings and they just don't compare when strung on my guitar. I play a Larrivee dednaught (sp.?). My question is this, what other types of strings can i use that will last almost as long while still keeping the bright sound of the elixers? Cause SP+ suck. and oh yea when did it become so hard to find elixer? thanks in advance.

D'ADDARIOS!!! theyre the best by far, also DR strings arent too bad, but you can never go wrong with D'Addarios.

i think elixrs are overrated... i play with d'addarios now and probobly wont switch.. my beef with them is that they break easier than others.. especially when tuning... but that may just have to do with the gague of the strings.. i love the sound of d'addarios new... some people say that the new sound dulls fast though, but thats true with most strings

The coating on the D'Addarios, when I tried them, tended to gunk up quickly. I will live and die by my Elixirs.

If you haven't found the site. Check out www.juststrings.com

They have all strings for really cheap, and I think they send them through USPS so shipping is only the cost of a regular stamp, or maybe two.

i only use d'addarios. they may not last quite as long, but you can buy four sets for the price of elixers. worth every penny.

Oh, see, I was talking about the coated d'addarios. Not their uncoated strings.

ive used both, the coating is sticky and just downright awful. but the noncoated are the best strings ive ever played.but elixers to shame.

D'Adarrio's sound good for about an hour and then they sound horrible. I liked Elixers before, I think they sound great, but I would break them if I looked at em funny.

I use Martin Marquis and I like them. They last much longer than D'Addarios and don't break often.

I'm trying to figure how you guys play in order to break the strings like you do. I NEVER break strings playing. Sometimes while tuning old strings, but that's the only time.

Maybe you guys are using picks that are too stiff. I just today learned to play The Stone, and I realized the reason I wasn't able to play it up to tempo was because I was picking it too stiffly. It has to be played softly.

And remember, Dave uses .60mm picks. Those are almost the thinnest picks made.

i don't usually break strings to often playing but it is not an uncommon thing. I as well use Fender thin picks. Merely because i like the sound they make. I find problems playing correctly with them though because they have no backbone.

I use Fender medium picks.

I break strings because I strum hard on the middle strings mostly. I always end up breaking the A and D strings after a few weeks. It's just that the songs I write use those strings more I guess.

I know what you're saying about thin picks being flimsy. I find that when I use thin picks I have to hit harder to get the same intensity and it really negates the point of using lighter strings.

On the same token I don't care for the riggedness of hard picks, I feel like I should be playing a bass with them. I never understand how people use heavy picks to play punk music and where them down without destroying their guitar. I've seen people play with coins, which have just as much flexibility.
