Hey all you guitar players, I bought an acoustic, and i'm trying to teach myself how to play. I've got the general idea of how to play the beginning of Crash into me, but, I can't get the strum pattern down yet, for some reason. It seems that the tabs are more of a general idea than the actual way it should be played, any suggestions that might help me would be great, I practice all the time, so, I know i'll get it, but i'm in a bit of a rut, thanks.

if you are just starting I say go with something other than dave songs.

I've been playing since April and still cant play crash right, but I can play some others(#40, Lie in our graves, Cry Freedom and others)

I suggest you start with simplier songs that just use open chords to begin

Crash was one of my first tunes, and I somewhat regret it... If you learn your "basics" with songs like that, you'll stunt yourself later on.

Ok Rob, do you agree with Mathers420, then, that I should start with songs like Lie in our graves and Cry Freedom, or, what songs would you suggest for me to learn on. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

A solid understanding of basic chord progressions is a great place to start. STJL isn't bad for that, if you wanna stick with Dave. You could also try some Howie Day, like "More You Understand" for good chord practice, or something simpler like "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty, "Lola" by the Kinks, etc.

I didnt learn these songs till recently see robs lists of songs to start with also

Boss DJ by Sublime
April 29 th by Sublime
Angel From Montgomery

basically anything that just uses basic chords.

you could even just learn the chords and start with your own progressions, I did that before I learned any songs

To be 100% honest, I haven't been playing for very long, i've had some luck playing and getting a rhythm on the guitar, and playing things that sound really well (to my ears) together, But, I really no nothing of how to actually play a guitar. I pretty much just sit and strum for about an hour or 2 every day, and have fun with it. i'm just trying to learn to play songs now, because i'd like to be able to play them, so, as far as my experience, I guess you could say i'm a novice, but, i'm pretty comfortable on the frets.

On your question of Crash, its a good song to play, but if you are beginnning it may be safe to start with easier Dave, or just your chords to start out. IU started off with chords and learned Dave after a while. Crash is an easy song, but the finger stretching can hurt like a mother. It will take time. I started to learn it and I'm still taking time to get the correct fingering.
